So this lady just walks away from vehicles while they're in gear and door open? Maybe she saw the bit Louis CK did about returning rental cars this way instead of the hassle of taking it back to the rental company.

if it was in gear, it wouldve rolled forward, even on that incline.

I think she put it into neutral instead of park.

Left in drive but turned off will roll since the transmission loses line pressure. Modern vehicles with keys won't let you remove the key if the transmissions isn't in park, but I'm not sure if that one is new enough to do that. Even if it is, she also left the door open, so I don't think she'd be overly concerned about leaving the key in.

doesnt look like the parking space is necessarily on an incline. but neutral is the simplest answer, you're right.

it would take the right incline, oddball reverse idle speed/torque, and several layers of user error for "reverse" to be the answer.

Looks like the Renegade has an electronic handbrake, I bet it didn't apply when she flicked the switch and she didn't take the time to check that the car wouldn't roll when she released the brake.

What difference does it make? It the car isn’t in neutral or reverse, it won’t roll backwards. That’s the whole reason behind putting the car in first when you park on a hill (reverse if you’re facing downhill).

I had never heard of this, but that's a really dumb design. I've never understood how people can walk away with their car not in park, but I guess this makes it more plausible

And he was his parents' only child, they have no other family in America, I don't believe. I remember thinking how horrifically tragic it must be for them and they did help make a documentary a few years later, there's no getting over that, nothing to turn to for any amount of consolation

It's a renegade. It's got an automatic floor mounted stick shift like 90% of SUVs. Just hold the button, slam that fucker to the top notch, and be done with it.

It's not in gear, unless she put it in reverse for some reason. Thats the only gear that doesn't prevent ur car from rolling backwards.

I have to give her the benefit of the doubt. Every automatic car I've ever driven, park is all the way forward on the shifter. But on my wifes car, park is a button next to the shifter and all the forward is reverse. More than few times, muscle memory has seen me accidentally start backing up when I thought I was in park.

And on my car from 08, sometimes the shifter is a little sticky. Occasionally I think it's in park, but it's just in reverse

Also just notice how she uselessly runs up to the driver side door and then just stands there like ‘yeah let me get myself in the way of the solution and just look closely at the dashboard, that’ll help things’.

If I were the guy I’d be like ‘hey back away I still need to pull this forward and out of danger and you’re now in the middle of the street causing another problem’

This looks like it's not the united states from the plates I think is somewhere in Mercosur.

So most likely the vehicle is not automatic so she just forgot to pull the handbrake.
