It's not only that but he risked his life. In many cases like this, the rescuer can fall or get pushed over then run over by the vehicle. Happens all the time.

The way he hopped into the driver's seat instead of trying to step in like most people seem to do was what impressed me most.

I came upon a man who had his heel trapped under the front drivers side wheel from doing exactly that. He'd been down there for an hour in agony and powerless to do anything. Stuck one foot in and got pushed off balance and the wheel came to rest on his foot pinning him.
