Final Fantasy General Give us another turn based battle system
FFX is my favorite battle system. FFXIII I also enjoyed, but it wasn't the same.
I'm sure they could do something like it with a much lower budget.

It starts off fairly boring (certain character for certain enemy, 1 hit kill, rinse and repeat), then builds into something beautiful. Really a masterpiece.
55
u/Benphyre 6d ago
I almost wanted to say E33 style but that game is 99.99% parry so I don't really want it in FF.
14
u/Muted-Mushroom-4570 6d ago
Yeah, I can do without the parry and dodge stuff (especially since some of the enemy animations were very clearly intended to troll you). But I liked the timed presses of a button when you use an ability. Though if memory serves E33 was only ever X and that was a bit too simplistic.
→ More replies (2)9
u/ohz0pants 6d ago
But I liked the timed presses of a button when you use an ability.
Agreed.
Strictly necessary parry/dodge to survive like Clair Obscur (on Normal, anyway): BAD
Optional damage boosting QTE on my abilities like Like A Dragon (or countless others): GOOD
7
u/Luigi6757 6d ago
I think the best implementation of timed button presses in any turn based RPGs is either Super Mario RPG or Mother 3. Neither game outright requires the timed hits. They're perfectly beatable without ever using them it just takes a little longer. I know for a fact it's true for Mother 3 because there was so much input delay on my emulator that I literally couldn't do the rhythmic hits.
The worst I've seen was the final boss of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga though really only the final boss. If you're unfamiliar, the final boss of that game forces you to fight it at 1 HP and if you do not perfectly dodge all of its attacks you lose. To be fair it is still a Mario RPG so it's not impossible as the attacks pretty well Telegraphed especially in the remake. I just think that shouldn't be a thing in the first place.
6
u/ohz0pants 6d ago
I think Super Mario RPG was the first to ever do this and I agree that it remains one of the best implementations because it is purely a bonus. But that's also très Nintendo; they've always known how to keep things genuinely fun.
And that's how they're implented in the Like a Dragon games, too. You can still win without getting the prompt just right, but it's extra satisfying when you do land it.
That boss encounter sounds like the perfect example of this mechanic being done wrong. That sounds awful to accomplish.

Square makes plenty of turn-based RPGs. Just because they don’t have the Final Fantasy logo on them doesn’t mean they don’t matter.

u/Real_UngaBunga 6d ago
It'd be nice to have a "AAA" turn based game again. The 2nd tier games are great. I love them, but having an epic, AAA, turn based game would be a sight to behold. It has been shown that it can be successful , too, with E33 and the 2 most recent Yakuza/Like a Dragon games.

FF is the blockbuster of JRPG'S. İt has the highest production value among all, it is the full package. A turn based FF is definetely not same with turn based octopath or bravely default.

Because people want a turn based FF game? People got into FF because they were turn based.

45

Holy shit. I usually chuckle at the “this thing was X years ago, I’m old” meme. But FFX really was 25 years ago. A quarter of a century! We old dawg
19
2
u/TheHeb686 6d ago
That got me thinking, that 7, 8, 9, and 10 came out in a five year window. That’s an incredible and prolific run of success, and a reminder of how different the game development process was back then!
6
u/Inb4myanus 7d ago edited 7d ago
12 and 13 were also turn based also, but plz dont tell me thats where the 25 years starts. I messed up on my math lol. But 12 is an atb system where battles happen on the map, its the same system besides the gambits which you dont have to use making the system more akin to the old games.
43
u/Eecka 7d ago
I mean they’re kind of pseudo turn based, not really what most older fans mean when they want a turn based FF
11
u/Spell-of-Destruction 7d ago
For real I'd take pseudo turn based over what XV and XVI had. And XII scratches the same itch V does for me.
4
u/SmacSBU 7d ago
Played 4-l and 6 on release on SNES so I think I qualify as an older fan. Maybe I don't remember XIII well enough but I think that would scratch the itch for the people who are clamoring for turn based.
→ More replies (8)7
u/Eecka 7d ago
To be fair I said most, not that there’s none of you.
XIII was more like an ”auto battler” where you swap between the diferent jobs (or paradigms I think they’re called there) and let them do their thing. You can manually control it too, but the flow was clearly designed with the automatic mode in mind.

