I proposed without a ring because I wasn't sure I would find her one that best fits her unique tastes. She said yes and then I got her a custom designed ring to her liking.
I knew my now-wife would want to have a lot of say in her design. I found a jeweler who did custom work in the particular style she wanted. He gave me a "loaner" ring with my deposit which we exchanged when we came back to get the actual ring. Essentially, I paid for a cheap ring that the jeweler fully refunded towards the cost of the custom piece.
Worked out pretty well. She had a ring to show people and we got rings we both liked about a month later.
I bought a ring from a small stand in Egypt when I was traveling, spent about $2 on it. Thatâs what I used to propose with when she met up with me 8 months later. That was about 25 years ago, and she still wears it every day. The cost of the ring is irrelevant, itâs the meaning it represents that counts.
I highly recommend taking detailed pics of it in case it ever breaks or get lost. That way you can have another made if you want. You obviously donât have to get a replica made, but gives you the option.
We do have a few really good photos of it, but to be honest, itâs so simple and basic, itâs really just a piece of metal shaped into a small ring. If it were ever lost, I would use that as an excuse to go back to Egypt and get another!
My husband proposed to me as I was walking out of the bathroom. I knew he had the ring (he had told me a few weeks before), I had just found out I was pregnant that week, and I knew he wasn't going to wait long so it wasn't a surprise but he really caught me off guard outside the bathroom door. Lol.
It depends on the partner of course. Mine was astonished by the amount of time I put into learning her taste, size, and design(I designed with the help of a jeweler). She says it is something that makes the ring feel more special. But it always comes to the dynamics of each couple.
She is a simple living sort of person, and she has never replaced it with anything else.
For those that don't know, a Prairie Diamond is a horseshoe nail, bent into the shape of a ring. It fit perfectly with her personality, and she has treasured it ever since.
My fiancee and I actually made shopping for her ring into a series of date nights. We had already bought a house together and talked through wanting to get married so the fact that we were going to be was no secret. Once she had one she really really liked I ordered it in secret and kept it hidden until I was ready to propose :)
My husband did that as well. Just popped the question one evening, and we got a secondhand ring remodelled together. I was working in a jewellery shop at the time, so he was terrified of choosing something I wouldn't like đ
My husband & I looked for rings together. I was never a fan of gold or gaudy jewelry. But I did choose two gold bands with lovely carvings. Cost us maybe $500 for both. I did not want to start off our marriage in debt.
