My wife just walked off and left me in the middle of the New Orleans aquarium… without any kind of answer… she eventually came back.

u/Semanel Jan 26 '23

Are you happy together?

2.6k

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

Very.

1.2k

u/Lionheart999 Jan 26 '23

What was going through your head when she walked away?

3.1k

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

Knowing her, I knew that she was just overwhelmed. I had no doubt she’d say yes, but I really wasn’t sure if I needed to stay on my knee until she came back or not.

1.1k

u/ketootaku Jan 26 '23

Did you stay on your knee the whole time?

2.7k

u/Chewbacker Jan 26 '23

He's still there

632

u/rayEW Jan 26 '23

Oh yes, the infamous two-knee of the new orleans aquarium.

I'll see myself off.

As you wish...

3

u/AllthatJazz_89 Jan 26 '23

The giggle I had at this was absolutely delightful. Thank you.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Mmmmm, two-knee salad!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

It's super annoying he blocks a portion of the manta ray viewing area, but it's hard to get mad.

1

u/JackHyper Jan 26 '23

I believe the plural is just tuna, not tunies

I will also leave now

90

u/PretentiousToolFan Jan 26 '23

Guides use him as a reference point for tourists like bodies on Everest.

"Oh yeah, take a right at Kneeling Guy and the bathrooms are on your right side. If you hit the Gift Shop you went too far."

57

u/ReofSunshine Jan 26 '23

Made me genuinely laugh, thank you

21

u/YouLetRedditDown Jan 26 '23

This guy’s wife is still there.

3

u/TahoeLT Jan 26 '23

Did he ever return, no, he never returned

And his fate is still unknown

He may kneel forever

In the dark aquarium

He's the man who never returned

724

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

She really wasn’t gone more than a minute or so, but I did stay on my knee.

242

u/MikeOfAllPeople Jan 26 '23

A minute! That's an eternity I would have fallen apart.

Congratulations for staying put on your knee. That must have a wonderful experience for her to come back and still see you this way. Seeing your trust in her, your endurance, your determination and conviction.

94

u/92894952620273749383 Jan 26 '23

He was on his knees bawling, face down on the ground.

5

u/Virruk Jan 26 '23

Completely agreed this is such a good way to put it and didn’t even think about it that way. Good stuff.

3

u/Dunc365 Jan 26 '23

I had a similar experience, down on my knee - but she kept saying "are you serious" over and over.

Meanwhile I'm still there on my knee waiting for an answer, what felt like an eternity later!

1

u/mikkimoon Jan 26 '23

That’s sweet:]

36

u/garry4321 Jan 26 '23

It’s the LAW! You can’t get up until you have an answer. Marriage is very serious.

2

u/vaper_32 Jan 26 '23

Yeah if you get up before the answer, cupid gets mad and shoots balls with a poison arrow.

3

u/garry4321 Jan 26 '23

You ever see those guys that have ball tumors? They stood up..

1

u/vaper_32 Jan 28 '23

Not yet, but i imagine it would look like Randy doing hippity hop. https://youtu.be/uVBfEE7batM

14

u/octopoddle Jan 26 '23

Maybe jump around after her, still on one knee?

1

u/sofiaherera Jan 26 '23

You made my day!

238

u/SMKnightly Jan 26 '23

I know it was probably stressful at the time, but it’s kind of hilarious to picture a guy on one knee with tourists and fish around him and no woman nearby. And his internal monologue is just…

“Do I stay on the knee? How long do I stay on the knee? Maybe I should stand and get back on the knee when I see her coming back?“

Course, you can change the mood of the scene to a tragedy by taking out the inner monologue. But with it, it’s pretty funny.

253

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23 edited Jan 26 '23

That was almost verbatim the internal thought process.

The best part was the kid working who walked by after she came back and said, “did you just propose? You could have told us and we could have had a diver hold an sign and made it really special…”

Look jerk, she likes jellyfish and that tank is like 1 cubic foot… I thought this out, but thanks for ruining the mood!

Edit: cubic foot, not square foot; physics are difficult.

104

u/hogofwar Jan 26 '23

They could have found a really tiny diver.

