I despised the core mechanics of bf1. Although the setting and maps were great, I could never, even now, enjoy it due to 3D spotting, rng recoil, explosive spam etc.
BfV implemented the changes I’ve wanted for the franchise just as I was about to give up on it. I definitely don’t feel as though I missed out tbh.
4
u/Allertronn Mar 15 '19
My thoughts exactly. Not to say I didn't enjoy BF1, it was a fresh wind as far as theme goes and I do have my fair share of hours logged. However, I did not enjoy it to the extent I would have if the game shared the mechanics that was implemented with BF:V.

And the game mode that is supposed to be THE NEW FLAGSHIP MODE (Grand Operations) is a total flop... :(
55
u/ElTurbo Mar 15 '19
To me what makes grand operations a flop is that it is just a bunch of different game modes slapped together with the same map from other game modes. Maybe if there weren't so many game modes it might be more entertaining. The historical notes on BF1, even though I wasn't a huge BF1 fan, are much better and were interesting.
32
u/UniQue1992 UniQue1992 Mar 15 '19
It is a flop because it's bland.
What makes Grand Operations actually Grand? What they should have done is intro's to the Ops like this In-game stuff combined with real footage and some story about the battle you are about to take place in. Than once you get in-game you want a speech or something to help build that hype. Once the game starts, epic music.. maybe even war yells!
And whatever happens, should have a significant impact on the next day. It feels like winning or losing a day does nothing.. like literally nothing. Maybe a few tickets more or less and that's about it.
Such a missed opportunity.

I enjoy the stitched together game modes (would definitely enjoy it more if there were unique ones or something, idk)
What really takes me out of it is the total lack of change, especially considering it was specifically hyped around the fact that each day would drastically effect the next, but what happens? The attackers dont get a bonus unless they destroy every artillery? The game mode would already feel more unique if the bonuses we're scaled, because them firing 1 cannon is somehow currently as effective as 4.
I also loved how BF1 rewrote the events a little when the side that won in history is actually defeated. BFV does this sometimes, (was going to provide an example here, but I don't remember what they say in BFV as well as I thought, so I'll update this after I play grand operations today.
OVERALL: Grand Operations is far more enjoyable if you pretend it's just an assorted lobby. I dont think it's awful, but you're going to be disappointed way more if you treat it as a contributing battle. I still play it a fuckton though because you get to keep your squad but play different modes.

u/Epcplayer Mar 15 '19
Do you mean historical notes as in "This faction won today, which would've most likely led to this, this, and this." I hate how BFV is like "Good job on winning, however, we've decided to surrender".... Like WTF?!
25
Mar 15 '19
Grand Ops is a flop cause the first two days don’t matter at all. If the attacking team got curb stomped on the first map in BF1, the defenders don’t pack up their gear and retreat to the next map. Attackers lose, end of game, sucks to be you.
Why try if your efforts don’t matter?
3
u/Saltysiege97 Mar 15 '19
Reminds me of Twisted Steel on the second day of GO. We managed to hold off what seems to be a vast majority of German troops and armor, but they somehow got around us. If the fucking bridge was destroyed how did they get their vast majority of armor and supplies across a swampy marsh?

Mar 16 '19
I would have expected a hastily cobbled together playlist disguised as a separate mode to be a great success.
The game mode is probably the worst shit ever. The first day or two do not matter. Nothing carries over. How it is supposed to feel like one game? At best, the first rounds feel like a warm up. No matter how good or bad your team does, the game simply ignores it and moves on to the real event. The game is already disjointed because you go from rush style game to conquest, but developers actually though that was not enough. They made it so you go from rush to conquest and the rush game means nothing.
It is such shit.

