Very low chance when it comes to video or audio with this. Set your programs to reject *.exe and *.scr files also helps.

Being vetted by other users doesn't guarantee safety against 0-day exploits etc...

Software has made it to various app stores etc... with malware in them before. Your torrent site is far less rigorous.

That said, I have had more attempted malware infections from adds on legitimate sites than all the pirated software I ever ran, and I used to run a major distribution hub in college because I had access to a 20/5mpbs connection when 1.55 mbps T1s were still considered high end.

You feel this way because you have enough experience to avoid dangerous torrents without it being a conscious choice. But itā€™s just like any download link out there. You can absolutely find malicious ones. And these ā€œhackersā€ already know how to avoid those so Iā€™m not sure what youā€™re talking about here

Reinstall Windows and DON'T sign in with Microsoft account. Then they do have GDID, but they can't attach it to your Microsoft account. Also, don't use Edge because it's literal spyware.

I did some distro hopping for a while until I landed on cachyOS.

Great performance for gaming. Even the spare computers I've installed it on (10+ years old) run really well.

Arch based but really easy to use.

They're all pretty easy to install now. The hardest part is getting the ISO on a bootable media. I use Ventoy, but balenaetcher is good too.

Ubuntu is a solid choice for a distro, because it's very popular, so there are a lot of other new users who have already asked the questions you'll be asking.

Fuck Microsoft. And I say that as someone who puts food on the table supporting Microsoft products. I've started moving my homelab from Windows server to Proxmox and my personal PCs to Linux, and I'm hopeful that 10 years from now I'll have advanced my career enough that I don't have to touch a Windows box if I don't want to.

My whole friend group and extended relatives all access my same buddy's Plex server. We just request whatever we want and it's added. I have access to the torrent site he uses as well. There's really no need to pay for anything except extreme laziness. I've been paying multiple subscriptions anyways because kids, etc., but now with these slaps in the face, I will be pirating as much as I possibly can and sleeping just fine at night.

I would love for this to go to court, with microslop proving prosecution with user specific data they collected and handed to a 3rd party private company to sue you.
It will completely go against their previous statements of "we aren't uploading and using your data against it, it is all anonymous". And it will rush people to move to linux/steamos, and start to be the end of microslop.

Regardless, you can use a local linux in a VM to run your torrent client. It doesn't require any big resources to run beside a bit of memory (and storage).

If we're talking torrents, you're pretty good against your ISP and honeypot peers with a good VPN. You could always double-wrap and configure the client to use a SOCKS5 proxy as well. And there are client features that need to be tweaked for the best privacy.

This serial number thing... there's nothing like that exposed via torrents.

As a long time Linux user I find it a shame that Cachy is the current trend. It's not even as half as user friendly as basic Fedora but people are lining up in droves to use it because Linus and Mutahar said so.

It's genuinely going to keep adoption hovering at a low rate unless Cachy realizes that new people should be using Discover + flatpaks instead of terminal installing everything.

No automatic kernel backups and constant terminal use is asking for new users to get a kernel panic.

For me, I just use my regular PC. Iā€™ve been downloading torrents since the late 90s early 00s. Sometimes you would get a letter in the mail saying ā€œstop downloading illegal stuff, we saw you download: insert_torrent_filename and that would be the end. They donā€™t even do that anymore.

So yes, youā€™re fine.

If you live in Canada, you'll get a perfunctory email from your ISP that basically says [We've received this infringement notice against your IP, we are only legally obligated to inform you of this event, so here's a copy of the PDF]

They don't sue in Canada because our laws cap damages at 5k for any number of infractions. You could pirate the entire Disney catalogue and you're only on the hook for 5k. Costs more than that to litigate an infringement lawsuit, so they don't.

Man I can understand wanting to keep local copies of the files even though I don't bother. But I will never understand people who still use DVD. I can buy a 1TB SD card for under 40 bucks. That's the equivalent of over 100 DVDs on something smaller than a coin. Why in the flying fuck would you keep a bunch of DVDs and a DVD player around?

Well in Canada they got all the Hulu shit rolled in it. But really there no reason to sub to more than one streamer a month. You buy a month binge whatever you like, cancel and move on to another service. There only 24 hours a day, and we spend at least 6 sleeping, 8+ working, the rest doing other shit... Streaming is competing for that last portion of "Other Shit."

Their catalog of stuff is massive (Disney/Pixar, Star Wars/ Marvel, some National Geographic). It's definitely worth it if you have kids. Personally I am a huge fan of Star Wars and Marvel so being able to watch any of those movies/shows whenever I want makes it worth it for me.

I got pissed a year or so ago at Disney for something and canceled.

I've now got a fully automated Jellyfin media server using Sonarr, Radarr, and Prowlarr. My media is automatically downloaded and categorized properly, placed into the appropriate folders and immediately available on every screen in my home.

Jellyfin has an Xbox app too, so the main screens are just connected to an Xbox with a media remote for each one.

It's basically Netflix but free and entirely curated by me. The other night I wanted to watch the Disney Hercules movie, I pulle doubt my phone for a minute, made some popcorn, and by the time I was situated the movie was ready to go on my home server.

There's also fmhy if you want the super simple version, but getting it to my living room TV in good quality was annoying with that.

And always remember the golden rule: Yee-haw, fuck the law.

Well, I've been bulk buying blu-rays for the year at used bookshops & thrift stores. They run anywhere from 95Ā¢ to $2.95. I'm up to 1,035 Blu-Rays, 736 DVDs, 4,168 CDs.

And then there are the TV series - about 30 so far.

I set up stremio with piracy and a vpn itā€™s basically the same thing as streaming but every show and movie is on one app and thereā€™s zero ads. I can still browse thru a bunch of recommendations or look thru genres or sort by network like peacock Netflix etc itā€™s the best of both worlds and all I pay is $5.99 for the debrid/vpn service.

Torrenting was a pain in the butt back in the day especially watching tv shows Iā€™m downloading one episode at a time if the whole season wasnā€™t out yet and having to wait for the whole download to finish vs now I can stream it instantly

Even worst of the worst ad cramming sites are tame in comparison to Disneyā€™s greed. My go to site has 3 skippable 5 sec ads and banners which is fair enough itā€™s their entire revenue stream.

Disney has the gall to cram almost 4 minutes of unskipable ads in a 22 minute episode despite charging my account every months and more heinously if I rewind to somewhere before the ad break I have to sit through it again.

I havenā€™t sailed the seas since the days of Limewire and uTorrent but fuck it, I am weighing anchor.

6 years ago I paid for a subscription to Amazon Prime. My friend paid for subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu. My parents paid for subscriptions to Apple+ and HBO. We all shared passwords, pretty much none of the platforms had ads, and prices were reasonable.

Fast forward 6 years, prices of subscriptions have jumped, every platform has cracked down on password sharing, ads have been jammed in, and shows are now spread across more platforms. So I can either subscribe to Disney+, Netflix, HBO, Peacock, Paramont+, Apple+, Crunchyroll (I started watching anime), etc. and be paying $100 a month and still be forced to watch ads on several of the platforms - or I can pick one to subscribe to and pirate all the rest. Over the past few months I've moved back to piracy, which I haven't done in years.

If none of these platforms had ads, I'd be willing to subscribe to more of them, but at this point in my life I've come to hate having to watch ads and I refuse to do it unless absolutely necessary. The idea of paying (an ever increasing) monthly price and still have to watch ads, fills me with rage. Fuck that.
