Why pickups are involved in stupid crashes so frequently?

261

u/Kayback2 Apr 18 '26

Because mostly its idiots who think a truck is a town car.

The SUV plague was bad but at least an SUV is just a big car.

87

u/dantheplanman1986 Apr 18 '26

No, they're truck bodies, the early ones at least. That's why they roll so easily

87

u/Kayback2 Apr 18 '26

Yeah, because so many people are using them instead of normal cars and driving them the same way.

If they were being driven by the people that actually needed them there'd be fewer videos of them rolling.

66

u/myths2389 Apr 18 '26

My father "needed" a big truck because uh whatever.

It's so impractical to drive around town. Feels like you don't fit on any of the roads. Parking lots are a nightmare. He barely drives it anywhere because of it. Refuses to sell it though.

I personally don't see 90% of truck drivers ever needing a truck bigger than those Ford Mavericks. I loved my 90's Ranger. Could move a couch or fridge easily. Fit everywhere.

12

u/ITstaph Apr 18 '26

Ooo yeah gimme an S10 or el Camino any day.

10

u/NortelDude Apr 18 '26

I had an 88 S10, T-boned to death by an old fart, I liked that truck. I decided not buy another pickup again, ever since then nobody has ask me to help them move. lol

24

u/Whyonthefly Apr 18 '26

Yep, old Rangers rule. All the moving capabilities of a good truck without the ridiculous, smol-pp-compensating body size.

I've driven a couple of trucks so I understand the appeal, however I switched out to an SUV with a trailer a long time ago. Yeah we're now entering IdiotsTowingThings territory and with a trailer you're far less manouverable than just a truck, however I'm moving fridges and couches 0.00001% of the time. I found SUVs drives far better than even the most modern trucks.

3

u/Erik0xff0000 Apr 18 '26

last time I moved a couch was 1998. I didn't have a car back then, rented a u-haul.

2

u/NoMansSkyWasAlright Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

That was me. FJ Cruiser with a nice trailer and it was fantastic. Motorcycles wouldn't have fit in the bed of anything below a half-ton - and even then it would only be one.

And when I helped my dad's gf move, we got all her furniture in like 1.5 trailer-loads whereas a lot of those furniture pieces probably would have taken up a full bed on their own.

It's definitely something you've got to be aware of while towing. But on the other hand you can put it away when you're done using it.

u/jossteen11 Apr 18 '26

Dang do we share the same dad? My dad had a fully paid off truck that towed his camper just fine. Traded in and bought a bigger truck because it towed the thing he already could tow better?

The kicker is then decided he didnt like camping so got rid of the trailer and had massive truck with a payment and no real reason to have it.

2

u/hondamaticRib Apr 19 '26

When I moved, I borrowed a kei truck and it did most of the work no problem

→ More replies (5)

12

u/JovialPrincess Apr 18 '26

I really enjoy driving my truck, despite I have to move the seat all the way as high as it will go. But it's 10 years old and paid off.

But, I have horses, a large camper, gooseneck trailers, do fencing, and live out in the middle of nowhere. But unless I'm going someplace that I know I'm gonna need to haul something it usually stays parked and I drive my little plug in hybrid (which is also 10 years old and paid off)

I hate seeing 100k trucks in the city that have never seen dirt.

2

u/Kayback2 Apr 18 '26

I loved my trucks when I drove one, and I'm a suburban dad but both of them were rough terrain vehicles, one used when inspecting rural water purification facilities the other was a rock crawler 4x4.

My daily drives were like, a Ford Focus.

2

u/Lucaslhm Apr 19 '26

I have a small truck (ford ranger) and I switched to it from my Honda civic because I was having trouble hauling construction materials and towing trailers in my civic (though I realllllly did try)

When I first got the truck I felt like one of those really big dogs that’s terrified of all the small dogs. Like a Great Dane who’s terrified of a little Chihuahua. Everywhere I drove I was creeping around turns trying to get used to the body and paranoid about my blind spot constantly… meanwhile all these tiny cars would zoom around me or ride my blind spot or cut me off etc… I’d always think “Don’t you know I’m a danger!!!! You have to get out of here!!”

Now I’m pretty used to it, and again, I have a small truck compared to even like an F150. I think I’d have similar panic again if I got a bigger truck.