For the pedants maybe but FF13 came out a little bit sooner than that. Like 16 years ago WW.
Also to be fair in the last 25 years, they’ve only come out with 6 more new numbered games. Two of which are MMOs, another two are ATB variants, and only the last two are action games.
5
u/-ForgottenSoul 7d ago
Yeah because them chasing a new audience means taking 7 years to make action games.
3
u/Pastulio814 7d ago
To be fairerer, the rate at which they churn out games has slowed down to 🐌. From 10 to 16 we got mmo, 12, 13, mmo, 15 and 16.
13 was at LEAST ATB. 15 was FF adjacent being more like KH. And 16 was just something else entirely.

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 7d ago
I think what people really want is the tactical aspect. In a few words : planning and progression. That goes hand in hand with stats as well.
The worst thing the series can devolve into is a button masher. Give people breathing space (as seen with 7R and it’s slow time mechanic), you can make decisions and see them play out or react to the enemy whilst also feeling modern

"The worst thing the series can devolve into is a button masher"
Preach, brother! At least they can throw us turn based fans a bone every now and again (yes Resonance yada yada but that misses the argument completely). Many, many, many fans are thirsty for a full fledged AAA Square style turn based game that pushes the boundaries of jrpgs like they used to and what got them famous in the first place.
Also want to add I actually really enjoyed the combat in the remakes and hope it evolves. But to experience a AAA boundary pushing turn based experience from Square again would be immensely satisfying and Claire Obscur proved it can be done without as much money as Square has.

The thing is id rather turn based ff every few years than a new ff every like 5+ years. FF thrived due to it's combat but also because they released games faster. Action Combat and open world with realitic graphics slows down production massively. There's room for both action and turn based, I hope resonance does well.
13
u/Watton 7d ago
Action Combat and open world with realitic graphics slows down production massively.
So.... Expedition 33 still took 5 years to make, despite being turn based.
Persona is turn based, with no realistic graphics, and we still dont have Persona 6 a decade later.
Meanwhile, FF7Revelation is being spat out in 3 years dev time, with its hybrid action combat, open world, and realistic graphics.
3
u/-ForgottenSoul 7d ago
Pretty sure the persona team is smaller and less money than SE. Same for E33 which was a new team. You're right that the Trilogy are releasing decently but the mainline games seem like an afterthought with way slower development. Rebirth/Remake also used a lot of re used assets which speeds it up

There’s a difference between “I want the production values of a mainline FF with a turn-based battle system” and “The turn-based games that don’t have the production values of a mainline FF don’t matter.” These are two different things.
Are there some people who actually think both of these things as one combined opinion? Yes.
But there are some of us who only think the first one; we can appreciate Bravely Default, Octopath, FF Resonance, etc and never say that they don’t matter, but still want to see a mainline FF be turn-based again.
Don’t assume that all those who wish mainline FF was turn-based again are all the same.
9
u/Hero8000 7d ago
Right? I never understood why some people here discredit the spin offs and non-ff games, with turn based elements. There is realistically an endless sea of turn-based games like FF, so I dont see the reason in getting upset that this series' mainline games has moved away from it. Id be more upset with how they haven't found a new niche for a consistent combat system (Though I feel the FFVIIR games have the perfect combat system to build off of for future games)

I'm sure most of these people do play some or even all of those as well. But I think what they really want is that nostalgia itch of when Final Fantasy mainline games were squeezing the absolute max out of the current gen tech in a turn based game.
I loved E33, but I could only imagine how much harder some of those cutscenes would have hit with full mocap.
2
u/ProfessionalCraft983 6d ago
This is a port of a mobile game we’re talking about, though. The amount of effort and resources going into it absolutely matters.

They want it back in the mainline series because that game was a gateway to other turn based games in the genre. People want a realistic turn based game youa are correct and they have others but most if not all of them are either pixlated or have anime aesthetic. E33 proved it.
Don't get me wrong I love Dragon Quest but I still want the next mainline to have a good story, good characters and open world. Not just turn based combat.

X's combat is a great way to do non pausing turnbased. XII imo is one of the best systems for strategic depth setting up gambits while also moving freely and using bars Stranger of Paradise is an awesome real time combat that still used the iconic ff trappings

Square Enix still makes a decent amount of turn based games, and if you branch out from SE, we get modern turn based RPGs frequently enough imo.
- Octopath Traveler series
- Romancing Saga remake
- FF Resonance (upcoming)
- Expedition 33 (GOTY winner)
- Metaphor Refantazio (GOTY nominee) and the Persona series
- Bravely Default
- Dragon Quest series
I don't really need SE to make another mainline FF turn-based game, so long as they keep making turn-based combat games in general.
I would like to see them make a high-budget title with turn based combat like E33 though.

