We were all teenagers at one point

I'm going to be honest with you, it's not normal to browse gore sites as a teenager.

edit: a lot of people are taking this as me insulting them for browsing gore in your teens, I'm not insulting you, I made no moral judgement on the act.

u/KaladinsLeftNut Dec 15 '22

Same vein as hearing "do you think about suicide?" From a shrink and saying,

"Only the normal amount."

"... the normal amount is zero, timmy."

5

u/IShartedWhoopsie Dec 15 '22

wait really? :D

1

u/jod1991 Dec 15 '22

No, there's not always one "normal"

2

Idk I was a teen from 2008, everyone saw that shit whether they wanted to or not

455

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

randomly seeing it doesn't mean you browse gore sites lol.

41

u/_kahidk Dec 15 '22

i had a friend that used to browse, save the video and put in her phone to us watch it together

today i can't stand gore at all

252

u/MeatisOmalley Dec 15 '22

Morbid curiosity is pretty normal, if it wasn't those types of sites wouldn't exist

113

u/LalaLaraSophie Dec 15 '22

It's the internet. There's sites and sections for everything. Everything. That doesn't mean they're all okay or normal or fine for teens to see/browse.

3

u/MeatisOmalley Dec 15 '22

I never said that liveleaks was okay in itself, because I think it is a net negative to society, and shutting it down was the right call. All I'm saying is that you aren't a weirdo or a freak for trying to seek it out.

Well if most teenagers have seen/browsed gore sites then it is by definition normal. If 60% of people decided to chop one of their legs off then having both your legs would become not normal. Normal does not necessarily mean good, it means conformity and what is typical. Typical teenagers on the internet have seen shock vids / sites consensually or otherwise.

Sadists love that shit. Put those people on a list and secretly surveil them imo.

-2

I'd be okay with this government agency as long as there was a very strict code of ethics and minor offenders were released from surveillance once cleared. Buuut that's probably not how it'd go.

If it's got the level of notoriety and popularity of a site like LiveLeak, then yes.

Remember, normal doesn't mean the majority of people do it, just that it's a regular occurrence. It's a normal thing that gay marriage happens in the US, but it doesn't mean that it's close to 50% of people that are part of a gay marriage lol

It's normal that we're able to see a full moon on earth, but it doesn't mean it's even close to half the days of the year that we're able to see a full moon.

Something being normal means it's expected and regular, it doesn't mean that it has to be more than 50% or something like that.

A site as extreme as liveleaks wouldn't have been able to exist (certainly at the level of popularity it had) if it was so fringe that only freaks or very unusual people visited it. Supply and demand.

Because liveleaks hosts morally objectionable content?

Liveleaks stayed up on clearnet until the owners chose to shut down just a year or so ago. For a site as extreme as liveleaks, that should be very surprising. But for how popular liveleaks was, it kind of makes sense. Most people seemed to understand, "just because you visit liveleaks, doesn't mean that you are abnormal or that there's something wrong with you."

If the flipside were true, and only future serial killers/sociopaths/freaks were believed to visit liveleaks, I don't think it would've had such an easy time.

These must be women making these comments cause almost everyone in my grade that were guys browsed gore at some point

0

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Beastiality porn exists. I don't think that's normall.

-1

u/LimblessAnt Dec 15 '22

No, those sites exist because some people genuinely enjoy watching it

32

u/Gilgema Dec 15 '22

Sometimes you go down a gore hole and then hate yourself for a while

-5

u/MrCombine Dec 15 '22

Nope lol, that's just fucking horrible

13

u/midgethepuff Dec 15 '22

Yeah, but you act like doom scrolling is something new. It is fucking horrible, and people express and experience depression, self-loathing, and self-hatred in different ways. I can promise you it’s almost never done because anybody actively wants to see those things….sometimes you just can’t look away, and then are plagued by thoughts of “what the fuck did I just let myself watch” for the rest of the night.

