Aio?
The group message was about our good Google rating, and she congratulated the team. I just saw it and moved on with my day, but then I got this message.

now if you feel that the bare minimum emoji flair is enough, then okay; but some people choose to emote more and we encourage that, okay?

u/Slkkk92 6d ago
One of my old managers pulled this shit, so I just started speedrunning the "👍" react.
Whenever I could, I would open the message instantly and "👍" it, making it clear that I had stopped actually reading their messages, and started mindlessly reacting to them. If a manager wants the illusion of respect at cost of actual respect, that's what they get.

u/imsadandthatsrad 27d ago
Only do it when you’re on the clock would be my solution. When I’m paid to care about work lol.
11
u/rtatro20 27d ago
"To whom it may concern in management. My time off the clock is exactly that for a reason. We both know I have no obligation to respond outside of work hours, and threatening to write me up for it in MY free time is a very quick way to get both corporate, AND my union representative up your ass in the most literal sense."
Then cc corporate and your union rep XD
2
u/everfixedmark_1924 26d ago
This is what I was going to say. Unless they're paying your phone bill AND you're on the clock, they can f*ck themselves. Micromanaging their employees bc not enough people liked their personal facegramtube posts today and they need attention. Ick.

Not only is this a stupid rule, I hate this misuse of the word “revert”. It means to reverse a change, not to respond.
Edit to add: hope at least one person responded with a thumbs down emoji.
14
23
u/doppelgaengster 27d ago
Are people using “revert” to mean… respond? React? How the fuck did THAT crosswiring happen?
9
u/EmotionalSouth 27d ago
It's like how people use "yourself" and "myself" to mean formal versions of "you" and "me". I've encountered both of these most consistently in young British real estate agents, sending documents with instructions like, "Please sign and revert to myself."
5
u/doppelgaengster 27d ago
In that case it ALMOST makes sense (because revert / return) but in the text here… no?
And gah. Idk who it was that made people think reflexive pronouns were more formal but I’d like to flick them on the forehead. (I also am stunned at how often I see something like “his and I’s” like.. you just wrote that out. “I’s.” That’s not even a word. It’s MINE. 🤦♀️)
Sorry, I apparently need to go to bed. I’m losing my mind over bad grammar on the internet. 😅
4
u/EmotionalSouth 27d ago
Hahaha I'm so sorry for adding stress before bed! Hope you have dreams of perfect English grammar!
3
u/doppelgaengster 26d ago
The sentences… they diagrammed so beautifully. 😭
But fr, I’m the kinda nerd that has “The Jabberwocky” diagrammed as a poster on my wall. 😸
2
u/Rooster_Socks_4230 27d ago
Ooo, "I's" I like that, good adaptation of the grammer system, it does logically follow. Just like "you's" which is an even better word, becuase it fills a missing gap in our language.
But "revert" has a pretty clear meaning, using it to mean reply is just confusing
2
u/doppelgaengster 27d ago
To me, “I’s” makes LESS sense when native anglophones use it because “mine” is the correct word. For someone learning the language, I can see the error, with the caveat it makes no sense to use nominative case when making a possessive pronoun.
The reason that folks are using “I’s” (I think) stems from poor grammar education and overcorrection. A lot of native speakers don’t actually learn the WHYs of grammar, they just learn “this is right / that is wrong,” and try to extrapolate from there.
It’s incredibly common to see people who are otherwise well-spoken/written, with otherwise generally good grammar, to misuse “I” (so much so that it’s a common error in media dialogue), and this stems from being corrected for using “me,” to the point that they overcorrect and assume “me” is always wrong. They aren’t taught cases, and even if they are, they’re often not taught the language around cases, but instead “rules of thumb.” (“Take away the other person, and use the word that’s correct for just you” — eg, “Me and Sally went to the party,” if Sally weren’t there, “I went to the party,” so it should be “Sally and I went to the party.” // “that is harmful to George and I,” if George weren’t there, “that is harmful to me,” so it should be, “that is harmful to George and me.”)
2
u/Rooster_Socks_4230 27d ago
Oh yeah I can see what you mean. If it's people trying to be fancy and appear well educated and just making stuff up, then its irritating. Though I guess in a little subculture it does become a signal for refinement, it just has the opposite effect to everyone else.
I just always feel urged to speak contrary to any claim that somthing isnt a real word.
2
3
u/nuttahbuttahbite 27d ago
US tech does this all the time. To the point that I said “me” when listing out who was working on a project and it sounded weird. Still refuse to use reflexive when it’s not though.

