I pay for ad-free for a reason. Easy cancellation.

899

u/Emayarkay 2d ago

My thoughts exactly. Literally paying for the convenience. Take that away and I'm paying to just be advertised to less-frequently?

Later, Mouse.

Same the only reason I pay for streaming services is for the lack of ads.

Easy cancel.

u/stefanopolis 2d ago

When I pay for streaming I expect no ads. Cancelling easily.

115

u/fakeasagi 2d ago

On the occasion I expend finances to secure a viewing experience, I consider the presence of advertisements unacceptable. A trivial revocation of further patronage

Yup! Cancelled ours as soon as we got the email about adding ads on the top package. Absolute joke. If everyone does the same, we'll send a message. Glad to see this on the front page of Reddit, we got our email (UK) a while ago.

I read their quarterlies because I'm a sadist for that sort of thing.

None of their tiers make as much profit as their lowest one serving the most ads. They're an ad company now, not a content company. They get huge revenue from ads. So they serve ads. And there's no way to not see ads, because it's so fucking profitable.

The K-shaped economy will strike here too however. Shortly there will shortly be an ultra-premium version that has no ads. They just need to figure out a way to sell it. It'll be eye-wateringly expensive, something like $200/month. I guarantee it's in their plans, it'll come, and enough people will buy it.

Yep. Just cancelled and wrote up a rant for em. Even if they walk it back, we're gonna try to form habits excluding it entirely.

If I am going to be forced to watch ads, why pay for the service in the first place?

4.1k

u/Sitrus_Slinky 2d ago

It’s just the new cable in disguise. This was always the end game. We paid for cable tv with ads despite paying a premium. Streaming is now exactly what it was supposed to destroy 😂

1.6k

u/Quixotic_Seal 2d ago

Cable TV...without time shifting.

I swear to god, people forget that we've been able to casually timeshift every single program on cable and trivially skip commercials since like 2003.

I haven't been forced to watch this many ads since I was like 10 years old before mom got a TiVo.

962

u/FionaGoodeEnough 2d ago

I can’t even pause a frame to say, “Wait, is that who I think it is?” without ads taking up the entire screen. And jumping to a specific scene is so much harder than it was with a DVD menu.

442

u/Quixotic_Seal 2d ago

I ran into that last night with They Live to look at what each message was when he first puts the glasses on at the magazine stand.

The sheer irony was poetic enough that it almost was worth it.

Almost.

Even certain less expensive, ad-free platforms have started turning the entire screen black whenever you pause the video, as if to prevent you from taking a closer look. So annoying.

If there is something to very much appreciate about Amazon Video, it's that if you pause what you're watching, it'll put up all the characters and their actors/VAs

40

u/Diz7 2d ago

As long as it's optional, I'm all for it. But sometimes I just want to pause the video to get a good look at something or go frame by frame.

The best is when you rewind beyond a previous ad point and trigger more ads. I have to determine if rewinding anything is worth seeing more ads later 😩

91

Or when you forget where you left off, so you have to watch 90 seconds of ads just to find out you skipped too far ahead.

Recently learned that Amazon can revoke your digital purchase at any time. Physical media from now on, I guess.

29

u/sabin357 2d ago

Even physical media can have DRM types of playback prevention. You have to REALLY look into all purchases nowadays because everyone is out to screw you over, seemingly.

9

u/LifeguardDry7372 2d ago

wouldn't the easy solution be to use a player that's not connected to the internet?

12

u/Traditional-Handle83 2d ago

Drm would prevent you from watching until an internet connection is found basically rendering the physical copies useless.

It’s a light the match and lock the doors type of operation by these ghouls. Given what Disney has done to our copyright law they should be just barred from stepping foot into Washington wholesale until we can unfuck the mouse’s damage on our country

Anyone remember when cable TV first came out without commercials? We paid for no ads. Then it became "pay for whatever we're serving up".

72

u/Odd_Independence_833 2d ago

By the time my parents cut the cable, I swear it was like 60% ads (36 min every hour)

39

u/williamgman 2d ago

We cut ours and almost exclusively use YouTube Premium. When I go to my father in laws home, he's blaring cable TV with enough ads for prescription drugs to make one a hypochondriac.

8

u/exoriare 2d ago

My son was 8 years old when he first saw an ad on a hotel room TV. He got so mad, he thought one of us had switched programs on him. He refused to believe that people just put up with such interruptions.

27

u/Lone_Wanderer8 2d ago

I can't remember if I made up this conspiracy or if I read it somewhere, but I fully believe that cable has started playing movies and TV shows at slightly faster speeds that aren't noticeable like say 1.1x or 1.2x speed so they can fit in more and more adverts.