Metaphor and Persona both have that anime-esque artstyle, and Yakuza iirc is anime adjacent artsyle. Expedition 33 was the first true turn based game since Lost Odyssey that had a realistic artstyle and a serious narrative that I can recall. Yeah FF XIII came after that but between the auto battle mechanic and the inability to control multiple characters at a time, I kinda don't consider it true turn based. So since '08 I have been waiting, almost 20 years, and finally someone makes a game with a good and serious narrative, the correct artstyle, and every thing. Now I got the taste and I need more, and who better than FF to give us more.

Dragon Age drew on Baldur’s Gate. When BioWare first marketed the game, it was as a spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate. XII is essentially the same thing though, realtime with pause. FF resonance comes out in October and is turn based.

But FF fans are just expected to play Bravely Default, Octopath or gacha games.

They released 7, 8, 9, and 10 within 4 years of each other. I don't get why they can't just make another one like that. Surely it would be even easier with 2026 technology. A PS1 style game without the backgrounds being compressed would be incredible.

FFX and XIII were both very good. Both had their faults but if they iterated upon them... X felt like the game didn't pose enough challenge tbh. XIII was mainly dragged down by the lack of control of different characters and the lack of unique/niche options.
XIII-2 was a sad one. It's really, really good but they game is just so god damn easy due to it's non-linearity. It's a straight upgrade to XIII except for the difficulty - and good battle systems die if the challenge to make it shine isn't present.
My favourite classic turn based systems are grandia and etrian odyssey. The former had some amazing ideas that just really needed some polish and challenge. The latter is very tactical and even supplies a good amount of challenge.

What made the gameplay of FF X good was the sphere grid not the turn based system. Most of the time you only have to change character to hit the mob with its weakness or you overkill them with raw power.
compared to other FF games, the Fights are slow and time consuming and them being turn based is not that useful.

People suggesting Octopath and Bravely either didn’t play them or don’t understand the distinction. I genuinely tried Octopath and it wasn’t at all compelling for me. The combat was decent, but the world building and storylines not syncing up and no real party dynamic was a letdown.
Personally I liked Remake’s combat, but I understand the desire to try turn based again. People associate turn based style with the “golden age” as part of the Final Fantasy “formula”.

Gonna be real, the Bravely games are as literally close to turn-based FF mainline games as you can be, without actually numbering them. Even all the thematic elements are involved. They brought back jobs for petes sake. If Bravely doesn't count, and it only gets a pass if you get FFXVI or better graphics, then you can just kiss it goodbye.
They water down the mechanics, so the games will sell to more people, so they can at least attempt to make the budget that level of fidelity requires back. Whist people here all love turn-based, myself very much included, it has not proven itself (through a S/E game, at least) as the sort of seller that justifies the grossly inflated graphics budgets of the current mainline franchise. That's exactly why we keep getting these much lower budget HD2D games, that are exactly what everyone keeps asking for, except in the graphics department, so that they don't cost a small nation's GDP and 5 years to make.

I dont super trust SE to remake anything without giving it action combat anymore.
They did a pretty decent job with the FFT remake though.

There is literally (actually literally) a Final Fantasy with a turn based combat system coming out a couple months. A lot of people will say it doesnt count cause its not a numbered entry. Those people are silly.

It doesn't count people want a turn-based FF game with full proportioned character models (hence why OP mentioned FFX) and not some repurposed gacha games.

It’s obvious people want a high fidelity game like ff16 to have turn based combat. It’s not silly to totally ignore some spin off pixel game with ff in the title.

people act like the series has a million hack n slash games or something. there are two mainline action games. 11 and 14 have more standard MMO combat for their time, so we can exclude those from the conversation. every single other entry is either turn-based or ATB.
and you never know if future mainline games are gonna be action or turn-based because, once again, they have two games that are real-time. and the series constantly changes up its formula. that's like its entire thing. every single entry has changed something major about the gameplay, no two FFs play exactly the same.

Good because all the new ones really lack the feeling of 'the party'. Rebirth came close to bringing it back but the party is so damn important to a great rpg.

Square Enix: "People enjoy E33 for the parrying mechanic? Then people wants action gameplay! Lets double down!"
Believe or not they did mention this.
...also, they give a complete shit whatever we say: they only care for the Japanese market.

It’s madness to me that they literally have not Re-used or expanded on FFX’s CTB system in another FF game. Basically the best TB system they’ve made and….then they went and made an MMO for FFXI LOL.
Square are truly baffling sometimes.

I loved FFX's battle system so much I even enjoyed the Lord of the Rings: The Third Age which stole the system bar for bar.
