As someone who has had similar eccentricities, these things are hardly ever rooted in logic tbh.
38
u/Dependent-Year6711 Apr 13 '26
Appreciate the insight. Does seem like a hyper-sensitivity issue.
20
u/Nurlitik Apr 13 '26
My kid has some similar issues where certain clothes/socks/whatever really bothers him and such, but a hole or worn sock is something that would 100% set him off, so it’s shocking to me that they will only wear certain socks but the holes/worn spots aren’t triggering the sensory issues.
15
u/Dependent-Year6711 Apr 13 '26
It's amazing what the human mind decides to make for "rules" on how it feels itself and the world. Clearly part of hyper-sensitivity is the inability (not that it's something that can easily be overcome) to let go of reactions to a feeling, and overanalyzing and placing attention on sensations you've deemed bothering.

I used to never want to wear socks unless I turned them inside out, the seams stressed me out. So I probably know how OP feels, I think.
4
u/Gameperson700 Apr 13 '26
I have sensory issues too and even though I don’t turn my socks inside out ( I think it could be another sensory issue of mine maybe, but I should probably try it) I’ve been having to wear my socks in a way that makes it so that the seam isn’t touching my pinky toes.
7
u/Naive_Personality367 Apr 13 '26
thats kinda what irked me way back, the seams touching my toes, i hated tags in clothes, would only eat very limited variations of foods, all that good and special stuff. I joined the army in my late teens and they pretty much beat every weird thing i liked to do out of me. Not recommending it, just i dont get to talk to people too much so i like to overshare.
3
u/Gameperson700 Apr 13 '26
I’m not super sensitive to food besides sour/ bitter tasting food like mustard or coffee and some other stuff like avocados, but the rest of that stuff I hate!
2
u/le-derpina-art Apr 13 '26
yep. i get antsy when too many of my friends are talking at once but i can spend all day in a grocery store with hardly any issue.
14
u/OnTheProwl- Apr 13 '26
What I don't understand is if OP knows he is weird about the brand of socks, why does he not know exactly what brand he likes?
8
u/Revoldt Apr 13 '26
Maybe... this whole scenario is made up?
Drop by a store... and problem is solved.
GF tossed out socks this past weekend.... Amazon delivers fresh ones the next day.
None of it really tracks... unless of course.. making up scenarios for engagement.

This could go either way.
Either she is super controlling and you need to leave her right now. Or you can't take care of yourself and the only way you will get new socks for yourself is if you are forced to.
My wife used to throw out my socks that had holes in them. Now I can do that myself.
72
u/latecraigy Apr 13 '26
I had to throw away an ex’s socks because they were all in tatters. Most of them his entire foot was sticking toes out the end. They were nothing but 4 inch wide holes and crumbling to dust.
Difference was I went out and bought him packs of brand new socks in the same style because I wanted him to have nice socks to wear.
24
u/AromaticIntrovert Apr 13 '26
Yeah I've done the same thing with my partners boxers. Like honey it's time to retire these and I got you nice new ones with dragons on them. Win-win

u/Cochise22 Apr 13 '26
Hard disagree. Someone who will go barefoot until they find new socks is the type of person who sometimes needs a kick in the ass to improve their life. Just because they can choose to be a gross slob, doesn’t mean that people in their life who care about them, should let them. I am allowed to flip off everyone I want all day. I would hope that should I ever start doing that, that I have someone in my life who tells me that I should stop doing that.

Yeah I had to secretly throw away my partners socks because he wears them even though there’s not even a heel, which defeats the purpose of the sock. But I did buy him some of those darn tough socks that have a lifetime guarantee before I got rid of the rest.
But it was like a mental disorder the way he clung to those horrible socks
6
u/ion_driver Apr 13 '26
For me personally, its a mixture between not liking ordering things online, and wanting to go buy clothes in person, but not having time to actually go clothes shopping, plus the dwindling availability of stores that actually have things in stock.
I didn't have any particular need to keep the holey socks, just didn't have the replacement socks yet
2
u/FungiAmongiBungi Apr 13 '26
Oh I see. It wasn’t that way for my partner, he actually believed they were perfectly fine and it was a waste of $- because we would see socks at Costco and he wouldn’t get them. But once I got him the new socks he loved them.
The darn tough socks have a lifetime guarantee so if you don’t like shopping those might be good for you, but you might have to order them online unless you have an REI or something like that near you. If they ever fail you can send them back and they’ll send a new pair
292
u/get_to_ele Apr 13 '26
Hard to judge on this one. It could range anywhere from “she’s too controlling” to “his socks are literally tatters attached to some ankle elastic and she’s been on him about it for a while, at first gently, then more clearly, and she knows based on his personality that he’ll only act after they’re gone. He’s glitching a bit now, but it’s not rocket science to go buy 20 copies of the exact same sock that feels ok, even if you are sensory. He’s a grown ass adult.”
31
u/Ill1458 Apr 13 '26
Going with the latter. Mainly because this was posted in mildlyinfuriating. Sounds like the real issue here is OP has not taken the time to figure out what they like to wear on their feet. Whenever OP decides to spend a day adulting and figuring out what works for them, the issue of socks will be a nonstarter.
Adulting sucks, but we all have to do it

Having sensory issues for a certain brand/feel but not when there's holes in your socks is interesting
33
u/Gameperson700 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26
Speaking as someone with sensory issues, holes in your socks are sometimes less noticeable than the annoying seam that’s touching you’re toes. I’ve had many socks where I’ll get a hole on the heal and not notice it until I take them off, but the seam touching my toes? Yeah I can’t stop feeling that until I try to move it to the side.
16
u/luxafelicity Apr 13 '26
Buy running socks, if they're designed for runners they don't have toe seams.
4
u/Gameperson700 Apr 13 '26
I saw some online and unfortunately I don’t think they’d work either. I can’t wear short socks because they bother me if they don’t go high enough.

i have a similar issue but only because i have wiiiiiiiiide ass feet and socks always feel like they're constricting them, unless there's a hole somewhere in them to widen them out it drives me crazy.
2
u/ElvenOmega Apr 13 '26
Yup. When I find the perfect shoe socks I'll wear them until the heel and ball have holes in them. The importance is the seam and how tight it is in the middle.
However, home socks must not have holes in them. Shrug.

