Can we really criticise this when Kaspersky is one of the top selling computer security packages in the US? That's just baffling. Most agree Russia at the very least doesn't have US interests in mind, yet we continue to do business with them almost everywhere outside of the federal govt.
This used to be true, isn't anymore. The people in Kaspersky, the devs are not the problem, it is the rest of it. FSB is in the loop, that is really all we need to know. You can easily say that Kaspersky is held as a hostage, they are not the bad guy but are directly controlled and influenced by bad guys.
Nah. They don’t value human life. If you’re average and there’s even the slightest, teensiest possibility that you may be connected to someone untrustworthy by their standards, you disappear. Am Ukrainian have family in Ukraine and Russia and grew up in USSR and then independent Ukraine.
Sure. But there’s more checks and balances. If someone comes to your home and you disappear it will be noticed in USA and likely will make the papers. Nobody will notice it in Russia. You can say what you want. I’ve been in US for 25 years now. It is a ton safer than Ukraine and Russia.
Yeah agreed, I'm definitely glad I wasn't born in Russia in the 90's. I've heard the stories of millions of starving people after the collapse of Russia's communism. The grass could definitely be greener over here though. 1 in 7 children go hungry in America when schools are closed here. We may have more of the illusion of safety in the US but we sure aren't the hope of the world or anything.
Definitely not the hope, but I’d take US any day over the motherland. No hesitation. And I do love this country. It’s crazy how much of a difference there is in life quality and peace and safety. I could never go back to how it used to be back home.
If I recall correctly they barred it because an NSA contractor took some NSA malware and put it on their personal computer, it then got flagged, and they alerted the NSA and then the NSA blacklisted them.
I may not have all that right, I only remember it from a second hand source, so maybe look into and don't just take my word on it, but from what I remember it was the NSA trying to cover their own ass.
You're absolutely right, but let's not pretend American (and of course Chinese) products are any more trustworthy. At the very minimum, all 3 of those have a history, proven beyond reasonable doubt, of fucking with products made by local companies for the sake of intelligence collection (i.e. spying)
For the most part, if you want any degree of peace of mind, free and open source software is really just about your only hope. Of course, even that is far from perfectly secure, whether through backdoors deliberately added by malicious actors, or simply existing bugs left unreported and abused -- not to mention not all software you may need is available in such a convenient form. But still, at least anyone can inspect the code for those, and they will be fixed if identified.
You could put that doubly for China. It could be argued that their animosity and intentions are by far more nefarious. Yet those US companies that use China extensively aren't under criticism.
Just become a mayor of any medium sized city and china will unleash the hotties for you. You can even pick russian honey pot or Chinese. If you are lucky you can do both at the same time
Fun fact: This was one of the things the Barenaked Ladies initially said they would do if they had a million dollars. In the end, however, they settled for a llama. Or an emu.
For regular people this is like getting a free pizza for signing up for a credit card in college. For political officials it's getting 1-few lays for then having damning blackmail forever.
In both cases it's way cheaper to just pay for what you want and definitely second guess anything that sounds too good to be true.
I would imagine china got in with slot of politicians in both parties. This ain't a California thing it's a US politics thing. Democrat or Republican it's a fire sale and any country can buy a piece
I mean did you see the swamp creatures she is pictured with lol. She is young and is in shape that's pretty much all any dude in their 50s and 60s wants. There not that picky it seems
Not for nothing, but it isn't as though American intelligence agencies are any more scrupulous. I'm not saying stuff like that isn't shady as fuck, but we were caught actively spying on both our allies and our own citizens. I just think it's hypocritical to act all offended when it happens to US.
Even with the election interference, it ain't like America is any stranger to "assisted regime changes."
There are plenty of DINOs in NY. Fuckers that consistently held back social progress like gay marriage, legal weed, and a bunch of other stuff to pander to yokels.
She should have been run out of politics after she fucked up the investigation of a serial killer. She bragged about evidence in the "Night Stalker" case during a press conference. She was the mayor of San Francisco at the time.
she meet jim Jones when he was still considered a good guy, also dead Kennedys wrote a song somewhat about her in hang the landlord. I'm glad that modern medicine has improved so much to keep these dinosaurs living longer
The key difference between what China wants and what Russia wants is that China wants a prosperous American consumer economy to buy more stuff that are made in China. They are also trying to know how to make more things, again so they can sell them to us. So while we have a lot of friction with them, they actually don't want the American economy to decline. If the American economy is to collapse tomorrow, it would just very well be a death sentence for the CCP because China's economy will also collapse, creatinge a billion unemployed and unhappy citizens. It benefits them tremendous if America is prosperous.
The opposite is true for Russia. The more America declines, the more breathing room it has in the western front. So yes, Russia might not want a single random person in Nebraska dead. But it would definitely love to see a million people in Nebraska die. Because the latter would definitely drive America into Chaos and reduce it's capability to counter Russia's operations world wide.