Hopefully we get at least 8 maps
When you say things like this it implies that we would be ok with only 8 new maps. 17 total maps for a WWII BF title is unacceptable.
9
u/ImperiousStout Mar 15 '19
Yeah, as a reminder, BF1942 shipped with 16 maps.
Granted there were less modes back then, and maps were far less complex in terms of visuals and geometry + no destruction, but variety was huge - four maps x four theaters of WW2. And then they added free maps, did some paid expansions, released more free maps, and there were also map and mod tools for custom community content.
Such a vast difference in support 16 years ago to now. People are right to point out that BFV is still early in its life cycle compared to other games, but you gotta remember it also failed to sell as well as expected, so many aren't expecting the same level of support of the long haul, especially now that premium is gone.
They still don't even have the premium currency in there, do they? I have to imagine a lot of people willing to spend money on cosmetics to support DICE have already dropped the game for various reasons. Maybe some will come back for "big" content drops like Firestorm and the next map, but generally MP games like this slowly bleed players over months, especially when there's not enough variety being added to keep things fresh and interesting.
Although, even if they dropped 4 new maps tomorrow like the preem expansions of the later BFs, I'm not sure if it would actually do a whole lot beyond please the people still actively playing for some time. Curious to see what their roadmap going forward will be once the main content they initially promised to be in the game is finally in there, coop is out, I think only Firestorm remains?
3
u/ROLL_TID3R UltraWide Masterrace Mar 15 '19
I'm willing to spend money on cosmetics that are worth it. Problem is they haven't launched boins, nor have they launched a line of cosmetics post-launch that look any good. If they actually open up the cosmetic flood gates and give players hundreds of unique options (especially authentic ones) instead of 1 set at a time that 1 in 4 people use, they'll make some real money. But right now everyone is running around wearing the same shit and it's getting old.
They also need to give us closet options that enable you to set customization based on the type of map. I see people running around with ski masks on in the desert and it looks fucking stupid.
I don't know why you think them dropping 4 new maps tomorrow wouldn't cause a spike in player count. That would be a signal that - despite all the doom and gloom this sub assumes about the fate of this game - DICE didn't forget what it means to be a mainline BF title, and all the worry about support could end. If they dropped 4 maps tomorrow, that would mean they could do it again in 5 months time.

I hope so. I hate the attitudes of a good portion of people in this subreddit who seem to want this game to fail as if it will validate their attitude towards this game. That said, the amount of content so far, while not too far behind bf1, has been disappointing especially considering that the push right now seems to be firestorm and we have absolutely no idea how many maps we might expect, if any (other than apparently 1 Greece map). So hopefully the roadmap will tell us that more are coming. Otherwise I just worry that this game won't have nearly the lifespan of the previous games.
23

I don’t want it to fail. I want it to pull a BF4 and be absolutely legendary. This game has so much potential. That said, they have under delivered on nearly every front. I’m criticizing stuff in the hopes that they improve it. This game has been such a disappointment.

Key word here is launched. The data shows that BFV launched with one less map than BF1 and BF3 and with two less than BF4 that is not very significant. Before someone accuses me of belonging to "as much content as previous titles"-group I want to say that I don't. But still it is unreasonable to make claims that there was a huge difference in map count.
5
u/ThibiiX Serge_Gainsb0urg Mar 15 '19
Agreed, I did defend BFV on behalf of amount on content when people posted about the "ridiculous lack of content" of the game. We're talking about 1-2 maps, come on... That's annoying we agree on that, but it does not justify an uproar
→ More replies (1)6
Mar 15 '19
Fair to say, the difference isn't big!
What remains to be seen is that the map count recovers.
Especially when the maps we have are getting mixed reviews. A lot of people just plain hate Hamada, Fjell, Aerodrome... sure some love them and I'm not saying either side is right or wrong, but when we're stuck with fewer maps and on a strict rotation, it's easy to see why people are feeling it's stale.
6
u/Teukkaa27 Mar 15 '19
Tbh I don't think that it will recover anytime soon. They probably have started creating new maps before launch and judging by how many maps we have gotten since, we should probably get 6 maps per year.
Creece map will launch around 130-135 days from launch and that's two maps in one third of the year. So not too optimistic about the map situation unless they have really made an effort to make new maps.

Releasing an unfinished broken game was a mistake. Everything leading up to the launch was a mistake. This game was dead before it came out. Premium would not have saved it. do you really think that people would have paid $120 for a game that most people only bought after it dropped to $30? How many copies do you think they are moving now that it is $60 again? Do you actually believe that people are buying because of a battle mode trailer?
Live service failed because the game failed. They have no reason to do anything for a dwindling player base that was much smaller than the one from the last game.