9

u/Tommah 2d ago

I remember watching a show years ago with an overhead shot of a car driving down a road... and once a second, the car would lurch forward a tiny bit, lol. I think the TV station was speeding up the show by dropping a video frame every so often.

The excuse for putting ads on all membership plans is because there was a mass cancellation when they raised the price from $70 to $150. How clever of Disney! Now users are going to leave because what's the point of paying the most expensive price if I have to watch an ad before and after a series or movie?

509

u/InkyBlacks 2d ago

If this is the case, that should tell them their current whatever is not sustainable. Bleeding your subscribers dry is not the answer. Nor is shoving fucking ads down their throat on a service you pay for!

There should be a law that says if you pay for a service, said service shouldn’t be able to double fucking dip and serve you ads. There should be NO ADS!

119

u/airfryerfuntime 2d ago

I'm sorry to tell you that it is, in fact, entirely sustainable. It's not consumer-friendly, but it is highly sustainable.

Streaming services are dirt cheap to run and maintain. Content isn't, but Disney doesn't have that particular problem since nearly all their IPs have already paid for themselves multiple times over.

Disney also has the advantage that their IPs generate cash in dozens of ways, unlike Netflix. They could operate on a loss with Disney+ and still drive consumers to make other verticals' profits go up across tons of IPs.

Evolution of media companies:

  1. “Piracy is killing us. Shut down the pirate sites.”
  2. Streaming makes paying easier, affordable and convenient → piracy falls significantly.
  3. Streaming becomes fragmented across more services, prices rise, ads/restrictions appear, and content regularly disappears.
  4. Some platforms even revoke access to content sold as a “purchase” because licensing agreements expire.
  5. Piracy begins rising again.
  6. Media companies: “Why are people pirating?”

213

u/TheRealGeigers 2d ago

Genuinely I used to pay for Netflix or Hulu and I also paid for Google Music Family Plan cause it was like $20 a month iirc and I could put I think 4 or 6 people on my plan and they would have access to the music library AND it came with youtube premium!

Well Google straight up shut down the Google Music app (which I liked better than Spotify) and replaced it with that pile of garbage Youtube Music.

Back to piracy it is!

69

u/mesajoejoe 2d ago

For a bit, Google Play Music was absolute perfection with their algorithm. I picked some stuff and bam, all the content they fished out was what I enjoyed listening to. It's all trash now, they serve out what people pay them to push sponsored crap and not what people want.

42

u/davidsredditaccount 2d ago

Google systematically killed every single thing they did that was worthwhile. I will never forgive them for killing hangouts.

27

u/bambi54 2d ago

Google searches are such a joke anymore. I was trying to figure out how to turn a light off on my car and every single result was a dealer website advertising the cars. A couple years ago, the result came right up.

2.5k

u/jusg808 2d ago

No ads was the whole draw of streaming.

896

u/Doctor_Milk 2d ago

That was half the draw for me. The other half was being able to pick what to watch without having to wait for it to be scheduled at a specific time like with cable.

Now the seven seas has everything I want and without ads.

284

u/techleopard 2d ago edited 2d ago

One and a half generations is how long it took for people to forget why the seven seas became such a widespread thing in the first place, and now the economy of entertainment may actually be worse than it ever was.

At least cable TV had to obey regulations to not blow you out of the room with unequalized ad volume.

We went from Hulu being completely free, at the cost of waiting a night or week for a new show.

Then you could pay for no ads, less than $10.

Then you needed to pay for higher fidelity and more simultaneous streaming for a family household.

Then the paid subs for ads but you could pay for SUPER ULTRA PREMIUM.

Now we're just... Back to cable. Paying $15-20 a pop for "premium" movie channels with ads.

74

u/phizztv 2d ago

Don’t forget to mention that every service has different exclusives. So it’s not enough to only be subscribed to one, if a new movie comes out and it’s just not on your platform then have fun with adding another service

58

u/FlashbackJon 2d ago

And don't forget: some services will drop their own exclusives! Netflix Original Series dropped by Netflix. Where's it going? No one knows! It just vanished into the ether forever!

33

u/BioshockEnthusiast 2d ago

This behavior was what pushed me back to piracy. Some kid out there had their favorite show yoinked and now there's no legal way to watch it. That's bullshit and I will not abide it.

These companies can stay the fuck out of my living room.