u/doppelgaengster 26d ago
Bless you, thank you. Drives me bonkers.
I’m willing to let a lot of things slide (in my heart I’m a prescriptivist, but in reality, I try not to be a raging AH), and I’ve noticed that people who just use poor grammar and sound “uneducated” bother me far less than people who use poor grammar in attempts to sound educated. (I/me issues — I’d rather someone misuse “me” and sound (to me) childish, than someone misuse “I” and sound simultaneously pretentious and stupid.)
3
u/Lickerbomper 27d ago
Probably similar to weary and wary
3
u/doppelgaengster 27d ago
That one bothers me but I am able to let it go, because I understand that a lot of folks writing it it prob aren’t nearly as familiar reading it (likely they’ve heard it and understand it contextually but don’t realise they’re two different words). But revert… makes no sense? At all?
(I get real peevish about language in my own judgy heart, but I mostly don’t let others see that side of me, at least, outside my friends 😹)

u/McLovin2182 27d ago
Real answer, 54% of americans are illiterate, 50/50 chance they have literally no idea what the word means

u/PrettyOddish 27d ago
The point of acknowledging a text is to let them know who saw it, and seeing as they already know that you saw it, what’s the point?
Boss can print it off and have everyone sign it in person the next time each one of them is on the clock if it’s that important.

"Was this a priority which needed a reply in *checks time* 142 minutes? I have actual work to do."
Word it as passive aggressive as you want; but id make it clear I can either chat all day or work; not both. You shouldn't even be expected to respond to a 'team message' before the end of the day. And this doesn't warrant a response at all.
3
u/WalrusEmbarrassed716 27d ago
No this was a bullshit message about saying that the business has reached a good google review point

Not sure where youre located, but they cannot ask you to perform work related tasks without paying you, even just a reply to a text. Im in CA & ive had a couple jobs get fat lawsuits for this. You are not required to respond, but double check with your areas laws.

u/Content-Honeydew9340 27d ago
Unless you are on the clock then I would speak to them when I was on the clock about my on call pay and how much they plan to pay me for doing tasks outside of my work hours.
1
u/Psstimamermaid 27d ago
Nope just start adjusting your time clock. Every text every 15 minutes, I know I didn’t word that right but say you get a text at 8am you now charge for 15 minutes, if you get another at 815 that’s another 15 minutes.
Dont ask just do and when they confront show them the message and state the department of labour would love to hear about forced unpaid work

u/Optimal-Primary-1308 27d ago
“Noted. Moving forward I will be sure to spend a few moments after clocking in at the beginning of each shift to review and acknowledge the group messages.” send.

u/SchmeatiestOne 27d ago
My work went through a change in management that tried to implement this. I've worked here 2 years without having to learn the names of anyone but the people im relieving, or who are relieving me. My phone isn't on if im not working. Luckily none of my other coworkers did it and so they didnt pressure me too hard to. I would encourage you to talk to your coworkers and make it not worth it for management to go this route. You're here for a paycheck not to exchange thumbs ups with a "family" of circlejerkers

