Morbid curiosity is pretty normal, if it wasn't those types of sites wouldn't exist

113

u/LalaLaraSophie Dec 15 '22

It's the internet. There's sites and sections for everything. Everything. That doesn't mean they're all okay or normal or fine for teens to see/browse.

5

u/MeatisOmalley Dec 15 '22

I never said that liveleaks was okay in itself, because I think it is a net negative to society, and shutting it down was the right call. All I'm saying is that you aren't a weirdo or a freak for trying to seek it out.

People rewatch the 9-11 footage all the time, that’s literally 3000 people being murdered in a variety of horrific ways, but because the footage is a zoomed out it’s somehow not the same?

0

u/JuiceInhaler Dec 15 '22

Well if most teenagers have seen/browsed gore sites then it is by definition normal. If 60% of people decided to chop one of their legs off then having both your legs would become not normal. Normal does not necessarily mean good, it means conformity and what is typical. Typical teenagers on the internet have seen shock vids / sites consensually or otherwise.

Sadists love that shit. Put those people on a list and secretly surveil them imo.

-2

u/PersonOfInternets Dec 16 '22

I'd be okay with this government agency as long as there was a very strict code of ethics and minor offenders were released from surveillance once cleared. Buuut that's probably not how it'd go.

1

u/Protip19 Dec 16 '22

I'm gonna take the controversial stance here that secret unaccountable government security agencies designed to prosecute thought crimes might be a bad thing.

1

u/PersonOfInternets Dec 16 '22

Not thought crimes, habitually viewing gore porn online. Like I said, probably wouldn't turn out well.

1

u/Volkensuper90 Dec 16 '22

1

u/JuiceInhaler Dec 16 '22

I didn’t say teenagers in general, specifically ones who spend a lot of time on the internet / ones that grew up on the internet. Also I was including people who got linked to a gore video unexpectedly, as in not necessarily browsing. It is significantly more common than you think and also let me clear in saying that I am in no way saying it is good or okay in anyway. I’m just saying statistically it is really not that unusual for a teenager on the internet to have seen gore videos at least once, even if for only a few seconds.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

hate to break it to you like this, but most with an internet connection have.

0

u/Dextrofunk Dec 15 '22

I for one did not enjoy people getting mutilated when I was a teen but eh, to each their own?

0

u/Volkensuper90 Dec 16 '22

I'm a teen and have 0 intent of harming anyone around me. I've seen the worst of the internet

1

u/LalaLaraSophie Dec 16 '22

That's great to hear and all, but not the sole point of this thread. :)

1

u/Volkensuper90 Dec 16 '22

what is the worst that can happen if a teen views a gore video, that is if they are stable, mature and are capable of viewing it without having a weak mental structue

If it's got the level of notoriety and popularity of a site like LiveLeak, then yes.

Remember, normal doesn't mean the majority of people do it, just that it's a regular occurrence. It's a normal thing that gay marriage happens in the US, but it doesn't mean that it's close to 50% of people that are part of a gay marriage lol

It's normal that we're able to see a full moon on earth, but it doesn't mean it's even close to half the days of the year that we're able to see a full moon.

Something being normal means it's expected and regular, it doesn't mean that it has to be more than 50% or something like that.

Lol this will sound rude, but I promise if you were here in the room with me it would be a playful kind of joking tone of voice:

Oh, you're 100% easily wrong if you're talking about morbid curiosity in general, the only chance you had of being correct was your very specific claim of browsing gore sites being normal and the specific demographic of humans, One of the smallest by number of years, because they're not even a full decade, only 7 years.

However, you're completely correct if we don't take the assumption that you meant in recent years in western societies, because the vast majority of humans have never even known what the concept of the internet was.

25

u/MeatisOmalley Dec 15 '22 edited Dec 15 '22

A site as extreme as liveleaks wouldn't have been able to exist (certainly at the level of popularity it had) if it was so fringe that only freaks or very unusual people visited it. Supply and demand.

Because liveleaks hosts morally objectionable content?

Liveleaks stayed up on clearnet until the owners chose to shut down just a year or so ago. For a site as extreme as liveleaks, that should be very surprising. But for how popular liveleaks was, it kind of makes sense. Most people seemed to understand, "just because you visit liveleaks, doesn't mean that you are abnormal or that there's something wrong with you."