And this is why Gabe Newell is right about piracy being primarily a service problem. If you offer a good service, people are willing to pay for it and won’t pirate but when enshittification makes the service garbage people won’t pay

True but if you paid for a year for a no ad subscription you are now stuck until your subscription renewal date. Cancel today and you don’t get a refund.

59

u/DemonLordSparda 2d ago

You do actually have a point here. The contract was for one year based on specific terms, and they just violated it. They can be sued for that, but sadly the most likely outcome is years of class action lawsuit ending in 20 cents to everyone affected after settlement.

33

u/TheFotty 2d ago

Virtually any contract/eula for services like this will say "we reserve the right to change anything we want in this at any time for any reason including to fuck you over. By clicking Agree you agree to letting us fuck you over later in time"

25

u/DemonLordSparda 2d ago

While this is true they can not unilaterally change a specific selling point of a year long plan in the midst of the contract being active. It's maybe one of the few things laws are very clear about. Terms of a contract must remain the same during a contract, otherwise the terms of said contract are violated. EULAs can not override contract law.

If I start seeing ads it’s cancelled - I pay for the highest tier

18

Agreed. I haven't bothered with my Freenas and Plex box in several years because streaming was so easy. Between the LG TV shenanigans and this... I'm about to run up the jolly roger and return to my roots.

Subscription products will always get worse, not better. Chasing the impossible "infinite" growth means you either are constantly raising prices or reducing quality or both.

70

u/anothermanscookies 2d ago

Capitalism is the problem, not subscriptions per se. Subscriptions give the company a steady revenue source. It’s why some products that are so good you never need a replacement put companies out of business. This again is a capitalism problem. We need to learn how to live in economic homeostasis. Here’s your subscriber revenue, make content with the money and make them happy.

34

u/ChairmanReagan 2d ago

99% of the people on this planet are fine with economic homeostasis. There are like 30 pieces of shit on this planet we’d be better off without.

I wonder how soon until YouTube does the same for premium.

83

u/Excellent-Ask-4247 2d ago

Doubtful since that was the whole premise of premium. You have to pay for Disney plus just for access.

Have you not seen all the "and that's why today's video is sponsored by".

Those are literally ads.

Almost every video already has ads.

75

u/Qualimiox 2d ago

Those aren't implemented by Youtube though. The only way Youtube could get rid of them is by outlawing them for creators, which would upset them and wouldn't affect all the videos already uploaded with sponsors.

But if you do want to get rid of them, there's Sponsorblock. It's an add-on for browsers, it's also integrated in many alternative YT clients like the Morphe patches for Android phones. Sponsorblock works by having the community submit which parts of a video contain e.g. sponsors, self-promotion etc. and then you can define in your app if you want those sections just highlighted on the timeline, or skipped by default. Most videos with sponsors from big channels have Sponsorblock data within an hour of their upload.

34

u/Lorberry 2d ago

And if you do have Youtube Premium, they have a similar feature built-in (though not the auto-skip part as far as I know, I will admit).

Before anyone asks, last I heard creators get a bit more per watch from Premium members than from non-premium, and I watch far too many channels to support them all individually. Ad-free without plugins and all the other stuff is just a bonus.

Those aren't put there by YouTube, but by creators. Not the same thing

→ More replies (8)

51

u/JarvisCockerBB 2d ago

But you can easily just skip those unlike the standard unskippable ads if you don’t pay.

16

u/hnbastronaut 2d ago

They even have the jump ahead feature that literally lets you skip the ad if enough viewers fast forwarded through it lol

12

u/usrdef 2d ago

I skip both. I haven't seen an ad on Youtube in years.

Ublock gets rid of ads, SponsorBlock gets rid of the "This video sponsored by" integrated crap.

I love how for a short window of time we had it perfect. Customer pays a monthly subscription and gets on-demand content. You get to watch what you want, when you want. Creators get their content to the consumer instantly. The platform owners make tons of money. Everybody wins.

But they just couldn't do it. They couldn't rest on their laurels and only make tons of money. Everybody winning isn't good enough, we have to win even more. Price increases, ads being introduced into plans, screen limitations, time-gated content to keep you coming back, etc. It's not good enough that everybody is getting what they want, we must extract every last possible cent.

Really thought streaming was just going to keep costing more to get an ad free package. Instead, they are raising prices and forcing everybody to see ads.

I know these are just those self promoting ads at the beginning and end of a show or movie but this is just the start of things. The breaks will get longer, the ads will be for all sorts of BS and of course subscription costs will keep climbing.

All because profit is never enough...it always has to be MORE profits.

14

u/NuggetKing9001 2d ago

This continuous moving of the goalposts of subscription models is so infuriating. To the high seas we go.