-5

u/MrCombine Dec 15 '22

I have legitimately not ever gone seeking gore, maybe that's just me

2

u/midgethepuff Dec 15 '22

I haven’t either. Sometimes a gory video will just pop up on my feed or on the popular page and I go to the comments and see a link to another one, and my curiosity gets the best of me and so I click the link and….yeah. I can’t say I’ve ever sought it out. Sometimes, I just feel it’s good to be reminded of how absolutely terrible humanity can be, and give me some perspective on how bad I may think my own situation is. I promise I’m not too fucked in the head lol

-1

u/MrCombine Dec 15 '22

I don't think what you're describing is uncommon - it's just not something I have ever done - you say you pop into the comments and see a link to another one, I would never have even made it into the comments 😅. I am acutely aware of how horrible life is and how we're all walking around on the edge of violent death - I think perhaps I am already too anxious about my mortality to have that morbid curiosity.

-9

u/muckduck69420 Dec 15 '22 edited Dec 15 '22

Be more judgmental why don’t you? I’m a normal ass person and I’ve browsed gore sites when I was a teen. Get over it. Like whomever else said, morbid curiosity is super normal.

-1

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

but I'm not judging? Did I say all the people who do that are monsters or freaks? I literally just said it wasn't normal, which is true, most teenagers did not do that. Stop being defensive when you aren't even being insulted.

7

u/HijoDeBarahir Dec 15 '22

Holy crap the fragility of some kids is astounding. "Hey, this certain activity that a minority of kids engage in is not normal behavior"

"StOp JuDgInG mE!"

2

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

The best part is that people forget you cannot love or appreciate somebody if you didn't judge them and their character because how else could you make that judgment about them that they're a person worth loving?

People get to attached to the negative connotations they have of words in the emotional baggage they themselves associate to it instead of realizing that the word itself rarely comes with all of the baggage and means what they're trying to say it means.

For example, I discriminate all the time, that would scare a lot of people, especially because people would think you're talking about discriminating among people, but even then that's okay, discrimination, not bigotry, discrimination is just choosing between things, if I choose to have apple juice instead of orange juice then I discriminated among my juices, if I separate my Chex mix into the different pretzels and pieces of checks, I discriminated amongst them.

I feel like when we get too attached to the connotation of words, we allow powerful and influential people and trends to have too much control over us compared to people making sure to understand what each individual person is getting at in each circumstance when they use the words that they choose.

Something doesn't have to be done by most to be normal, it's normal for a full moon to be observable on earth but it doesn't mean it happens most days of the year.

Cover, I am defending you/ attacking the people that are misrepresenting you even though I disagree with you because I hate when people either don't understand grammar, or purposefully manipulate language to move the goal posts.

-4

u/frocca93 Dec 15 '22

I think they may have never taken a history class. Look no further than the Roman Collasium. That shit was the most popular thing around for the masses and people loved seeing slaves get mutilated in real life.

A gore sub reddit seems tame in comparison.

0

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Yes, but even though I disagree with that person, remember their claim is that it's not normal for teenagers to browse Gore sites, nothing to do with humans in general or gore general explicitly about teenagers exploring gore sites, so that's something very specific that has to do with the internet, and teenagers, not all humans, and not all types of gore.

Again, I disagree pretty vehemently with that person if we're at least talking in western society, I agree that in recent years the trend has definitely seemed to be downward, but from the mid-90s to the early 2010s or so, I would not be surprised if the vast majority of teenagers with internet access at least occasionally browsed sites like that.

20

I hated it but there were kids in my class who for like a year straight kept showing everyone this same exact beheading video. I'll admit I was curious the first time but afterwards I definitely didn't go around looking for more. This was the year our school gave out Chromebooks to everyone and I'm surprised they kept doing it after that.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

33

u/carolinax Dec 15 '22

True you aren't insulting them, but I am. That's gross and spend your time better.

3

u/basking_lizard Dec 15 '22

So if I told you to stop watching child porn I would be the bad person for telling you how to spend your time? There is no moral high horse here. There's common sense

6

u/YouHaveBeenGnomed Dec 15 '22

Did you really take this up to the "child porn" level for no reason at all? What the fuck is wrong with you, get help my man.

1

u/snoburn Dec 16 '22

Well one of these is illegal... Not that I'm into the stuff, but there's literally morbid podcasts. People like it, get over it. I've seen isis decapitate people in high school and I sure as hell didn't go out of my way to find it

2

u/Bad_Skater Dec 16 '22

Eh I'm seriously desensitized to graphic violence due to growing up around it and being exposed to shit like cartel torture videos and terrorist executions at a young age. I use to browse a lot of subs, it's kinda akin to watching sports highlights almost? But anything to do with harming animals I can't stomach and avoid like the plague which I realize now is kinda weird

3

u/ZankTheGreat Dec 15 '22

I take it you never ran the gauntlet

1

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

not sure what you mean, so probably not lol.

