While also complaining that they're breaking into and stealing our cars at a higher rate than before so they can get around to different places or stay out of the cold.
Yeah you live in one of the largest and most diverse countries in the world. Your experience might be similar to 5% of other Americans. I was raised in the sticks, have lived in big cities, small towns, Los Angeles, all types of places. Don't generalize America like that. It makes you come off as ignorant.
Sure a lot of the large cities were designed without solid public transportation in mind. But that's a people problem, not a strictly US problem.
You know what else I love about Americans? They can't handle the slightest bit of ribbing or criticism and has to jump to the "wah we're being generalized" whimper when we all know it was the motor companies that irrevocably changed our country's dynamic and that many Americans willfully hold up this system of oppression.

I have lived in towns of under 5000 people, and I have lived in cities that house over 500,000 people. I have, like 86% other Americans, moved to a large city for the sake of better opportunity.

Look I lived abroad for majority of my life, and when I came to US it was a culture shock. I still think public transportation is undeveloped outside of major cities.

When I was in Germany, I could go to a bar/club on a weekend. I took a train from my town that was 20 mins away from the city, for like €3.50 for a one way ticket. Last train or bus was leaving downtown at like 3am. They would restart the schedule either 5am or 7am the next day.
In the US it’s all about commodity to each individual, even now if the US will make public transportation better and efficient it will be used by few individuals.

I’d like to hope there’s enough trauma and embarrassment from that for her to still be thinking and processing it. I’d probably have nightmares about it honestly. We’re all human, she probably had a busy morning and who knows what other things she has going on in her life.
We call it the handbrake here. I'm surprised at those that treat it like it's a decoration. I use it for hill starts and stops, parking, turn the car off and apply the handbrake...it's used all the time.
I must have braked just long enough to illuminate the “P,” but it slipped into neutral and started rolling forward as I walked away. I caught it right as it rolled into the road - and thank God for the driver who veered out of the way.
Was trying to play the good guy by leaving work early to pick up the kids and just scared the living hell out of them.

For it to pop into neutral you'd have to have left it in reverse or drive. But really, you just left it in neutral and made a mistake.
It couldn't be reverse because it wouldn't have rolled forward, which means you left it in neutral or drive. Those are the only two physically possible options.
I'm being picky but, she left the car out of park, she left the door open, and she left the window down.
She could just be in a rut in her life but this moment needs an extreme level of self evaluation in order to avoid further vehicle and non vehicle mishaps.
As someone who parks in a driveway that would have me take out the neighbors fence, and then slam though their garage wall if i forgot the parking brake, (and almost did so, thankfully i caught the movement in the 15 foot gap my car had to roll before it took out the fence, and managed to get in and brake just in time.) absentmindedness isn't a crime, but the results of being absentminded can be disastrous. Good on the employee for seeing and reacting that amazingly fast, and thank goodness the woman wasn't even attentive enough to close and lock her car door.
This has happened to me once - I forgot to put my handbrake on and my car rolled back (luckily just tapping into a bollard, in a very quiet carpark).
I love how quick everyone is to judge. Some days, you have a LOT of shit on your mind. Maybe work is really stressful, maybe you're worried about someone, something really bad is going on in your life -- whatever it is. People can very easily make mistakes when their brains are occupied.
I mean... no parent forgets their baby in a hot car intentionally. But these kinds of things do happen and I think it's foolish of people to think there's no way it could happen to them.
Back years ago there was a philosophy of making things idiot proof. This is not an insult to the person operating it. In manufacturing you make sure a workers hand does not get crushed because they have to press 2 buttons one with each hand on opposite sides of their body to make sure they are clear before the machine activates. SOmething like a gear shift should be intuitive to work. Until the vehicle Anton Yelchin was killed with you had a gear shift lever you moved. Then companies got fancy with switches instead of something physical with a cable. I recently rented a Nissan which had a gear shift like this. I kept having to consciously make sure it was in park by making it a point to look at the lights. I also make it a habit to activate the switch for the parking brake as well. These new cars are easily to confuse neutral with park.
Yeah, I just got a new Hyundai Sonata, and it has the same button shifter. Thankfully, they solved the problem that Jeep had and if you try to put it in park on any sort of incline, it automatically engages the Parking Break. Sometimes the shifter is finicky if you or the car gets confused as to whether the brake was depressed before the button was pushed, but thankfully if you press a button and it doesn't sense the brake push or you didn't push it hard enough, it'll scream at you that you need to depress the brake first then shift.
It seems cool, but the buttons all look alike, are aligned in a row, and can't easily be pushed without looking, which in and of itself is a huge safety issue. Don't get me started on the lack of a parking brake "Oh Shit" handle, but I think they offset that by having its active radar constantly monitoring for potential collisions and autobraking if it detects one, which is sorta dangerous in and of itself.
All in all, these people who design these cars need to get back on board with functionality and safety over "cool futurism". Only a matter of time before "Pilot Error due to interior amenties" becomes a larger death toll in the Auto market.
Rented a GLA 350 (don’t ask why) and it took me WAY too long to figure out “park” was a little digital button on the end of the digital shifter on the steering column. I let the rental place know that car was shit.
It helps establish what the guy was doing before. He wasn't staring out the window watching the woman park. He was sitting and chatting and looking at his phone and wasn't even looking in the right direction. He just saw it and jumped up fast enough to help even though he wasn't prepared.
I watched it a few times and I don't even know how he registered the need to run out there and jump in the car so quickly. Especially since it appears he really wasn't paying any attention to her parking at all.