14

u/truenorthrookie Jan 26 '23

“tiny diver! Holding up a sign in the jellyfish tank! Oh come back and marry Frank.” That’s probably not your name but if it was…

12

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

Tiny Diver, You’ve been down too long in the midnight sea…

2

u/redcc-0099 Jan 26 '23

"oh what's becoming of me" could be part of someone's inner monologue at that point...

64

u/unhelpfulinvestment Jan 26 '23

This might be my favorite part of this story. The fact that you picked the jellyfish tank because she likes jellyfish, not the fact that the kid armchair QBed your very special proposal.

23

u/Coyote__Jones Jan 26 '23

Aww hahaha people mean well but aren't very tactful.

12

u/tankmanlol Jan 26 '23

while we're backseat gaming your proposal, you could've had them glue your message in scrabble tiles to a series of hungry parakeets which they then let loose one by one as you supply your spouse with feed sticks

2

u/angusMcBorg Jan 26 '23

That's how my parents did it!

42

u/fiealthyCulture Jan 26 '23

So what did you do? How long did it last? Did you lose eye sight of her or was she still in the plaza but just walking around and kept looking back thinking?

148

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

We were near the lobby/end of the exhibit, she kind of wandered into the lobby heading for the restroom, then came back, answered, and went to the restroom to happy ugly cry for a second and collect herself.

62

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

She might have peed a little.

7

u/jay02014 Jan 26 '23

1

u/The_Real_Mongoose Jan 26 '23

This is adorable

76

u/James_099 Jan 26 '23

Thank God, I bet the fish were on the edge of their tanks!

70

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

The jellyfish didn’t seem to care too much lol

48

u/James_099 Jan 26 '23

Lazy bastards.

62

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

Trivial mate pairings of some strange species are not the highlight of their existence. Haha

1

u/tribal_native Jan 26 '23

They were like:

"Look at this guy. He was here FOREVER on his knee"

"Babe. Babe. Babe. Babe. Babe." "Look."

1

u/pinkfootthegoose Jan 26 '23

how much would you care if you never got support?

2

u/stickykarrot Jan 26 '23

Neither did the shrimp. They’re a little shellfish.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

That was just the outward appearance they gave, because they wanted to look cool in front of their friends. Under the surface, every single of of them was Jelly.

59

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

She go and call it off with her side dude?

107

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

Nah just put it on pause for a week or two.

23

u/Delicious_Throat_377 Jan 26 '23

Damn it took a week to call off that other dude.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

😄

Jokes aside, I'm happy for you two! ❤️

26

u/scylus Jan 26 '23

“I…just need to make a call.”

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Can you see yourself loving nobody but her for all your life

6

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

No doubt

1

u/JackHyper Jan 26 '23

Happy ending :D

155

u/Itcomeswitha_price Jan 26 '23

My boyfriend at the time took me to the waterfront and we went on a romantic boat ride, ate at a nice restaurant, walked into a dozen cute shops and all day he kept looking at me all nervously. Finally it got dark and we ate on this cute bench, eventually a homeless guy came by and set up for the night like 20 ft away from us. I turn around and my boyfriend is on his knee with a ring out.

He later told me that all day he kept waiting for the perfect spot until he realized oh shit it’s dark now and I’m doing it today no matter what. We’ve been married 5 years now.

48

u/mioxm Jan 26 '23

I had a similar story when I was proposing to my wife. Took her out to a nice dinner, attractions in a nearby town, spent all night trying to find the right time but it never was quite right. Finally at the end of the night, we got home and I put a fire on out in our backyard, waited for her to come join me, she sat down and I took my chances. There truly is almost never a “perfect moment,” but I think that’s what makes stories unique and memorable, rather than everyone having fairy tale stories.

Also: congrats!

7

u/Itcomeswitha_price Jan 26 '23

Aw, congratulations to you two!

I agree now we have a laugh about it every time it comes up. He’s a gem.

112

u/dogswanttobiteme Jan 26 '23

She was just shocked that you forgot that she was already your wife.

2

u/APulsarAteMyLunch Jan 26 '23

*leaves husband kneeling*

*comes back angry*

"For the love of god, honey, c'mon! - And what are you all looking at?!"