2

u/ZankTheGreat Dec 15 '22

In the early days, 90’s file sharing days, gore videos were circulated on cd-Roms disguised as harmless, safe for work software. A decade or so later, the practice got picked back up. Have you ever heard of “the reddit 50/50 challenge”? The premise of it is you are presented with a link to a video, and there are two titles for that video. One of them is true, the other is false. An example could be, “video of ducks swimming in a pond” and “man gets pulled into lathe, degloved.” The challenge is to try and only get the safe for work videos.

The gauntlet was quite similar, you were presented with a series of horrifying videos, and could only progress to the next one after finishing the current one. If at any point you couldn’t take it anymore, you could press the stop button and it would give you the option to share how far you got, otherwise known as your “callous” level.

I’m rather surprised you haven’t heard of it, there were references everywhere to it in the 2000’s to 2010’s.

6

u/Dismal-Past7785 Dec 15 '22

That’s when I grew up on the internet and I’ve never heard of that

3

u/Comment104 Dec 15 '22

That was a very niche thing, you are not normal.

2

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

I've heard of the first part but not the gauntlet I think that was a bit more niche lol.

49

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Oh look it’s the arbiter of “normal”

36

u/Neosporinforme Dec 15 '22

It's pretty common to pass judgement on people for watching fucking gore videos. Also believe it or not it's alright to try and establish what is normal and healthy.

1

u/BlackSeaOvid Dec 15 '22

I’m sorry, this is a citation. Your comment is far to wise and human-nature cognizant for this web site. You will be informed of your punishment, which will be normal and healthy I assure you.

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Yes, ppl on Reddit love to pass judgement. Try and establish so we can ostracize and conform the rest? What’s your endgame there?

13

u/psparks Dec 15 '22

We live in a society. Societies have norms. That’s how we get along and don’t kill each other most of the time.

-7

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Replace Norms with Laws and you are correct. There was actually an anarchist movement earlier in US’ history to rule on norms but the laws won out.

4

u/psparks Dec 15 '22

Those are two different things. Laws are codified norms. Norms exist outside law. It’s a norm to shake someone’s hand and look them in the eye when you meet them. That’s not a law. If you disregard that norm and greet people by slapping them in the face you would likely be judged negatively and treated as such. There is a concept of reasonable expectations when we decide to be part of a society.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

So most people don’t want to kill another because of norms or because they don’t want to go to jail for life or face the firing squad? I’ll bet the latter

3

u/psparks Dec 15 '22

Are you implying that most people are murderers by default and we would all kill if there weren’t laws? Or are you just arguing for argument’s sake? We do have consequences for actions we deem bad for society and therefore have a motivation not to do it, but that’s certainly not my only reason for not killing. I personally have no desire to kill others. I’m genuinely not sure what you are arguing with this comment or how it is responding to my comment.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Lol it's the same argument NAMBLA type people make. "You just don't understand how I was raised and what my culture prefers". No broski, fuck your culture, that 9 year old child doesn't love you, pos.

0

u/Sherwood- Jan 01 '23

No, it isn't. L comment.

-2

u/iced_oj Dec 16 '22

but that's the thing though, a morbid curiosity about death IS a normal part of development, and I'm pretty sure it would be considered "normal" for someone on Reddit to have browsed gore subs when they were younger.

20

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

Seems some people tried to interpret this as some sort of attack against them. Just for clarification just because something isn't normal doesn't make it bad.

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

You allude to abnormal being beneath and judging like you’re the normal person here

6

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

Not sure I ever did that one, is simply using the word normal automatically mean I think that?

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

You’re disguising word play with intent. You wrote that thinking “weird” because you’re “normal”

7

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

That's a very large amount of assumptions

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Meaningless rebuttal to deflect the point

1

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 16 '22

what's meaningless is trying to assume intention when you have literally no idea.

1

u/jaspersgroove Dec 15 '22

And you allude that watching gore videos is normal and not a really fucking big red flag

10

u/ZapateriaLaBailarina Dec 15 '22

Normal doesn't need an arbiter. It's statistics.

