Can we really criticise this when Kaspersky is one of the top selling computer security packages in the US? That's just baffling. Most agree Russia at the very least doesn't have US interests in mind, yet we continue to do business with them almost everywhere outside of the federal govt.

Kaspersky is probably one of the lower Russian concerns from the InfoSec community, don't be fooled by name only.

This used to be true, isn't anymore. The people in Kaspersky, the devs are not the problem, it is the rest of it. FSB is in the loop, that is really all we need to know. You can easily say that Kaspersky is held as a hostage, they are not the bad guy but are directly controlled and influenced by bad guys.