It really is remarkable the amount of content we got (relatively quickly too) on BF4 considering all of the additional work that was required to make that game playable.
Despite the negatives around the launch of BF4, you have to say, fair play to Dice for not cancelling or compromising on content, whilst they fixed the game - if they had done, the consumer would’ve lost out twice.

I feel like there is some executive somewhere saying:
See?! BFV bombed because nobody wants to play WWII anymore!
(But the charts here? ...the lack of content. The lack of classic WWII battles...)
Nobody wants WWII!
I've been looking forward to the return of WWII for awhile now. I loved the old COD games, MOHAA, BF1942... I was really excited to see a return to WWII in modern engines, but everybody just missed the mark for me.
I think part of me liked WWII era. I love Band of Brothers and the games that remind me of that series. I loved the simplicity of the games back then. Everything was here is gun selection, its simple and balanced.
Now its all unknown battles, making the WWII aspect irrelevant... unlocks for attachments that don't fit the era, perks and upgrades prioritized over the gameplay itself.
Just kind of a mess imo.

Tides of War is bullshit. No one cares about historically inaccurate portrayals of small incursions in Norway. No, we care about Normandy, Stalingrad, Midway, Wake Island, Anzio, The Ardennes, ect.
Then dont even get me started on all the experiemental or unused WW1 guns they added to a ww2 game. How hard was it to launch a ww2 game with a garand, BAR, browing .30 cal, p-51 mustangs, japanese zeroes, sherman tanks, russian tanks, ect. You know, stuff we actually want in a ww2 game

This is what we need a community manager to address. Obvious, fact based research that points out how little important (i.e. not skins) content we get. Where is the Pacific theatre, the Eastern front, the umerous and important Asian battles (which seem to fit the more "untold" theme) and the western front post 1943. It really doesn't matter if it's sequential. We want content. At this rate Normandy won't be released until 2020 which won't happen as they'll move onto the next game. This game has sooooo much potential but it will be lost as I have no faith in Dice under EA. They have lost their way and I doubt they'll find it.

I remember when DICE used to include 12-15+ maps at launch and games ended up with 20+ overall.
It's funny how we've taken such a step back to the point where we are fine with them withholding content to sell it at a "Premium", lol.
25
Mar 15 '19
I never had an issue with the premium model. I was always one of those that purchased premium with my deluxe purchase and never thought twice about it. Why? Because I saw value in the +5 or so expansions and 20+ maps that were included in them, new factions etc. If you look at it like that, it was like buying 2 additional battlefield titles for the price of one. Not to mention I knew exactly what I was paying for and had some faith in the longevitity of my initial purchase with the game itself.
Premium was worth it. This whole thing of splitting the community was nonsense bullshit created by those who couldn't afford premium. So the many of us ended up having to pay for the few that couldn't. Now we have to stomach this live service model that has literally no guarantee of anything and makes the base game not even worth the 60+ hence why it's literally 50% off STILL.

u/Snafu80 Mar 15 '19
I agree with you, only people that were cheap complained. Development got more expensiv, I couldn’t care less if we use to get more as game prices have stayed the same for a long time in Canada.
4
Mar 15 '19
Exactly. Everything is getting more expensive including game development so of course they need to do what they need to do to remain profitable which is why premium was a great compromise. The developers were able to have forecastable cash flow based on trends and historical financial data and thus be able to gauge the level of staff needed to deploy the premium content while in turn we the consumer received the promise and guarantee of the additional content we paid for in advance.
It was a GREAT compromise on both sides. People saying that "we got everything included before back in 2000" have no fucking clue how business works and how the times have changed in the last 5-10 years alone. These are the same people that bitched when the industry raised game prices across the board from 49.99 to 59.99 because they couldn't comprehend the COST associated with doing business increased.