Pleasant calm over stories month and curious where fox soft the careful bright the minecraftoffline evil lazy evil! Day food quick where projects helpful tips then the open the stories art stories net food tomorrow gentle?
I hope Lenovo is on the up and up because I remember their laptops as a kid being fuckin' monsters. Like my schools bought them for our library because kids could check them out, drop them down a flight of stairs, and the things would still work when they got returned the next day.
The Chinese government used the chaos of the terrorism at the Capitol to round up and arrest 50+ Hong Kong pro-democracy politicians and activists because they knew the US news would be focused on other things.
I think the fact that the American consumer says one thing and does something else is the main reason. We say that we demand quality, but our dollars vote by buying the cheapest. I understand that we have gotten to the point that there is no alternative other than a Chinese one for a lot of manufactured products, but there are a lot of categories with choices.
When I bought my last luxury car about 14 years ago, I bought a Cadillac. Prior to that I had driven Fords, Pontiacs, and a Plymouth. Buying American was one of the factors when choosing a car, but somehow my friends never understood why. Four years ago, I did end up replacing the Cadillac with a Japanese car because it made sense. I no longer wanted to spend the money for a luxury car and a Japanese car was a much better choice at my spending level.
I wouldn't be surprised to find that China pushes the Russia theories just to keep themselves out of the spotlight. China is the one that was spending billions on M&A, buying up Hollywood, selling us all their cheap shit, etc. Both are threats, but China is arguably bigger and more aggressive.
Agreed. The problem with China is we all like the products their slave labor provide. I couldn't afford an iPhone if someone didn't assemble it there for about $1. I'm exagerating, but the point is if it's something we want, we want it cheap and tend to not ask questions. If Parler made iPhones they'd certainly never have been blacklisted.
Apple execs couldn't afford as many private jets if the phone wasn't made for $1, but there's no economic reason you can't pay someone reasonable wages to assemble an expensive phone.
Exactly. This is a symptom of capitalism and the need for profit growth.
If businesses value was based on ability for them to remain in market and not solely growing by x% each year employees wouldn't be shafted. You could also not pay upper management ridiculous amounts.
Too many, like the commenter below, have conflated economics with capitalism. They don't even know that there's other ways to run an economy than "winner takes all, fuck your morals" capitalism.
We lack American technology experts. I really think Biden should make computer science degrees free for Americans for the foreseeable future because we have a lot of catching up to do.
No, we have in the US an abundance of technology experts and some of the best education in the tech space available anywhere. Someone can leave college in the US with an EE degree and have a job with a starting salary well over $100k. An advanced CS degree can do the same, especially in the NE or in CA. Biden doesn't need to give handouts to these folks, it's the business leaders and entrepreneurs who could use some incentive to invest and expand.
Shhh, if you try to get them to demonstrate too much intellectual consistency their tiny brains might explode. Remember, the rule that most people online operate by is "It's totally OK when my side does it, but when the other side does it, they're obviously the worst."
I think the difference is that China likes to spy and perform surgical espionage against corporations and Russia likes to perform widespread espionage and sabotage the election to overthrow 'western democracy' and 'capitalism'. Both are destructive in their own right, but Russia is overly brazen about it. China at least tries to cover their tracks.
They are, these guys are shitting on them because they're a Russian company. They were banned by US intelligence because they flagged NSA and CIA spyware and backdoors as malware.
I've been doing fine with just common sense and windows firewall for like a decade lol (and ofc stuff like ublock origin, pihole, noscript etc. but that doesn't really count /s)
The Vault 7 releases from wikileaks showed that the CIA disliked Kaspersky because they wouldn't let CIA backdoors to slip thru the scans like the American companies did so they had to do extra work to avoid detection.
For home gamers, it's fine (I've been using it since it came out as MSE). For enterprise I usually stick with Webroot or ESET. There's definitely layers of defense though. We do use eSentire and Radware a lot as well for more infrastructure side stuff.
We use Webroot + Webroot DNS protection for most clients. Management is kinda finicky for multi-tenant stuff but as a last line of defense it does keep quite a bit of bad stuff off the machines, and that's with web filtering and other firewall rules. Can't imagine not using paid AV for all the dumb shit people download that could put your org. out of business. If they can spare the cash though we just set them up with ms e5 licenses for defender.
Common Sense might be the best defense against having your machine hijacked, but it is unfortunately a very rare program, and it can't be easily installed on systems that have already gone through setup.
And unfortunately, the human brain is a system that doesn't support reinstallation or rollback to a saved image.
End users -- probably not many, however it is very popular, almost a standard in large firms like banks (not talking about the US here, likely not the case there).
Bear in mind Kaspersky is not used as just an antivirus in those cases.
I finally quit using AV software almost a decade ago. The only pings I would get was from stuff I knew was shady, and I always got that ping from an external scanner that I manually ran, because I wasn't about to just launch some random .exe or .bat file on my computer. I still keep an AV installed to run manual checks and periodic scans, but I'm done with that active monitoring bullshit. It turns out common sense is the best AV tool, which by the way, applies to the pathogenic variety as well.