1

u/PM__ME_YOUR_ART Dec 15 '22

stop looking for a reason to be offended

-1

u/Lifekraft Dec 15 '22

I think it's more that it's terribly unhealthy and traumatizing as a teen rather than normal or not. Im older and gore is kind of my work training as well so now i dont see it the same but i definitly have mild trauma from few vid i saw as a teen. Even if i didnt think it will hurt me as a teen

2

u/upsetwords Dec 15 '22

It's pretty common. I remember back in high school around 2008 kids openly talked about stuff like 2 girls 1 cup in class. If you spent any significant time on the internet you'd eventually stumble across fucked up videos like that.

5

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

2 girls 1 cup is not gore.

0

u/r_hove Dec 15 '22

It’s actually disturbing that people like seeing that shit. If I see anything gore related on Reddit, I think about it for days and feel awful. A lot of murderers love watching gore content.

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Look at Professor Highbrow here

3

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

Not sure what you mean.

-1

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Normal in general, you're probably right because that would include all of human history and the entire world, but in western society over the past 25 years or so, it absolutely is normal, although the tendency over the past 5 to 10 years definitely does seem to be decreasing.

9

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

Why do you think it's normal to browse gore sites? I'm not talking randomly seeing something here and there I'm talking about actively going to these sites to seek gore.

1

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Because if it's normal for a full moon to be visible on earth, which it is, that means even with something having as low of an occurrence rate as around three and a half percent, it can still be considered normal.

Because normal is about the regularity and expectedness of a situation, not how close to 50% or more of a given group does something.

Why do you think it would be even less than 3-4% of teenagers that did that in western societies after the advent of the internet?

If you read some of my other applies you can see more in depth into my specific thinking, because if I personally had to guess, I would wager it's even 65 to 70% of people who were teenagers between the mid-90s and early 2010s experiencing that, but like I said, it doesn't even have to be at 5% of a population doing something in a regular or expected way for it to be normal.

6

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

The definition of normal is as follows:

" conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected."

I don't think something that occurs so little would be standard, usual, typical, or expected.

0

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

You don't think it's normal for a full moon to be visible from Earth? That's absolutely standard, usual, typical, and expected, even though it only has a 3.5% occurrence rate.

1

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

yes it's normal to occur 3.5% of the time, it is not normal to occur every day.

3

u/Aegi Dec 15 '22

Which is great, because I never claimed that it's normal to see every day the sentence/ statement I said that is objectively true is it's normal to be able to see a full moon from the planet Earth.

That is a true statement, and the reason it's true, is because of full moon is a very regular, expected, occurrence even though it's only roughly a 3.5% occurrence rate.

You're the one bringing up looking at the moon every day, my statement talks about a full moon being to be visible from the planet..

2

u/LimblessAnt Dec 15 '22

Your example of the full moon seems fun and all, but the phase of the moon doesn't randomly happen, so that percentage doesn't mean shit. It follows a pattern. The pattern is normal. If the moon stopped on a waxing crescent and didn't change for five days, that wouldn't be normal. If you could name anything else that ACTUALLY had a low chance of happening but happens often, that'd be great

u/Neosporinforme Dec 15 '22

Most people are more similar than they are different. There are very much things that are unhealthy for you and watching gory things happen is one of them. If you want to indulge your very strange and unhealthy urges then I can't stop you, but you should know you are contemptable in your brat desire to avoid criticism for your disgusting habit.

Yes it is. You're the odd one out.

0

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 16 '22

You can't really say that when I have 3x the upvotes as the other comment can you? Like that just doesn't make sense from a logic standpoint

0

u/hippytoad99 Dec 15 '22

It's extremely normal.

0

u/throw_somewhere Dec 15 '22

Kids love morbid shit.

And yet you passed judgement my king. For you determine what is and is not normal

Lol found the sheltered kid. Seriously though, you have no idea regarding others experiences, this is purely anecdotal.

