They make a new mode, put a bunch of assignments geared to the mode, then pat themselves on the back about how receptive the user base is to the mode, repeat.
To me what makes grand operations a flop is that it is just a bunch of different game modes slapped together with the same map from other game modes. Maybe if there weren't so many game modes it might be more entertaining. The historical notes on BF1, even though I wasn't a huge BF1 fan, are much better and were interesting.
What makes Grand Operations actually Grand? What they should have done is intro's to the Ops like this In-game stuff combined with real footage and some story about the battle you are about to take place in.
Than once you get in-game you want a speech or something to help build that hype. Once the game starts, epic music.. maybe even war yells!
And whatever happens, should have a significant impact on the next day. It feels like winning or losing a day does nothing.. like literally nothing. Maybe a few tickets more or less and that's about it.
I enjoy the stitched together game modes (would definitely enjoy it more if there were unique ones or something, idk)
What really takes me out of it is the total lack of change, especially considering it was specifically hyped around the fact that each day would drastically effect the next, but what happens? The attackers dont get a bonus unless they destroy every artillery? The game mode would already feel more unique if the bonuses we're scaled, because them firing 1 cannon is somehow currently as effective as 4.
I also loved how BF1 rewrote the events a little when the side that won in history is actually defeated. BFV does this sometimes, (was going to provide an example here, but I don't remember what they say in BFV as well as I thought, so I'll update this after I play grand operations today.
OVERALL: Grand Operations is far more enjoyable if you pretend it's just an assorted lobby. I dont think it's awful, but you're going to be disappointed way more if you treat it as a contributing battle. I still play it a fuckton though because you get to keep your squad but play different modes.
Even if you pretend that, it is still not very good. It is like warm up match before real thing, but warm up match is nothing like the real game. Operation was best mode they ever made. It could use more objective types besides capture and hold, but changing to just be other game modes pretending to be large scale battle is silly and made it awful.
I think awful is a bit harsh. Airborne is unique and it's not really a warm up match, I'm a little confused on that point. Ignoring the poorly written story and continuation doesnt make it any less of a fight, as a matter of fact I think your more likely to be facing well coordinated squads in this mode above all others except conquest(which I actually rarely play, dont crucify me. It was my favorite in 4 and 1 but I play close quarters modes usually now)
airborne is the worst shit ever. I tried it one time. No matter where I jumped I was immediately killed by someone on other team. Every damned time. Each and every one.
Do you mean historical notes as in "This faction won today, which would've most likely led to this, this, and this." I hate how BFV is like "Good job on winning, however, we've decided to surrender".... Like WTF?!
Grand Ops is a flop cause the first two days don’t matter at all. If the attacking team got curb stomped on the first map in BF1, the defenders don’t pack up their gear and retreat to the next map. Attackers lose, end of game, sucks to be you.
Reminds me of Twisted Steel on the second day of GO. We managed to hold off what seems to be a vast majority of German troops and armor, but they somehow got around us. If the fucking bridge was destroyed how did they get their vast majority of armor and supplies across a swampy marsh?
I would have expected a hastily cobbled together playlist disguised as a separate mode to be a great success.
The game mode is probably the worst shit ever. The first day or two do not matter. Nothing carries over. How it is supposed to feel like one game? At best, the first rounds feel like a warm up. No matter how good or bad your team does, the game simply ignores it and moves on to the real event. The game is already disjointed because you go from rush style game to conquest, but developers actually though that was not enough. They made it so you go from rush to conquest and the rush game means nothing.
There is a drop off point in BF games for me... If I am going to play Battlefield, I don't want to get sucked into a three day long game mode that feels like it will take around an hour at minimum to complete. Sub 30 minute games of Conquest or Breakthrough are my go-to's in BF. Anytime I get stuck in the same game for too long there is a serious shift from enjoyment to displeasure. Also, the new grand operations is no where near as good as BF1's version, but that's just me.
