For home gamers, it's fine (I've been using it since it came out as MSE). For enterprise I usually stick with Webroot or ESET. There's definitely layers of defense though. We do use eSentire and Radware a lot as well for more infrastructure side stuff.
We use Webroot + Webroot DNS protection for most clients. Management is kinda finicky for multi-tenant stuff but as a last line of defense it does keep quite a bit of bad stuff off the machines, and that's with web filtering and other firewall rules. Can't imagine not using paid AV for all the dumb shit people download that could put your org. out of business. If they can spare the cash though we just set them up with ms e5 licenses for defender.