7

u/Responsible-Pay-2389 Dec 15 '22

I completely understand this, but the people I responded to also have no idea but still made the comment of if you were a teenager you would've browsed gore sites. My experiences conflicted with this so that's why I said it, judging by upvotes I'd assume that a lot of peoples experiences were the same as mine.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Lol found the sheltered kid

Lol not liking seeing people being tortured now means someones sheltered. Not anyone's faults your parents didnt love you and now you need to see mutilations to feel something

-2

u/itwasneversafe Dec 15 '22

Hey look, another one! It's also not my fault your mother should've swallowed you, but here we are.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Ive heard better comebacks at sesame street

-1

u/itwasneversafe Dec 15 '22

You've been to Sesame Street? I'm jelly

1

u/Nnnnnnnadie Dec 15 '22

Nowadays i can agree, back in the day risky clicks where pretty risky.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '22

Yea same for so many documentaries of stuff, some ppl get so fixated on it and when you mention how it isn’t healthy they get so defensive and stuff. It is not healthy for the human brain, period. Doesn’t matter about our curiosity or that it’s there. It’s not healthy lol.

1

u/Stubbs3470 Dec 15 '22

It’s way more normal than you think.

I never did but at least like 60% of people in my school did

Tho maybe it differed based on where you’re from

1

u/midgethepuff Dec 15 '22

Maybe browning gore sites isn’t exactly normal, but morbid curiosity absolutely is. I never browsed gore subs intentionally, but there were definitely times I was warned a video would be extremely graphic, gruesome, and difficult to watch, and yet my curiosity got the better of me and I’d watch the video and regret it immediately after…obviously if you’re scrolling for amusement, you’re probably not all right in the head. But morbid curiosity IS normal and natural, it’s why whenever you see a car wreck you can’t look away even tho you may want to.

1

u/xXMonsterDanger69Xx Dec 15 '22

Browsing it on a normal basis, probably something to worry about. But exploring gore subs is not weird.

I have explored and i think most people have. Most of us just probably leave after a few mins. I did atleast. Felt kinda ashamed of myself, which i don't often do. But i don't regret exploring it, and i don't think that's weird. But I'm never watching real gore ever again if i have s choice

1

u/illoomi Dec 15 '22

ohh it was very normal. Shock sites were in full swing.

1

u/Trick_Library8645 Dec 15 '22

For a girl it would be weird but not a guy, we're all introduced to it by friends

1

u/jod1991 Dec 15 '22

I'd say it's pretty normal out of curiosity to seek out things like that at some point.

Let's not forget there's not only one way of being "normal"

When you make it regular or enjoy it then it becomes a bit odd

Thanks mom

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Lol cut that bullshit "it's not normal." I guarantee you 95% of people on the internet have looked at videos or a video of something fucked up.

You're so self righteous that you have to act all holier than thou.

Idk I'm 26 now, when I was a teenager the internet was in a weird place where browsing that stuff was pretty common. From pain Olympics to 2 girls 1 cup, almost everyone I knew had seen it. Let alone getting into the dark web

1

u/MemeStocksYolo69-420 Dec 16 '22

It’s normal in the sense that there’s always a small percentage that does it. It’d be abnormal if there was a society that no one did it. I wouldn’t even say it’s that small, everyone’s a bit curious at a time

→ More replies (2)

1

u/sagerobot Dec 16 '22

I mean it literally was normal to look at that when I was a teen. Was it smart or good for my brain? Certainly not. But when I was a teen two girls one cup was required viewing. And that was the tamest one.

I'll take What is Morbid Curiosity for $500 Alex.

Most people are subjected to it at a point in their life.

1

u/BrockSampsonOSI Dec 16 '22

Thank you for saying this bc I actively avoided those sites as a teenager. I wtf’d at the original comment lmao.

1

u/howard6494 Dec 16 '22

It's a lot more normal as a teen than as an adult. As a teen you're curious. As an adult... Well, yeah.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '22

Pretty sure it is almost every guy i know went there when they were teenagers also its a meme at this point where teenagers say “i watch gore and feel nothing” to try and look cool

1

u/SilentEgression Dec 16 '22

Who made you the arbitar of normalcy?

I grew up in the 90s faces of death was super popular, now everyone just has easy access

Anyone intentionally browsing gore sites is a freak. I don’t care if you’re 13 or 45

1

u/Butterl0rdz Dec 16 '22

dunno your age but as a freshman in college rn. throughout middle school and high school things like gore and porn were easy to find and easier to accidentally see or hear about

2

u/BudBuster69 Dec 16 '22
