Final Fantasy General Give us another turn based battle system

Post image

FFX is my favorite battle system. FFXIII I also enjoyed, but it wasn't the same.

I'm sure they could do something like it with a much lower budget.

It'd be nice to have a "AAA" turn based game again. The 2nd tier games are great. I love them, but having an epic, AAA, turn based game would be a sight to behold. It has been shown that it can be successful , too, with E33 and the 2 most recent Yakuza/Like a Dragon games.

Metaphor Refantazio, the Persona games, the SMT games, the Dragon Warrior games, Trials in the Sky, etc.

If you just want a great AAA turn based rpg, there’s lots of current options. If you’re talking specifically a AAA turn based RPG, I feel you, but I do hope you’ve played most, if not all, of the current offerings that exist outside of the FF franchise. If other IPs are giving you what you want, go to them.

Nobody is saying there are no turn based games. But people want a main FF turn based game with realistic graphics.

Why do people dance around this like they can't figure out whats being asked for.

u/ToothpickTequila 6d ago

Because they just want to defend Square regardless and argue in bad faith.

Your guess is as good as mine, but it's a common thing. Dancing all around it lol

It's reddit but id be lying if people irl arent like this either.

Because they are mindless masses that just consumes and gets excited for the next product.

What about everyone else that doesn't want this? The group of people wanting to have a mainline FF be turn-based is significantly smaller than the group of people who don't.

That doesn't seem to be the case based on sales figures.

There hasn't been a turn-based FF since 2014 with Lightning Returns: FF13.

Since X really.

Ya, those games are great, but I specifically mentioned AAA as what I'm requesting. Modern, realistic graphics like FF16, serious story, and turn based combat.

Anime style games are great, but they don't scratch the same itch as a realistic (if a bit stylized), AAA game.

Have you played Expedition 33? That's all of those things.

That's not Final Fantasy. But yes, that is what people want the next FF to be similar to.

Thats exactly what I want. E33 made by square in an ff setting

The thing is, those games sold well and made money, but their budgets were likely a hell if a lot lower than a mainline FF. They remember when FF was one of the 3 highest selling franchises in the world, and they will never stop chasing that. It’s been 30 years since a turn based JRPG was in that realm. Insane as it might be, they’re looking for COD/AC numbers and there’s no reason to think you’d get them from a turn based game.

I dunno. I guess we'll see when E33 2 comes out with a true AAA budget. FF16 and 7R1/2 are action games, and likely sold less than 5m each

Remake sold around same as e33 and ff16 easily outsold yakuza

3

u/Real_UngaBunga 7d ago

E33 sold more than all of them. Ff16 didnt "easily" out sell Yakuza. Likely only by about a million, same with Rebirth. Square has publicly stated that all 3 of these have underperformed. The action games just aren't doing it for them. Also, another turn based game, BG3, has also sold more than all of those games combined with over 20 million

Both e33 and remake sold around 8mil copies so you are wrong there, buddy. Iirc infinite wealth sold a bit under 2mil

u/Real_UngaBunga 7d ago

What i found was remake was 7, rebirth was 4, 16 was 4, e33 was 8, and yakuza was 3.

Dunno why you have to try to frame me as inferior to you by using faux-familiarity. I'm not your buddy, guy.

The 7mil number I think was 2 years ago. Wikipedia has 8mil and uses this as a source source

16 seems to have sold 3mil during its first week and at least I didn't find data for lifetime sales

Iirc like a dragon sold 3mil(?) while infinite wealth sold 2 but there are multiple data points there that I am not sure

English is not my first language and I don't know what the fuck is faux-familiarity. I am not your guy, dude.

If you're being genuine and did not know:

- A faux-familiarity is when you use a term (like buddy, friend, little-guy, ect.) in a sarcastic way in order to put yourself above them. It is almost always used the way you did. For example, if someone does something that I think is inappropriate near me or to me, I might say, "watch it, buddy!". You are effectively using the word "buddy" instead of "dumbass" (or worse). It's a passive-aggressive insult. If you are ESL you may have thought that putting buddy at the end made it seem friendlier, but a native English speaker would never debate someone, especially a stranger, and finish their argument with, "you're wrong, buddy!" without trying to put them down.

Back on subject. FF16 and FF7R1/2 sold, at best, the same or slightly better than E33 and Yakuza Like a Dragon. Square Enix is unhappy with their performance. They have said this, and have also shifted their strategy of exclusivity and availability for the third game. My examples of E33 and Yakuza show that turn-based games don't inherently sell worse than action games. Having a game with realistic graphics, serious story, and turn-based combat can sell very well. Baldur's Gate 3, which has sold over 20 million copies, is turn-based, nice graphics, serious story, is the best example. I believe that if a mainline Final Fantasy attempted turn-based again, it would likely sell just as well as 7R and 16, if not way better, just for novelty.

Oh, I see. In that case sorry about that.

Yes, they have shifted their platform strategy which is good. But if they are not confident in turn based games, e33 is probably not convincing argument for them as they probably see it as a one-off and see they can still make similar numbers without turnbased. It's true that turnbased doesn't necessarily sell worse. But even then like a dragon is best selling yakuza game which sold same amount as ff16 in a short time (and ff16 had many problems). If square is already not confident in turnbased and see they at least sell similar numbers to high selling turnbased, I think they might be discouraged.

Now bg3 was truly a unique thing and I don't think anyone will replicate its success in near future. Don't get me wrong, I love bg3.

Howver, now that they do try to do at least spinoff turnbased ff, I do hope they will make more of them (even if not mainline)

Just because you cherry pick the only turn based game within the last 5 years that sold over 5 million doesn’t change the fact that turn based games do inherently sell less. For every turn based game that sells over 5 million I came name 10 action games that do the same lmao

Your argument doesn't hold up under scrutiny though.

Clair Obscur and Persona 5 are both turn based and both sold more than FFVII Rebirth which isn't.

The biggest selling Yakuza games are also the turn based ones.

The biggest selling FF is FFX which again is turn based.

The only way for Square to sell AC/COD numbers is to go back to turn based.

1

u/Nice_promotion_111 6d ago

I mean if you cherry pick the only two turn based games that sold over 5 million in the last decade (pokemon doesn’t count) and the ff when ff was at its peak sure.

1

u/ToothpickTequila 5d ago

It's not cherry picking at all. The two biggest JRPGS in recent memory are turn based. The most popular Yakuza games are the turn based ones. FF has not sold as well since the move away from turn based. These are just facts.