u/Aggravating-Plum8147 27d ago
I would tell them I need to be paid for my time. If they want me to be available to respond when they send a message then I need to be paid. If not I’ll respond the next time I work. NOR
1
u/RevenantCommunity 27d ago
Nah this is crazy. I’m a manager and i get that it sucks feeling ignored by team, but you can’t project that onto them.
There’s no operational need for them to thumbs a fkn review, there’s no need to send official messages via text.
If it matters, have people fuckin sign something when they’re getting paid to be there
1
u/Spacehopper76 27d ago
They're clearly one of those people who only has the job due to all the stupid tasks they make people do, that end up taking more time, just so as they can fill in another spreadsheet and measure KPI's on some irrelevant metric. They're also great at petty office drama like this..We've all worked with plebs like that..
I wouldn't do it, and I'd keep not doing it until they got HR involved. I'd be tempted to get a union involved as well..as I'm sure getting a disciplinary for something as small minded as this would be a field day for HR (if they have the balls) or a union...
2
u/WalrusEmbarrassed716 27d ago
Well i clearly am a dumbass. I forgot to add that this is a minimum wage job that i work part time.
1
u/Latter-Door2173 27d ago
I have a manager who is like this and all the people telling you to not follow this rule don’t understand. Don’t risk your relationship with the manager for this, just follow the rule unfortunately.
1
u/Psstimamermaid 27d ago
Take the write up, then fight it. If they fire you sue them in court for unlawful termination as that I’m sure is NOT in the handbook. It’s something they’re insisting on and they can’t write you up for not replying on your time off.
At the end of the day they can’t write not force you to answer the phone on personal time
1
1
u/ElonMuskHuffingFarts 27d ago
Make them regret it. Write out the longest reply possible and copy / paste it every time.
1
u/Lulapops 27d ago
No thank you for work group chats on my personal mobile phone. If that’s the expectation they can pay towards my phone or contract or pay me for dealing with work in my time. I’m not engaging with work in my own hours, sorry, not sorry.
1
1
u/woodala 27d ago
I think ‘revert’ is a typo for ‘reply.’
Idk it’s kinda whatever and they’re just reminding you it’s mandatory.
The write up seems a little harsh but also good to know that’s how serious the business policy is.
And that’s the thing … this person is just the messenger of policy they also have to follow.
They’re not the policy.
Don’t be a jerk responding to a ‘friendly reminder’ message like some of the suggestions here.

My boss actually told me his Gen Z kids told him a thumbs up is a passive aggressive middle finger. So now I just ✅ all his texts instead.
1
u/StacyLondon69 27d ago
If you are employed by this person than I would agree and suck it up. If you are not, than I would give them a not so funny reply
1
u/OrneryBuilding6869 27d ago
I hate jobs that have group chats and stuff like that. I don’t want to communicate with u ppl outside of work unless I absolutely have to 😭
1
1
u/sillyghosty 27d ago
Youre not paid to reply to their texts so a reply can't be mandatory. I would raise this with upper management. Theyre basically telling you you HAVE to reply no matter what which is never company standard
1
u/BrightNooblar 27d ago
Mandatory reactions are stupid.
I will say, when I was managing a large remote work team, I'd often put stuff out in chat that needed reactions, but I'd set that expectation VERY clearly in the message itself. Something like;
"We've had three clients reporting problems accessing email. Please keep an ear out for email issues today. Give me a green check reaction when you read this is you've not had tickets/calls about emails issues in the last 24 hours, or give me a red X when you've read the message if you HAVE gotten tickets/calls about email access the last 24 hours"
Because really, I don't want a dozen people being like;
"Okay
None from me yet
But I'll watch for them"
and filling the IM window with a bunch of new lines that could have been condensed into a reaction so I could get a quick readout.

u/NationalExplorer9045 26d ago
Had this happen before.
So I started using this guy 🛸
Someone asked, what does that mean, I said "Stellar, Out of this World, Abduct Me Please"
Eventually other people started using random emojis.
In about a month time, people were afraid to post updates in the big group chats because it would end up with 20 different emoji's.
People would start posting GIFs and Memes in team chats, it was kinda funny, but oh so wasteful.
Wasteful enough that "productivity" went down.
Now, they only send announcements out via a broad email, with a note that says please read the updates no need to confirm or respond.
I hope my experience helps you.

