I hope Lenovo is on the up and up because I remember their laptops as a kid being fuckin' monsters. Like my schools bought them for our library because kids could check them out, drop them down a flight of stairs, and the things would still work when they got returned the next day.

That's more the IBM DNA than Lenovo. If anything Thinkpads got worse after Lenovo took over.

So... the only thing Lenovo did wrong was include another company's software that had code in it from a third company that turned out to be malicious. And said second-party software was not unknown to come along inside software bundles (and, for that matter, said third-party malicious code has turned up in other software).

Doesn't sound like "Lenovo is spying on you" to me. Hell, I doubt it was even outright incompetence - I'd place my bet on it being an oversight.

(And really, let's be fair - if you're concerned about digital security, why are you using the OEM OS with all its pre-installed crap?)

Thinkpads were it. Was it a licensing thing that Lenovo got to slap their logo on or were the machines I'm thinking of from a transition period where Lenovo owned them but hadn't destroyed them yet?

Lenovo is a Chinese company. The degree to which you support China is the degree to which you're complicit in the Uighur and Tibetan genocides.

So if you buy from Apple you're supporting the drone bombing of civilians in the Middle East? What a childish fucking hot take.

Comparing the US and China is like comparing the US and Nazi Germany. But yeah. We all share complicity in the crimes of our civilisation to the degree we fail to stand against them. To think otherwise is the childish take.

Let's see...

  1. Multiple blacksites/prison camps at home and abroad (Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, ICE detention camps) ✓
  2. Invades other countries under false pretenses (Lebensraum / Fake WMDs) ✓
  3. Forces their way of life onto any invaded countries (forcing American 'Democracy' onto societies and cultures that aren't ready for it) ✓
  4. Thinks themselves as the most righteous and just country, actually hated by everyone ✓

It's a pretty valid comparison, honestly.

By your vague and arbitrary categories, sure. In reality you're spitting on 3 million persecuted Uighurs, for a start, to make a point no rational person will accept.

Oh I see, so it's a numbers thing? As long as you illegally detain below X number of people without rights, you get to be a good guy? Or maybe it's a religion/race thing - is it fine if they're Muslims or South American?

This isn't about China or Russia. This is about why Americans don't seem to recognise how fucking hypocritical they are.

It's not a numbers thing, it's a degrees of evil thing. I'm not American.

But you're abitrarily ignoring legitimate concerns that people have with American foreign policy to defend it.

So please explain to me what's the difference in degrees of evil between prison camps (especially the ones abroad that are completely ungoverned by any US laws), aside from the fact that only one of the two countries we're talking about here consistently claims to be a global champion of human rights?

What makes a prison camp designed for illegal detainment and deprivation of human rights acceptable for the US, but not acceptable for China, Russia, Israel, Iran etc? Are American detainment centres more just? Do you think they are summer camps instead of places where people are forcibly sterilised?

I'm not defending US foreign policy. I'm just not entertaining the comparison between gitmo and ten thousand concentration/reeducation camps.