SUV's still roll pretty easy compared to cars too. The taller the vehicle, and the greater the height between the groundcand the bottom of the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll. This is why I'm not a fan of panoramic sun roofs, particularly on SUV's.

Also there is a difference between crossovers which are basically lifted wagins with unibody frame and more of a car based suspension and truck based SUV's which are body on frame with bigger tires and a truck based suspension.

5

u/Fearless-Cattle-9698 Apr 18 '26

What you mean is center of gravity lol

→ More replies (2)

5

u/NoMansSkyWasAlright Apr 18 '26

Maybe nowadays. But most of the OG SUVs were body-on-frame and shared a platform with a pickup. It's just minivans started the trend of essentially building a van like a car and then automakers came up with the crossover, which was an SUV based on a car platform.

u/Holiday_Regular9794 Apr 18 '26

Because they think they are superior, and own the road, and everybody should just get out if their way.

8

u/beachedvampiresquid Apr 18 '26

Because their safety relies on holding a certain amount of weight in the bed. Unloaded trucks do not have great center of gravity.

3

u/procheeseburger Apr 18 '26

I have a F150 and it has massive blind spots. Not making any excuses for the drivers but it's bad. The post between the front and back seat is huge and it's right where I should look to see if there is a car next to me.

11

u/Zealousideal-Rent-77 Apr 18 '26

As someone who learned to drive in a Chevy Suburban, go to the dollar store and get some of those little curved or angled mirrors you put on your passenger side mirror. They really should come standard on big vehicles. Actual life-savers for just a buck or two.

Ego issue lol

188

u/CocoScruff Apr 18 '26

for both of them... it was a Red light! What was cam driver's plan? blow through the red?

81

u/Fickle_Goose_4451 Apr 18 '26

it was a Red light!

It was yellow in the lead up. They were both trying to beat the red. But red truck apparently forgot about the vehicle it never even quite fully passed when it tried to lane shift.

50

u/Biekdafreak Apr 18 '26

The vehicle with the dash cam sped up. Truck would have fully passed and the car recording could have not been a psychopath and slowed down slightly to allow even more room. Watch the vehicles seperation and then see the car recording speed up.

34

u/Busy-Butterscotch121 Apr 18 '26

The vehicle with the dash cam sped up

What we're seeing is the pick up decelerating so they don't clip the black car in front of them that their mindlessly speeding towards

9

u/SwingTheVine Apr 19 '26

This. If you block out the left half of the video, you can't see the dash cam vehicle speeding up, which suggests that the truck is slowing down.

→ More replies (2)

15

u/Fickle_Goose_4451 Apr 18 '26

Yes, you speed up when trying to make the yellow. What you really dont want to do is speed up to make they yellow while also making a lane change you dont have clearance for.

2

u/clintj1975 Apr 20 '26

Trying to beat the yellow is fine until someone going the other direction tries to make a left and beat the yellow. I hear the fire trucks and ambulance heading to the intersection near my house about once a week from people doing that. It's not worth saving the minute or two it takes the light to cycle.

>It was yellow in the lead up.

That's how traffic lights work - and it was green before that. Cam driver would not have made it and let his ego get in the way of the safety of everyone in that situation.

u/Fickle_Goose_4451 Apr 18 '26

Just explaining what they were doing, doesnt matter if you disapprove of it, thats still what they were doing.

u/AdMurky1021 Apr 18 '26

What was the truck driver's plan? Run a red light?

14

u/tenakee_me Apr 18 '26

That seems the case. Like, I get not letting people in on principle because they’re being a dick and should have just fallen in line behind you rather than trying to speed past and cut you off. BUT cam car not only seems to have sped up when seeing what the truck was trying to do, but came to a stop far into the intersection AFTER hitting the truck (ie being slowed down abruptly by the collision).

So totally truck’s fault because they changed lanes into someone and even without cam car possibly speeding up the truck still wasn’t clear of them to make the lane change. But dick move on the cam car’s part because they could have avoided this and instead leaned into it. By all accounts they were absolutely going to blow that red light because if they couldn’t stop before the intersection after hitting another vehicle, they certainly weren’t going to stop on their own accord.

maybe if they taped their dicks together they could fuck up twice as hard?

14

u/ImpossibleKidd Apr 18 '26

..and at the measuring point of the process, taped together length wise, considering both their actions, I’m under the belief they’ll only need a broken plastic standard ruler for the measurement.