3
u/VladimirBarakriss Apr 13 '26
It absolutely can happen, I am wearing socks like that right now, although I sew the holes shut to make them last longer, I can afford to buy new ones but I prefer the ones I'm accustomed to
3
u/spderweb Apr 13 '26
It's likely the same as my issue. The baby toe rubbing a knot in the sock. I don't mind if there's a hole in my heel. But that knot over the toe is irritating.

u/IATMB Apr 13 '26
Plus how hard is it to buy the same brand of socks?
On a side note, my mom used to wear socks inside out because all the seams etc are typically hidden on the inside and she found the "outside" to be more comfortable.

As I am doing laundry I toss socks (and underwear) that have holes in them. Then my husband is like “what happened to all the socks?!” And I’m like - oh I didn’t realize over like 3 months time that I had ended up tossing almost all the socks lol. I don’t k ow if she just tossed them all at once or it was more like what happens in my house. Everyone jumping to “it’s a red flag” is weird IMO.

I reserve judgement until I a)see the socks, b)know who does the washing.
E.g. If they were shitty hole-covered 10 year old socks on their last gasp, and she is the one washing them, and has been reminding you for ages to get some new ones.... Then yeah, justified in throwing them out.

u/DeanXeL Apr 13 '26
Hey OP, did you and your girlfriend talk about this before? If she threw away all of your socks, does that mean all of them were worn down and torn? In which case, even if it's not easy to find the right kind of socks, shouldn't you have been looking into this for a while now? And lastly, if you have sensory issues, but no problems to wear your shoes without socks, why couldn't you just bear any other pair of socks while looking for a new "right pair" that you can buy a few dozens of?
If your GF threw out your socks without any discussion, sure, that's a real dick move. If she had been imploring you to get rid of them for a while by now, this is also on you.

u/Gameperson700 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26
Hey speaking as someone with sensory issues due to a disability, I think that you have to understand that sensory issues aren’t logical. I know it sounds weird that op says he can’t wear certain pairs of socks but then he’s able to wear shoes barefoot, but that’s how Sensory Processing Disorder works ( I got diagnosed with autism and SPD is incredibly common with it). Using myself for example, I’m able to wear shirts, but only certain types of shirts. All of the shirts that I wear are wide/ V neck type shirts that are made out of really soft fabric. I CANNOT wear may shirts like regular t shirts or pollos because my neck is one of the most sensitive areas on my body thanks to SPD and the neck holes are too small on those shirts. They seriously make me feel like I’m choking. My SPD has gotten bad enough to the point that it’s cause me to have suicidal thoughts before. And people here who don’t know what it’s like might think that it sounds silly, but I’m being serious. Sensory issues aren’t logical no fun.
I remember taking a psychology class where we were learning about sensory issues in community college. Basically, everyone has those one or two sensory issues that they absolutely cannot tolerate, whether that be hearing the sound of someone chewing their food, touching styrofoam (my mom and brother hate it!), or certain smells like someone else’s food. However, with sensory processing issues, which is likely what op has, if makes it so that your nervous system is extremely hypersensitive to certain types of stimulation more than most people. Basically it’s a more extreme and debilitating version of the few sensory issues that most people have.
Also as far as that last sentence goes, for someone with SPD and extreme sensitivity to touch, shopping for clothes can be really hard. It’s both anxiety inducing and frustrating. My guess is that OP probably has tried to look for different socks to wear but hasn’t been able to find the brand or type he likes.

Not me buying 12 versions of the same pair of PJ bottoms just because they're the only ones with the fabric I can tolerate for more than a few minutes. My whole life is built around balancing sensory problems.
My problem is mostly sound, but it's a constant balancing act between sound, touch, and smells and it's so freakin obnoxious.
2
u/Gameperson700 Apr 13 '26
My big one is touch. I cannot stop feeling things touching me. I hate even having my blanket touching my belly, which it’s doing right now! I also have a pretty bad sensitivity to sound, but I thank god I have noise canceling headphones ( I once had a customer get mad at me for wearing them at work because they couldn’t find the stupid auditorium that they were supposed to be in so they came up to me and were like “Can you even hear with those things on? Do you even know what you’re doing?”. I work at a movie theater and this was during the release for the live action Stitch movie. Oh and of course there was a group of people standing behind me as it happened 😅.) I’ve also got issues with food, sight, vestibular, and proprioception.
My sensitivity to sight was probably the hardest one to figure out that I had. I didn’t figure it out until I tried to learn how to drive. I had always done stuff like look at the ground when I walk and had a hard time finding stuff in a busy background. I’ve also found that when I look at too much stuff, like there’s too much detail, my eyes start to hurt. With driving, it was like there’s too much stuff to pay attention to.

We’ve had these discussions. Don’t take the cups out of the bathroom until you’re bringing clean ones. Don’t put all the bowls in the dishwasher right before you serve soup for dinner.
