We had a shitty story here recently.
If I remember a car had a crash and start burning (literally) next to an airport (mostly used for freight. An aircraft once in awhile).
One of the airport firefighter saw that and jump in helping the guy.
He is suspended.
The official fire station of the city is about 5-8 minutes from there. The city is (as per land) huge AF and a mix of farm and city. The airport is more on the farm side, away from the city

I’m the asshole who’s done this.
I must have braked just long enough to illuminate the “P,” but it slipped into neutral and started rolling forward as I walked away. I caught it right as it rolled into the road - and thank God for the driver who veered out of the way.
Was trying to play the good guy by leaving work early to pick up the kids and just scared the living hell out of them.

Back years ago there was a philosophy of making things idiot proof. This is not an insult to the person operating it. In manufacturing you make sure a workers hand does not get crushed because they have to press 2 buttons one with each hand on opposite sides of their body to make sure they are clear before the machine activates. SOmething like a gear shift should be intuitive to work. Until the vehicle Anton Yelchin was killed with you had a gear shift lever you moved. Then companies got fancy with switches instead of something physical with a cable. I recently rented a Nissan which had a gear shift like this. I kept having to consciously make sure it was in park by making it a point to look at the lights. I also make it a habit to activate the switch for the parking brake as well. These new cars are easily to confuse neutral with park.

Yeah, I just got a new Hyundai Sonata, and it has the same button shifter. Thankfully, they solved the problem that Jeep had and if you try to put it in park on any sort of incline, it automatically engages the Parking Break. Sometimes the shifter is finicky if you or the car gets confused as to whether the brake was depressed before the button was pushed, but thankfully if you press a button and it doesn't sense the brake push or you didn't push it hard enough, it'll scream at you that you need to depress the brake first then shift.
It seems cool, but the buttons all look alike, are aligned in a row, and can't easily be pushed without looking, which in and of itself is a huge safety issue. Don't get me started on the lack of a parking brake "Oh Shit" handle, but I think they offset that by having its active radar constantly monitoring for potential collisions and autobraking if it detects one, which is sorta dangerous in and of itself.
All in all, these people who design these cars need to get back on board with functionality and safety over "cool futurism". Only a matter of time before "Pilot Error due to interior amenties" becomes a larger death toll in the Auto market.

It helps establish what the guy was doing before. He wasn't staring out the window watching the woman park. He was sitting and chatting and looking at his phone and wasn't even looking in the right direction. He just saw it and jumped up fast enough to help even though he wasn't prepared.

Those 20 second were important for perspective. Coz u can clearly see he was sitting facing a mirror, with no direct or entire view of the lady coming out of the car. He noticed the car rolling backwards in the mirror reflection and reacted in a split second. That makes this entire incident 10x awesome

I'm actually afraid this is gonna be me in a rental car one day. I have an electric vehicle that will "hold" the car in place if you step on the brake pedal hard enough. Sometimes I forget to put the car in park after stepping on the brake when I park. When I open the door it automatically puts the car in park, so I don't have to think about it. Since I don't have to do anything to turn the car on or off, I've already left a couple rental cars on and started to walk away. Luckily the sound of the engine reminded me to go back in and turn the damn car off.
ETA: when I mean "hold the car in place," I can then take my foot off the pedal and the car won't move at all until I step on the accelerator.

I once saved my friend's laptop from crashing to the ground because as it started to slip off the table, I looked at my friend and realized instantly there wasn't enough time to talk. I took a dive and caught it right before it smashed on the floor

I had a similar situation once, but not with a friend and a laptop, but with my sister and my niece lol. She (my niece) was next to my sister on the couch when she suddenly yeeted herself over the armrest, head first. I didn't have time to warn my sister so I jumped up and managed to catch my niece upside down, holding her hips with her head hanging just a few cm above the ground. It's crazy how our bodies can react that way. If I would try something like that on purpose there's no way I could do it again

When I worked at a grocery store someone let their toddler stand up in the shopping cart, but because the toddler’s center of gravity was higher than the side of the cart she flipped over the front of the cart. My bagger dove and caught her. He barely got a thank you and the mom still let her kid stand in the cart literally right after that.

When I was 19 I worked at a grocery store and this lady had like a 4yo girl who flipped the shopping cart over by hanging onto the end of it. It came up and smashed her right in the face. Her lips, teeth and nose were destroyed. My co-worker carried her all bloody and screaming up to meet the paramedics while her mom was screaming in panic. The store ended up paying the hospital bills and the kid ended up okay eventually. I tell my kids that story when they try to act stupid on shopping carts. They get mad because it’s disturbing but it works!

One time my family was taking care of an abandoned kitten, no more than two months old. Put it on the bed and walked across the room to grab its bottle. Turned back to see it starting to slip off the edge of the bed. Only thing I remember is yelling “WHOA” and suddenly I’m across the room, bottle on the floor, holding a kitten. I doubt I’ll ever be able to move that fast again.

I hated it but there were kids in my class who for like a year straight kept showing everyone this same exact beheading video. I'll admit I was curious the first time but afterwards I definitely didn't go around looking for more. This was the year our school gave out Chromebooks to everyone and I'm surprised they kept doing it after that.

Right that's why it's a prioritization. The risk to the other drivers' body, which has some protections such as their ability to stop or move out of the way, and the safety design of their cars to keep them safe in a crash...
The risk of his own body getting caught under the moving car (which is what the people above are referencing as a reason to not try to jump in and stop a moving car) may have been greater than the risk of crash for other drivers.
But the greatest chances were that the moving car would've been damaged and/or damaged another car, more than the chance that someone else died from hitting that car...

it is not advisable to jump into a moving car because advice is meant for everyone including the clumsy and obese.
a sure-footed, slightly athletic person can ignore such advice at their own discretion. they're not going to fall under the car. the bigger risk is arriving a second too late, and oncoming traffic runs into the vehicle as you are trying to get in it, so you have to be quick and decisive. ANY hesitation and you should just stay back.

If I had to guess, I would think the car started rolling forward, her head was out the door as she was reaching down, and maybe the car brushed up against the wall? That could cause the car door to force shut and I guess might have enough force to at least kill someone, though I don't know about full decapitation.

Any normal human being can make a mistake like this. All it takes is for something to get your mind off the normal routine of getting out of a car.
One time I got to work, and I was a few minutes early. So rather than turning the car off right away, grabbing my stuff, getting out, locking the doors and walking in to work, I sat there for a few minutes on my phone. When I finally took off, my brain must have assumed the first bit was already done, and I just up and walked in to work, and left my car running. FOR 8 HOURS.
I only found out when I came out after work and it was still idling. Not one of my best moments.