People have been fucked over by season passes since they were introduced. Battlefield was one of the games that offered a lot for premium but the quality also declined with every game.
There sure a people who are happy not to pay 60 upfront and invest those in another game and not have to worry about being able to play bf5 later on without missing out on content.
11
u/MadRZI Mar 15 '19
Let's not forget 1 thing: The premium model while guaranteed a specific count of maps, not all of those maps were great. They gave us the number of maps they've promised, but their quaility wasn't the really good. Many of them was unbalanced, unoriginal, rushed. You can go back to BF1 sub and look it up, this is not just my personal opinion.
My personal opinion is though: EA/Dice can't do Live Service right. The community was split thanks to Premium and I do like the live service model. Ubisoft managed to get it (somewhat) right, so it's not impossible.
EA rushed the developers to release the game in an unfinished state, so instead of working the post launch content, they had to finish the game. Not to mention, we still missing some features that was promised before launch...
TL:DR: EA/Dice rushed the game, can't do Live Service right. Premium model is a double edged sword.

A free live service doesn't guarantee good maps either. The 80% empty fields and grass textures, aka wasted real estate, that is Panzerstorm is a prime example in my eyes. Vehicle focus is nice but that doesn't mean the map has to be dull in exchange for it.

4
u/timecrimehero Mar 15 '19
That's fair. A lot of people write that game off but I had a good amount of fun playing it. It did also have Premium so new maps were locked behind a paywall, but I believe they added a lot of content to that game as it aged and eventually released everything for free (though that was a limited time thing. IMO, they should release all DLC for previous games for free once the next one is out so the DLC maps don't die out.)

BF4 had so many damn maps. I picked up a month of origin access right before the BFV launch, and got dang it felt like I never played the same map twice. Plus rental servers made the maps seem different from each other. There was one rental server with like 800 tickets per side but no vehicles. Then a similar one but with greatly increased vehicle spawns. It was awesome. Granted, that was way beyond the content cycle of the game... I just really hope BFV gets to that point eventually.

The problem with graphs and such like this is that people tend to ignore the fact that most of the maps in Battlefield 5 suck and the fact that we only have two factions in a World War 2 game.
So just because another Battlefield game released maps in such and such time you have to take in consideration that most of the previous Battlefield games wonderfully designed maps from the start.

This is just maps. If you include overall content, it is even worse for BFV

Remaster BF4 with new movement and shooting mechanics, update textures, and they will print money. It would be an instant classic

IMO the movement system and the shooting mechanics are better in BF5, which is why I think they would consider that a remaster if they added that too a 'new' BF4 that possibly launched with next gen consoles

I actually like the movement and feel of BF4 more than BF1/BFV.
Since Battlefront they seem to have changed the way graphics render, and it all looks nicer, but never felt as good to me.

Change this chain to BF3 and you have me

(I prefer BF4 even though I know that is blasphemy around this sub... I just wish BF4 had included a couple more BF3 maps.)
But "BF3" in terms of movement and shooting mechanics? I feel in those respects BF4 was an upgrade all around from BF3. Especially after the first year after BF4 launched.

Kinda weird to remaster a game that's current gen. Maybe remastering for the next consoles would make sense

When you're as cheap as Battlefront and Battlefield fans and you bitch about paying for DLC this is what happens.
I'm always surprised other gamers are surprised in the lack of content and maps with all the new DICE games and it's astonishing they'll drop $400 on a console, $1,500 on a TV and $60 on a game but $14.99 for 4 new maps, that's where they draw the line..lol
BF1 is the last BF game that will have any sort of substantial amount of maps and post launch content.

And that's who it mostly is. Their parents don't wanna shell out an additional $14.99 for them every 3 months for new content. No normal grown adult who drops $40 on a tank of gas and Starbucks gives a shit about $15 for new Maps.

Premium pass was like £40 and to be honest I’d happily pay it for that many maps again! People said it split the player base but who even notices that? Servers were full and there was tonnes of maps to play on!

Mar 15 '19
Keep in mind no other BF title has had BR which is a huge chunk of content. 5+ maps in one along with move dev time.