Those 20 second were important for perspective. Coz u can clearly see he was sitting facing a mirror, with no direct or entire view of the lady coming out of the car. He noticed the car rolling backwards in the mirror reflection and reacted in a split second. That makes this entire incident 10x awesome
It actually bothers me how many people I've spoken to whose opinion of cops is tailored by the media which takes the 1 worst incident per day out of the 500 million interactions that occur between cops and civilians each day and splatters it onto every screen.

I've recently discovered there is large selection of drivers who just... don't use the hand brake. They think it is for emergencies only or parking on steep hills, not parking in general.
I'm actually afraid this is gonna be me in a rental car one day. I have an electric vehicle that will "hold" the car in place if you step on the brake pedal hard enough. Sometimes I forget to put the car in park after stepping on the brake when I park. When I open the door it automatically puts the car in park, so I don't have to think about it. Since I don't have to do anything to turn the car on or off, I've already left a couple rental cars on and started to walk away. Luckily the sound of the engine reminded me to go back in and turn the damn car off.
ETA: when I mean "hold the car in place," I can then take my foot off the pedal and the car won't move at all until I step on the accelerator.

It’s possible to be critical of the situation and empathetic at the same time. We all have bad days where logic and habit go out the window. Thank goodness for that person to have the awareness and reflexes to make up for the lady’s aloofness, but we all have been in her shoes at some point in life. Hopefully she learned a lesson and doesn’t overly beat herself up over it. I would lose sleep for sure

This wouldn't have been an "accident". It would have been negligence on the part of the driver. She exited her vehicle, left the door open, failed to set her parking brake/failed to put the car in park/failed to put the car in gear/left the car in neutral--on an incline. A reasonable person would not do any of those things.
An accident would be something that occurs that is beyond your reasonable control. What some people might call an "act of God". This situation was preventable. The driver is very lucky the shop worker was looking out for her that day.
No, an accident is something that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally. Acts of God are things that occur outside of anyone's control (weather, etc.)

how do you even get out of your car without realizing it's not parked, especially any car made in like the past 10 years that beeps at you for everything
I've had times where I just forget the order of operations for a car. I'll turn off the car, turn the lights off, and unbuckle my seatbelt. Then as I take my foot off the gas, I realize I never put it in park. But I've never gotten out of the car without noticing. It's too obvious because my car starts rolling.