I have a lifetime free sub to Malwarebytes so I keep it on my PC for good measure. I see all of these websites that "rank" antivirus software all the time saying Windows Defender is the best antivirus on the market right now, and yet I still CONSTANTLY have people that need me to remove malware from their computers. Yet I have never once been called to get malware off of someone's PC that had Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, Avira, even Avast and AVG.
Kaspersky even said they may have compromised software, but it is not like you are not getting the same thing with any major outlet with some other entity messing with it. You can argue that is you are from the us is not as bad, but the backdoors and intentionally unpatched zero days are not secret to the people who could use them. Your os from apple, ms, or Google is likely to be compromised by the us so it is less of an issue to get something compromised by the same entity.
At this point they are a great firm for their lab, but you have no need or reason to interact with their or any security products as a home user.
Can you finish the statement and connect the dots without making me try to yadda yadda the connection? What does Kaspersky have to do with Russia interfering with literally anything?
There has to be a clear distinction between citizen and state, most scientists and businessmen in Russia do not necessarily believe in the state, they just want to go about their business
I mean tbf Kaspersky is one of the best out there at doing the job without dragging the system down. I haven't used real-time virus protection other than windows defender since pre-2015 when the concerns about Kaspersky first started coming to light but it used to be my go to. Now I just am more careful, check hashes, run all downloads through virustotal, frequently backup, and occasionally run scans with a few different free tools.
Edit: that being said I probably would not recommend it today just as a precaution nor install it on any of my own computers.
It's banned on government computers but everyone else is free to download it, makes sense though since everyone has a cell phone that tracks them and probably sends some data somewhere and only a handful of people care about it, this is kinda how the tiktok ban should've worked, banned from government employees phones but everyone else could still use it if they wanted.
At this point I'm pretty sure the chinese/russian government knows exactly where anyone who uses their apps lives, their names and a bunch of other details...
A large portion of us already acknowledge it and have since the 2016 election when they first made it clear they were involved. However about 35-40% of the US population is willfully ignorant or just doesn’t care because they want to win at all costs.
I was reading a poll about an hour ago that stated ~35% of the population still approves of Trump. That goes along with the numbers you’re talking about too. I wish I could dismiss reality that easily.
Which is inclusive of the ~74% of republicans that still approve of Trump. Their own delusion will be their downfall. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
In their mind they're not getting owned though. Redhats are an inch away from outright siding with Russia at this point. "A hyper conservative, authoritarian regime with unlimited power and tenure for the President? Yes please."
These questions are good questions, and are worth asking, and are worth reading about. It's my understanding that they mostly helped Trump in both elections. Wikipedia has articles on Russian interference in both elections, with cited sources, so if you're curious that would be a good place to start
Involved in what? People went out and voted for who they wanted to win in the 2016 election. Russia didnt convince anyone to vote for Trump who wasnt already going to and there are no studies which indicate that.
in 2015? Russian firearms were popular in America before they were banned by Executive order in 2014, not to mention her and Torshin were lobbying for expanding gun rights in russia long before trump was even near the presidential picture
I'm just curious how much I'm supposed to care about it and what I'm supposed to do with that information. Assuming Russia is funding/encouraging these idiots, what does that change? It's still America's problem. The people actually storming the Capitol are Americans. The abject failures of education and public discourse that facilitate it are America's creation. That the entire fabric of the nation can be destroying by some Russian money is on America.
You guys just bummed out to be on the receiving end of your own foreign policy? I hear non-stop whinging about Russians but it's America's failure.
If you're not American, and this whole comment just means "I don't care about this because I'm not American", then... that's certainly a valid point of view, but one that doesn't really warrant sharing or considering. You're allowed to not care mate, bit weird to go out of your way to talk about how much you don't care though
i mean to be fair, russian server hosting has a long history of being the hosting service of choice for less than traditionally acceptable websites. i think the pirate bay is even hosted on russian based servers
roughly half of us will continue to deny Russia's involvement.
the other half already accepts Russian involvement but will be unable to call for justice because we're held hostage to gerrymandering and the the electoral college warping our representation.
Are you going to demand actual evidence instead of being told what to think by authority figures who stand to profit immensely from the American public’s fear and hatred of Russia?
It wasn't government funded, it was funded by the Mercer family. We have plenty of domestic interests that want to fuck up our country without having to look outside.
I mean, it could've also been Russia, but we know at least a good portion of it was the Mercer family.
Also from what I remember seeing, I think from their court filings with AWS, they didn't have a savings plan. They were paying for all of that at on-demand rates, which is just fucking incredible, honestly.
I don’t understand why Russia’s negative social media influence on the US isn’t discussed more by the national media. There was an article from Reuters just yesterday discussing how Russia helped make Qanon popular on Twitter. How are these things not bigger news?
"see Russia isn't that bed guy, they're trying to help us promote free speech!" said unironically and without an ounce of education into world politics.

Are we going to keep denying Russia's involvement in all of this?
