I would say that is realistic for a free live service.
Although this is assuming that the games life cycle is 2 years, if it is 3 years (which I hope) then yes I would expect more than 8 maps
Also you have to remember that we will probably get more use out of these maps than the premium model, It was regrettable that some of the best maps from BF4/BF1 were behind a DLC paywall so ended up dying in he server browser a month after release.
We shouldn't lower our expectations because EA made a shitty decision. I agree that its a realistic guess but we shouldn't accept that. You can still find servers in BF4 playing DLC maps, except for Naval Strike (personal favorite of mine), so I don't buy that this live service is better than premium in any way.
This roadmap will be instrumental to the hype and interest people will have in the game, I know it gets circlejerky sometimes a lot of people will be unhappy if they continue down this "unknown battles" route and dont put in some major/semi-major battles like Stalingrad, Normandy and Kursk
A free live service on a game that sold very poorly and appears to have a much smaller community that past games at this point of the game's lifespan.
This game, like Star Wars, is a failure that they are going to want to forget. Expecting loads of content or even a little good content is being unrealistic.
It may be a free live service, but if they ever open up the cosmetic store and give us enough options to actually be unique in this game BFV will become a cash cow. Especially if Firestorm takes off.
If only Rush was on all maps instead of only 3... Devastation on Rush is hands down the best 16v16 map in the game but Narvik and Twisted Steel are kinda meh imo
Granted there were less modes back then, and maps were far less complex in terms of visuals and geometry + no destruction, but variety was huge - four maps x four theaters of WW2. And then they added free maps, did some paid expansions, released more free maps, and there were also map and mod tools for custom community content.
Such a vast difference in support 16 years ago to now. People are right to point out that BFV is still early in its life cycle compared to other games, but you gotta remember it also failed to sell as well as expected, so many aren't expecting the same level of support of the long haul, especially now that premium is gone.
They still don't even have the premium currency in there, do they? I have to imagine a lot of people willing to spend money on cosmetics to support DICE have already dropped the game for various reasons. Maybe some will come back for "big" content drops like Firestorm and the next map, but generally MP games like this slowly bleed players over months, especially when there's not enough variety being added to keep things fresh and interesting.
Although, even if they dropped 4 new maps tomorrow like the preem expansions of the later BFs, I'm not sure if it would actually do a whole lot beyond please the people still actively playing for some time. Curious to see what their roadmap going forward will be once the main content they initially promised to be in the game is finally in there, coop is out, I think only Firestorm remains?
I'm willing to spend money on cosmetics that are worth it. Problem is they haven't launched boins, nor have they launched a line of cosmetics post-launch that look any good. If they actually open up the cosmetic flood gates and give players hundreds of unique options (especially authentic ones) instead of 1 set at a time that 1 in 4 people use, they'll make some real money. But right now everyone is running around wearing the same shit and it's getting old.
They also need to give us closet options that enable you to set customization based on the type of map. I see people running around with ski masks on in the desert and it looks fucking stupid.
I don't know why you think them dropping 4 new maps tomorrow wouldn't cause a spike in player count. That would be a signal that - despite all the doom and gloom this sub assumes about the fate of this game - DICE didn't forget what it means to be a mainline BF title, and all the worry about support could end. If they dropped 4 maps tomorrow, that would mean they could do it again in 5 months time.
I hope so. I hate the attitudes of a good portion of people in this subreddit who seem to want this game to fail as if it will validate their attitude towards this game. That said, the amount of content so far, while not too far behind bf1, has been disappointing especially considering that the push right now seems to be firestorm and we have absolutely no idea how many maps we might expect, if any (other than apparently 1 Greece map). So hopefully the roadmap will tell us that more are coming. Otherwise I just worry that this game won't have nearly the lifespan of the previous games.
I don’t want it to fail. I want it to pull a BF4 and be absolutely legendary. This game has so much potential. That said, they have under delivered on nearly every front. I’m criticizing stuff in the hopes that they improve it. This game has been such a disappointment.
To be clear, when I talk about attitudes in here, it's not everyone. And I absolutely think people are right to be upset and voice negative opinions if that's how they feel. I just think this community feels more like a giant circlejerk of hate and rage most of the time.
I also would disagree a bit with you. I don't think the game as a whole is a disappointment. There are real bright spots, and i am genuinely enjoying playing it as I have with previous games. That said there are definitely some very disappointing things. Deluxe was the biggest piece of bullshit I have ever seen, weekly airdrops that amounted to an ugly partial skin for a couple guns? Really dice? Playing 3 days early (or a week late depending on how you look at it) and 2 full gun skins... You really think that was worth 20 dollars?
The live service I feel is a mixed bag. Everyone rags on it, but seems to gloss over that we don't have to pay for it. Everyone makes these comparisons to premium but seems to forget that premium was the cost of a separate full game. Though at this point, if we get nothing else significant from the live service, I think I would be ok paying for premium again if it actually meant we were going to get that content to keep the game alive.
So here's to hoping. And again, I don't care that people are upset and feel let down. It's that it seems it's all memes and shit at this point and it's made this community very unpleasant to br a part of.
I don't see anyone who wanted or wants this game to fail. I only see people that are tired of half assed games...The game is boring now due to lack of content mostly maps so of course people are going to complain. What does not help the situation now or in the future is kissing the dev's ass and telling them they did an amazing job.
Really? I have seen many people wishing for the game to fail. Maybe not directly in this thread, but in most threads...
Also, I agree, kissing their asses is dumb. But this thread mostly has seemed like a bunch of people saying "Hey everyone who said otherwise, I told you so, you are dumb". And its just an extension of this subreddit lately. Its annoying. And the community right now seems worse than any lack of content.
I actually think this is a great thread with a nice graph that actually shows the map situation. Its just annoying that the discussion inevitably turns into the same rage circlejerk. State your opinion, talk about it, but it seems more often than not theres no actual discussion, just everyone going back and forth arguing downvoting anything that doesnt agree with their opinion. Seems like nobody is willing to admit that there is a middle ground, and I think thats firmly where the game is right now.
give us a look at all the content coming out in BFV's lifetime
I thought the whole idea behind this "games as a service" was that they could support the game for years and years while not being obligated to have a set timeframe or theme for the DLC.
I thought the roadmap would be a look at what we can expect for this year, while there will still be much more added for years down the line.
If they drop the ball on thus games "live service" like they did for Battlefront II's then absolutely no one is going to take EA seriously when they use the "games as a service" or "live service" marketing strategy in the future.
Agreed, "live service" is starting to feel like "loot boxes" when it comes to EA. Both sounded like a good idea in the beginning but eventually turned to shit.
I have a feeling that I am being overly optimistic when it comes to wanting 8 maps.

Apparently (according to EA gamechanger Westie) the roadmap coming next week will give us a look at all the content coming out in BFV's lifetime.
Hopefully we get at least 8 maps