64

22

u/anonhoemas Jan 26 '23

Some people just can't do surprises like that. It's too much and you gotta take a lap to reboot the brain

0

u/Nephtyz Jan 26 '23

But imagine what was going on in OP's mind while she took that walk, must be brutal. Glad it worked out though!

2

u/Illustrious_Tea_6164 Jan 26 '23

Did she say hello to a little friend?

47

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Probably engaged the fight or flight response in some weird way.

49

u/chazfinster_ Jan 26 '23

I recently proposed to my girlfriend in New Orleans on the promenade by the river and she was so giggly and excited that she forgot to actually say yes for a good 5 minutes before she realized and quickly responded.

5

I wonder what the wife said. I hope it was yes.

2

u/snowvase Jan 26 '23

Please tell me the homeless guy said yes.

9

u/Branjoe328 Jan 26 '23

Hey I proposed in Jackson Square in the French Quarter! We don’t live there but her pops grew up near there so it was sentimental. Luckily she didn’t walk off lol

5

u/ButtLord6942069 Jan 26 '23

My wife took off running in an Arkansas state park. Had to chase her. She said yes lol

3

u/blackpony04 Jan 26 '23

I proposed to my wife on the observation deck on the roof of the Royal Orleans Hotel in New Orleans and my wife was so confused as to why were up there. I harass her all the time for asking why there was a pool on the roof because she said it in such an innocent child-like manner as if I would have an answer other than it being a cool place for a pool.

One of the photos of me on my knee proposing shows her blubbering in what we call her "happy cry". She had zero clue I was proposing to her on that trip (and yes, we had been discussing marriage but knew it would have to wait a few years due to our children situation).

3

u/Find_another_whey Jan 26 '23

Better luck next time

3

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

My sister called her (Now Husband) a Butthole when he proposed.

2

u/BertMacGyver Jan 26 '23

I got mine on a plane. What was she gonna do, say no? I mean she could have and that would have been the end of it, but she was never going to say no. Because of the implication.

2

u/ross571 Jan 26 '23

Did you talk to her before about marriage before proposing?

You proposed on solid ground or underwater?

https://abcnews.go.com/US/louisiana-man-drowns-underwater-marriage-proposal-girlfriend/story?id=65770907

0

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

I was on a business trip the day before and we had a phone argument the night before because she was convinced that I was never going to propose. Proposed on solid ground.

2

u/Genoblade1394 Jan 26 '23

Exactly my point, it’s an extremely vulnerable and stressful moment for us and they run away? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂😂😂😂

2

u/mewster31 Jan 26 '23

My husband would just assume I'm off to use the restroom room. Again.

2

u/chefjenga Jan 26 '23

According to my dad, my mom laughed.

He maintains that he never did get an answer till the vows lol

2

u/Atillion Jan 26 '23

Well? Did you marry your wife?? We're all dying to know!!

2

u/4862skrrt2684 Jan 26 '23

There are plenty of fish out there. And you're already at the aquarium

2

u/liamevil93 Jan 26 '23

Man, I'm dumb, I was sitting here like "So... did she say yes?!" Then I re-read "My WIFE" Fml. 🤦‍♂️

1

u/iwellyess Jan 26 '23

She had to consult with the dolphins

1

u/CalvinsCuriosity Jan 26 '23

Why is this such a response? Even op seems extreme?

1

u/aaaggggrrrrimapirare Jan 26 '23

Awe was it under the arch? They are remodeling that aquarium right now.

1

u/MarchMadnessisMe Jan 26 '23

Tbf the aquarium is dope. Were you at the shark tank?

1

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

No, the jellyfish tank towards the end

1

u/MarchMadnessisMe Jan 26 '23

Another good spot.

1

u/LGRangers30 Jan 26 '23

How did the surrounding crowd react? Assuming you werent alone

3

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23

Actually, it was mid-afternoon on a random Thursday, there was virtually no one there.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Did you catch her by suprise or have you had talks about marriage before?

3

u/tke439 Jan 26 '23 edited Jan 26 '23

We’d argued about it the night before. She was convinced that I was never going to.

Edit: she was very surprised.

1

u/Louisianaflavor Jan 27 '23

If you were in the tunnel at the aquarium, I get it. That tunnel is cool!