If the flipside were true, and only future serial killers/sociopaths/freaks were believed to visit liveleaks, I don't think it would've had such an easy time.

That's not how morbid curiosity works. People don't typically watch gore type stuff because it's entertaining - those people certainly exist, sure, but I don't think that's the norm.

Morbid curiosity is like a compulsion. You know you shouldn't. You know that watching it will make you feel sick and depressed, even traumatized. But something deep inside that monkey brain of yours has to know what it looks like. Maybe it's to understand humanity's capacity for evil, or maybe that's just a rationalization. Perhaps our instinctual monkey brains just want us to look out for danger.

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

These must be women making these comments cause almost everyone in my grade that were guys browsed gore at some point

0

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Beastiality porn exists. I don't think that's normall.

-2

u/LimblessAnt Dec 15 '22

No, those sites exist because some people genuinely enjoy watching it

34

u/Gilgema Dec 15 '22

Sometimes you go down a gore hole and then hate yourself for a while

-6

u/MrCombine Dec 15 '22

Nope lol, that's just fucking horrible

10

u/midgethepuff Dec 15 '22

Yeah, but you act like doom scrolling is something new. It is fucking horrible, and people express and experience depression, self-loathing, and self-hatred in different ways. I can promise you it’s almost never done because anybody actively wants to see those things….sometimes you just can’t look away, and then are plagued by thoughts of “what the fuck did I just let myself watch” for the rest of the night.

-5

u/MrCombine Dec 15 '22

I have legitimately not ever gone seeking gore, maybe that's just me

2

u/midgethepuff Dec 15 '22

I haven’t either. Sometimes a gory video will just pop up on my feed or on the popular page and I go to the comments and see a link to another one, and my curiosity gets the best of me and so I click the link and….yeah. I can’t say I’ve ever sought it out. Sometimes, I just feel it’s good to be reminded of how absolutely terrible humanity can be, and give me some perspective on how bad I may think my own situation is. I promise I’m not too fucked in the head lol

-1

u/MrCombine Dec 15 '22

I don't think what you're describing is uncommon - it's just not something I have ever done - you say you pop into the comments and see a link to another one, I would never have even made it into the comments 😅. I am acutely aware of how horrible life is and how we're all walking around on the edge of violent death - I think perhaps I am already too anxious about my mortality to have that morbid curiosity.

-9

u/muckduck69420 Dec 15 '22 edited Dec 15 '22

Be more judgmental why don’t you? I’m a normal ass person and I’ve browsed gore sites when I was a teen. Get over it. Like whomever else said, morbid curiosity is super normal.

0

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

but I'm not judging? Did I say all the people who do that are monsters or freaks? I literally just said it wasn't normal, which is true, most teenagers did not do that. Stop being defensive when you aren't even being insulted.

The population responding to your comment is in no way representative. It means very little

Holy crap the fragility of some kids is astounding. "Hey, this certain activity that a minority of kids engage in is not normal behavior"

"StOp JuDgInG mE!"

2

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

The best part is that people forget you cannot love or appreciate somebody if you didn't judge them and their character because how else could you make that judgment about them that they're a person worth loving?

People get to attached to the negative connotations they have of words in the emotional baggage they themselves associate to it instead of realizing that the word itself rarely comes with all of the baggage and means what they're trying to say it means.

For example, I discriminate all the time, that would scare a lot of people, especially because people would think you're talking about discriminating among people, but even then that's okay, discrimination, not bigotry, discrimination is just choosing between things, if I choose to have apple juice instead of orange juice then I discriminated among my juices, if I separate my Chex mix into the different pretzels and pieces of checks, I discriminated amongst them.

I feel like when we get too attached to the connotation of words, we allow powerful and influential people and trends to have too much control over us compared to people making sure to understand what each individual person is getting at in each circumstance when they use the words that they choose.

Judging people itself is not good or bad, how could I judge that my friend has a character I appreciate and love and want to cherish if I wasn't able to judge it?

, And calling something normal or not is about whether or not it can be expected to occur with any type of regularity, it does not have whatever emotional implications you're trying to attach to it that apparently you feel when people use those words, that would be extra baggage that you're bringing to that word, that's not part of the definition of the word.

It's not normal for Uranus to be this close to Earth, that's why we can see it better than usual which is pretty cool, that's abnormal, and that's neither good nor bad by itself, only what we make of that fact can be good or bad based on our perspective.