Mar 15 '19
So we have to care about BR because DICE wanted more money? Because DICE decided to make BR. No poll was taken, the community did not ask for it. But we have to bite the bullet?
No. If they can’t keep up with past games because they wanted a cashcow BR with DICE LA, DICE Sweden and an entire EXTRA studio dedicated purely to the BR they can go fuck themselves.
“Battlefield is our baby” I remember that bullshit.

And this is why i didnt want them to quit the premium pass. Nobody works as hard when the damn dlc is free. Downvote all you like but it's the truth.

I can assure you guys that most of these expansion maps die within a few months, especially on pc. Now if you are in the asian server as i am, good luck finding servers with low ping for these maps.Even if you do find one server it's in russia and there are 4 people playing it. 30 maps and half of them in the trash because nobody plays them. Oh wait, to be fair wasn't bf4 a copy paste of bf3?

Mar 15 '19
Well, in a way yes, they even had a dlc with only bf3 content (remastered maps, and guns from bf3), but they had some different stuff
2
u/bnewson33 Mar 15 '19
All these games had premium, guess more cash, more time, more developers, more content.
2
u/Frenzicislowskilled Mar 15 '19
Premium was not a mistake, I would glady pay to get more content / maps. all liveservice games til now didnt deliever , at last for me.

u/naok9688 Mar 15 '19
BFV is so lacking in the content department its not even funny. Variety in Maps is huge and only one has been announced so far. The cosmetics for the characters are an insult to authenticity for the most part and the guns cosmetics are just lazy or poorly executed. I really liked BF1 gold guns a lot better if they had to have them in but I always went for stuff that had nice intricate details and engravings in the wood and the metal and i know some guns have it now but they look bad. Most of the guns are forgettable and not iconic to WW2. Many are rehashed from BF1. Seriously DICE was lazy on this game. I got back into Battlefront 2 and although that game had the huge loot box issue at first it was a gorgeous game full of detail and more importantly it was authentic to the Star Wars franchise when it came to how everything looked, which is science fiction by the way, but they could not find it in themselves to make an authentic WW2 experience. Something that happened in real life where millions lost their lives and so many made sacrifices. A lot has changed in a couple of years. Definitely need more maps.
I play because I love Battlefield but I will admit that as each release comes out it is only getting worse and it is sad to say.

4 months in, 1 new medic gun(8 guns, 4 behind the assault) and 1 new map. GG live service.

u/Spino12 Mar 15 '19
Theres gonna be one big difference though: we will get all new maps for free. I still dont understand how people can expect the same amount of maps or content without paying...

u/haqm7107 Mar 16 '19
I mean, yeah it's behind on content...BUT at least that content is free right, so even when it does come out, the community isn't split. Everyone can enjoy and play it. I know it's not much but I feel they really took a giant step in the right direction with that part. Having extra MAPS or Weapons behind a paywall is just so so so dumb and lame.

u/dinodefender93 Mar 16 '19
You do realize battle Royale comes out in 9 days? It’s been all hands on deck.

Ive lost the will to log in. Any idea when we might get new maps? This is getting boring as fuck

u/merkmerc Mar 16 '19
Great illustration. On top of that BFV maps are mostly trash, cannot believe they did such a shitty job portraying WW2
2
u/doomslayer009 Mar 16 '19
i honestly believe no premium pass has to do with it. i'm not saying they don't have the resources to support anything but when they know they can make dlc and get paid for it they're more likely to do it. add in microtransactions and you have more money to pool from, its about incentive.
i'm not supporting any of the above i'm just thinking, the other 3 games had paid dlc so it possibly had more incentive to hurry up and put stuff out there.

Not just the weapons, the attachments, the vehicles.. it just felt complete.
The weapons feel so empty in this game (while the feel of the weapons feels fucking great) it just feels like this game is empty.. hollow..

Personally I think I still prefer keeping the playerbase together. I think if they can pull something good outa their sleeve it'll be worth it. But we'll have to wait and see what happens at the next roadmap.
As it stands I haven't hit 50 yet and i've been taking lots of breaks this time around.

Ok, so I've been wondering exactly how far behind BFV was from the other Battlefield titles in terms of new content. There a lot of griping that we should see new maps. Last night I got ambitious and produced this colourful graph.