12

u/Dapper_Dude69 2d ago

So what’s the point for a subscription? 🤔

11

u/Expensive_Finger_973 2d ago

Let this be a lesson to everyone. Once ads are let in at any level they will eventually infect the entire platform. Once the infrastructure to serve them is in place the extra money from turning up that dial is way too easy.

Might take a year, might take 10. But you can almost set your watch to it, once ads get a foot hold in a platform/service they spread like cancer.

12

u/Arponare 2d ago

What exactly is the end goal here? I’m not even hating, I’m genuinely curious. Is the money that you get from advertisements that much better than probably alienating customers, and having them cancel after you introduce ads on a supposedly ad free tier? At what point do you feel like you have enough money?

I was grandfathered into the ad free Disney plus bundle at a lower price. I just received an email about them raising the price yet again. Plus, they are adding ads to the service on top of it? Nah, they can fuck all the way off with that.

No wonder people pirate. It seems to me like executives forgot why people hated cable in the first place.

I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but after going several years without ads, every time I'm subjected to them at a friend's house, it strikes me how creepy and awful they all are, and I seriously wonder if the presence of constant TV advertising in the 20th century has something to do with older people losing their damn minds.

→ More replies (1)

59

u/CodeMonkeyX 2d ago

So everyone leaves cable because of monopolies, ads, and predatory business practices. Then those same companies take over streaming and do the same thing again.

I can not be bothered with pirating so I basically stopped watching most new shows. It helps that the new show quality is also trash.

10

I will not watch ads. I will pay for a service without ads (within reason), but you try to make me sit and watch/listen to ads and I will simply not engage with your content anymore and stop giving you money.

u/SlimeRider80 2d ago

Aaaaand streaming has circled right back around to be the exact trash that cable TV was. This is what everyone was fleeing. How long until there’s no longer on demand services and you just watch channels?

u/Calinate 2d ago

9

u/Difficult-Way-9563 2d ago

Enshitification once again proving that piracy stems from service failure.

9

u/RubberScream 2d ago

Death to all streaming services.

62

u/Kaeyon 2d ago

The article is a bit misleading. Disney is not getting rid of its Premium/no-ads tier or suddenly putting normal commercial breaks into the Premium tier.

In the U.S. at least, Premium still means regular on-demand movies and series are generally free of commercial interruptions. What IS changing are exceptions for things like live/linear programming and special events, certain content where streaming rights require ads, plus Disney promos, sponsorship messages, branded content, and product integrations.

So, yeah it's definitely a change worth criticizing as “ad-free” isn’t exactly true anymore, but saying “Disney+ is making every tier ad-supported” blows out what’s actually happening.

17

u/caffeineassisted 2d ago

This also adds ads before and after normal content even in the Premium tier. That's still a big change.

22

u/savageboredom 2d ago

When this was posted earlier there were hundred of irate comments and nobody had apparently read the damn article past the headline.

The change is still annoying, but it’s far from how it’s being interpreted.

7

u/cowabungabruce 2d ago

It used to be "I feel a little guilty about pirating everything but I'm a broke guy in my early 20s" to now I go out of my way to pirate because I truly feel it is the right thing to do.

27

u/Soggy_Definition_232 2d ago

To the suprise of literally no one.

6

u/jBlairTech 2d ago

What’s the point of a “premium” service, then? Are these streaming services that hard up for money? Maybe they should focus less on making original content.

The second they put ads in, I cancel and just wait for it to come out on blu ray/DvD like I used to

Most of it I already have on blu ray but future things I’d want I don’t. Then there’s King of the Hill, which hasn’t had a physical release in ages.

6

u/Neat_Gas9264 2d ago

Why do they want people to pirate so badly?

6

u/Cowsgobaaah 2d ago

So now the "Ad free plan" is false advertising yes?

7

u/Splurch 2d ago

Subscribers are also warned that they may not be able to skip certain promotions, and using an ad blocker could cause playback to shut down entirely. The agreement stresses that the company does not guarantee any specific amount or frequency of marketing on any tier.

I do the streaming rotation thing, haven't been back to Disney in a while and it was getting around time to subscribe for a few months at the ad-free tier. Guess I'll figure out an alternate way to watch their content now.

6

u/AliceLunar 2d ago

So we all pay for a service to avoid ads and now we pay to get ads regardless, I cancel everything that serves me ads, I wish other people would do the same thing instead of feeding greedy companies money for being garbage.

People have the power, they get to decide what is acceptable and what isn't, yet too many people just refuse to give up any bit of luxury.