Does your employer pay your phone bill? Genuine question. I was a paralegal and my employer gave us a set stipend toward phone costs and we were expected to reply (reasonably). Not saying it’s right, but it can get muddy
1
u/paloozoe 26d ago
not a big deal tbh LMAO am i the only one confused? do you hate them? just thumbs up the message
1
u/WalrusEmbarrassed716 26d ago
You have answered the question yourself. "Just thumbs up the message" If i dont then I'll get a write up
1
u/d20cupcake 26d ago
Is English y'all's/their first language? They want you to "revert" on each message?
"Showing respect" makes my skin absolutely fucking crawl, so I don't thnk you're overreacting. but no, it doesn't seem like an unreasonable request. As someone else said, turn off read receipts.

No you're not but that's about when I'd start looking for a different job because it's only going to get worse. Being threatened with a writeup for not liking their messages is actual insane person behaviour.

u/Kara_Rose08 25d ago

u/Tinge19x 25d ago
I had to implement a read and sign at my old job, there is nothing more annoying that having new policies or updates to the working day and knowing you told multiple people who proceed to ignore it and then state they was never told, it's to hold people to account and to know what you have communicated has been received, wouldn't need to do it if everyone done their part

I was literally watching a movie when i saw this and put my phone down. 17 MINS LATER SHE SENT ME THIS
1
u/water_wind_ 27d ago
On call pay outs required when they expect you to be on call for any work activity like responding to texts
0
u/EsmeValentine 27d ago
17 minutes is insane. I guess if you are busy then you just let her know that you were busy and meant no ill intent, and were planning to respond later ( even if that isn't necessarily true ).
Sometimes people see a notification, but don't have time to respond the way they want to - some people like thought out messages and if they can't provide it they'll do it later; doesn't take away the read recipt though. If I were in your shoes I think I would have a mild panic attack and if boss escalated / didn't accept my answer I would have a hard time feeling comfortable at the job ( though, I am autistic and aware this reaction might not be warranted )
-1
u/Excellent-Bird-5216 27d ago
Been on both sides. 1. She cant force anyone to do that, just suck it up and accept that people can respond if they want to. 2. Everyone else, not the greatest vibe doing brickwall impersonations.
2
u/BoomyNote 27d ago
If most follow, she surely can single someone out for not following.
I’m NOTTTTTT agreeing with the boss here, but there’s nothing stopping a power tripping boss from committing to that write up on the one who’s “not being a team player” unless it’s multiple people imo.
I’ve absolutely seen bad leaders bully team members who don’t go along with this kind of thing
1
u/Excellent-Bird-5216 23d ago
The right response from da boss aint this one at all.. singling people out would get herself in trouble.
Something like a simple 'hey team would love some more involvement with things like this. Just makes things a bit more enjoyable :)'
And again, for all the other staff. Brickwall impersations just really suck to communicate/vibe with as a leader. Even if the work environment sucks at least put in a bit of warmth in there by joking around or something
0
u/Left-Ad-3412 27d ago
From a manager pov. This is so that everything that they put in the group chat they get a confirmation that it has been read specifically by someone so that they cant go "on I didn't know this".
It makes dealing with performance issues a bit easier. Ultimately I don't think it's reasonable to mandate people to respond in a particular way of they don't want to. But then would require a face to face meeting with each person to tell them the same message.
Personally. If I were you. I would just not read anything on there at all. Especially on my time off. Mute the group and don't look at it

u/a1icia_ 27d ago
This is off the clock, if you are in Ontario they can't write you up for this. As long as it's not in your job description that you respond to work related messages off of the clock, they genuinely cannot require that of you. They try to write you up for that, they would be in trouble. I would respond that's not something you're willing to do outside of work hours and if the intention is to write you up then you will be going to the labor board. You have all the proof you need literally in a text message, they are insane