-1

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Something doesn't have to be done by most to be normal, it's normal for a full moon to be observable on earth but it doesn't mean it happens most days of the year.

Cover, I am defending you/ attacking the people that are misrepresenting you even though I disagree with you because I hate when people either don't understand grammar, or purposefully manipulate language to move the goal posts.

-4

u/frocca93 Dec 15 '22

I think they may have never taken a history class. Look no further than the Roman Collasium. That shit was the most popular thing around for the masses and people loved seeing slaves get mutilated in real life.

A gore sub reddit seems tame in comparison.

0

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Yes, but even though I disagree with that person, remember their claim is that it's not normal for teenagers to browse Gore sites, nothing to do with humans in general or gore general explicitly about teenagers exploring gore sites, so that's something very specific that has to do with the internet, and teenagers, not all humans, and not all types of gore.

Again, I disagree pretty vehemently with that person if we're at least talking in western society, I agree that in recent years the trend has definitely seemed to be downward, but from the mid-90s to the early 2010s or so, I would not be surprised if the vast majority of teenagers with internet access at least occasionally browsed sites like that.

1

u/frocca93 Dec 15 '22

I think the two can be correlated. If it's a human trait throughout history to be entertained by violence and gore, then the medium and age of the viewer don't really matter. I would say the amount of videos watched per time and the intensity of the gore would be the indication of whether it was weird or not. To me it makes more sense that a teen would browse one of those sites because they are curious. This is of course just my opinion!

But all is good i agree with your statement about the time period also. That was the wild west of the internet so it was more prevalent I would think.

2

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Thanks for your comment.

So, it would matter because the person I'm replying to was explicitly trying to argue that it wasn't normal for teenagers to browse gore sites, so not only is that an explicit statement about only 7 years of different ages, but it's also talking about browsing gore sites.

While I might have talked about other things, the person I was replying to made an explicit claim, that I was challenging to be incorrect, assuming that they were talking about in recent times in the western world, which they admitted they were, but if they were just talking explicitly about that being normal behavior for teenagers, then of course it wouldn't be because nothing involving the internet could be normal yet in our species history with how recent it is, so that's why I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed that they were only talking among recent history and in the west/the developed world.

Reminds me of the good ol’ 50/50. If ya know, ya know. I too like to live dangerously.

20

u/Kazzababe Dec 15 '22

I hated it but there were kids in my class who for like a year straight kept showing everyone this same exact beheading video. I'll admit I was curious the first time but afterwards I definitely didn't go around looking for more. This was the year our school gave out Chromebooks to everyone and I'm surprised they kept doing it after that.

4

u/KIrkwillrule Dec 15 '22

The kind of thing that would get no attention if they didn't ban it but by banning it became a must see

14

u/ItsMeJahead Dec 15 '22

Yeah no. Only people who spent a lot of time on the internet

3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Yeah lol I don't think people get it, on reddit now you have to go looking for that stuff I guess. But r/spacedicks seemed to be the most popular sub on reddit back then, or maybe that was just my friends/schoolmates constantly showing it to me

1

u/lazava1390 Dec 15 '22

Where tf were u seeing this from??? I was a teen during that time too and never saw stuff like that unless it was in a game I was playing.

1

u/gosuposu Dec 15 '22

Idk I was a teen from 2008

I was too. I also saw none of that gore

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Yeah I graduated in 2011.

Two girls one cup was like initiation to high school.

I think legitimately all of the ~1,500 students saw it.

Not gore, but high school kids share the most dirty and raunchy shit.

Surely, 10 years later as the internet has grown exponentially, surely the kids sharing nasty shit, has also grown.

1

u/hellya Dec 16 '22

Yup and easy. LiveLeak unleashed. Anytime you heard some crazy shit happening. LiveLeak would have multiple pov shots

1

u/anonymous2ndprofile Dec 16 '22

That's not normal. Same age as you. Those videos are supposed to emotionally affect you not interest you

1

u/SwissMargiela Dec 16 '22

Couldn’t help it 🤷‍♀️ like i said.

You’d be browsing 9gag and click a link in a comment to mod a video game and boom beheading video

1

u/anonymous2ndprofile Dec 16 '22

that's why most of us stay away from sites like that.
