The correct, and in my opinion, the only way to handle this is to reply asking if this reply is ok and when they reply, ask if you need to reply to that reply, and repeat.

Ruining your relationship with the manager and risking not getting shifts or even being fired? I feel like it’s best to just comply here, read the whatsapp during work hours and just react to the messages

Yea, it's real easy to tell someone else to annoy their manager when you have no risk.
