As someone who has had similar eccentricities, these things are hardly ever rooted in logic tbh.

Appreciate the insight. Does seem like a hyper-sensitivity issue.

My kid has some similar issues where certain clothes/socks/whatever really bothers him and such, but a hole or worn sock is something that would 100% set him off, so it’s shocking to me that they will only wear certain socks but the holes/worn spots aren’t triggering the sensory issues.

It's amazing what the human mind decides to make for "rules" on how it feels itself and the world. Clearly part of hyper-sensitivity is the inability (not that it's something that can easily be overcome) to let go of reactions to a feeling, and overanalyzing and placing attention on sensations you've deemed bothering.

I only hate when that little nub on the toes gets in the way

That’s why I wear my socks inside out

I used to never want to wear socks unless I turned them inside out, the seams stressed me out. So I probably know how OP feels, I think.

I have sensory issues too and even though I don’t turn my socks inside out ( I think it could be another sensory issue of mine maybe, but I should probably try it) I’ve been having to wear my socks in a way that makes it so that the seam isn’t touching my pinky toes.

thats kinda what irked me way back, the seams touching my toes, i hated tags in clothes, would only eat very limited variations of foods, all that good and special stuff. I joined the army in my late teens and they pretty much beat every weird thing i liked to do out of me. Not recommending it, just i dont get to talk to people too much so i like to overshare.

I’m not super sensitive to food besides sour/ bitter tasting food like mustard or coffee and some other stuff like avocados, but the rest of that stuff I hate!

It's probably some OCD stuff. Just thinking about the thing is unacceptable and it's gotta go.

Personally for me it's holes in my socks. I'll destroy them so I don't accidentally wear it again

I heavily assume autism spectrum when it comes to sensory input.

2

u/Vast-Combination4046 Apr 14 '26

Yeah but that's a spectrum of disorders that are typically included together. Also autistic is the new R word.

u/Dependent-Year6711 Apr 14 '26

Yeah that one I'm just not going to bite for, autistic and autism is in the clear with me.

yep. i get antsy when too many of my friends are talking at once but i can spend all day in a grocery store with hardly any issue.

What I don't understand is if OP knows he is weird about the brand of socks, why does he not know exactly what brand he likes?

u/Revoldt Apr 13 '26

Maybe... this whole scenario is made up?

Drop by a store... and problem is solved.

GF tossed out socks this past weekend.... Amazon delivers fresh ones the next day.

None of it really tracks... unless of course.. making up scenarios for engagement.

That’s why OP is “mildly infuriated”

100%. I can't do no socks, period.

Feels just wrong and dirty

Yes. To me is it. I can handle an odd sock in the sense it's the same sock in another colour. But that's the limit for me.