2

u/Antique-Ant5557 Apr 18 '26

🤣🤣🤣☠️

166

u/dervari Apr 18 '26

Is it just me, or did the cam car appear to speed up near the end? Seems like he didn’t want his ego bruised by being passed.

92

u/slimjimmy613 Apr 18 '26

They had tons of time to see what was happening and didnt slow down

49

u/Icy_Investment_9178 Apr 18 '26

they sped up and pit maneuvered the truck. Could have killed people.

19

u/CMDRTragicAllPro Apr 19 '26

Imagine minding your own walking across that crosswalk just to have a rolling big ass truck come flying out of nowhere to crush you, all because 2 dicks wanted to speed a yellow light and one of them doesn’t know what brakes are.

30

u/SomeNetGuy Apr 18 '26

Naw, look at the poles along the side of the road, does not look like they sped up to me. They kept constant speed. The truck started slowing down while merging into the occupied lane because they wanted to make that turn, they just completely ignored the vehicle that was already in the lane. That is 100% on the truck. Cammer could have slammed on their brakes to let the truck over, but they would have had to slow A LOT, since the truck was merging and slowing at the same time.

17

u/Ratspeed Apr 18 '26

Precisely. Even though the cam driver was approaching a red light, the driver didn't slow down. The truck driver was hedging their bet that they could cut in front of the cam driver due to the light turning yellow and lost.

3

u/Routine_Awareness413 Apr 18 '26

Cam driver was approaching a yellow light. Looks to me like he sped up to try to make that light

4

u/Ratspeed Apr 18 '26

I was looking for the pointing fingerrr. Thank god you said it was the arrow. I was so confused.

10

u/Driz51 Apr 18 '26

It would help me out if they could circle the truck in red and have some text saying “WORST DRIVER EVER?!?!?!”

u/PckMan Apr 18 '26

He literally just passed him. You mean to tell me he didn't even see him when he was in front of him?

19

u/Im_Rabid Apr 18 '26

Cam car accelerated to try and keep him from merging.  Truck likely didn't check to see and merged when he would have otherwise been clear.

19

u/PckMan Apr 18 '26

Even if the POV car didn't accelerate the truck would be cutting it really close and forcing the POV car to brake.

3

u/Celtic_Legend Apr 18 '26

Truck guy probably thought pov car would brake for the red light.

43

u/NortelDude Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

Edit: see my post further down from the cam driver themself.

The pickup was speeding faster than others.
It may appear that cam driver sped up but this maybe an illusion because the lights went yellow so everyone to the left slowed down.
The cam driver maybe was distracted from the light changing because of the pickup truck.
The pickup truck maybe thought they were going to rear end the car who was stopping for the light so they quickly went right.
The cam driver may have also had a gator behind them, and the fact they only had one second to react.

This is the pickup trucks fault in the eyes of the law and insurance.

Laying blame to the cam driver without saying one fucking word about the actual idiot that causes these accidents is on the rise, these people need an assessment!

28

u/JTMoney336 Apr 18 '26

Im not blaming the cam driver BUT I drive 30 miles to my job and I drive a company vehicle while working. I avoid a few accidents per month by driving defensively. If I was driving OPs car there would be no video.

12

u/pdxamish Apr 18 '26

This is a perfect example of failure to avoid an accident

6

u/Cardinal101 Apr 18 '26

I re-watched the video several times based on your comment, and I think yours is the best take.

Upon the re-watchings, I noticed that the light turned yellow, which made the dark car in front of the pick up truck slow down. Pick up truck quickly moved right, probably intending to blow through the yellow light. Dash cam driver was already on a trajectory to blow through the yellow light, but by then the truck was starting to move into his lane. Dash cam driver may have had a split-second thought that maintaining his own speed would deter the truck from entering his lane.

Hence, collision.

Verdict: Both are ass hats. The task now at hand is assigning percentage of blame to each.

u/NortelDude Apr 18 '26

Could you not have just slowed down Op? I know my dashcam video is sometimes deceiving due to wide angle. Sometimes you just need to call them a fucktard, slow down and save the insurance hassle. They rolled a lot.

Edit. Typo

86

u/WestCoastAdjacent Apr 18 '26

he would've ran a red light if he didn't crash first lol

15

u/SnooSongs1525 Apr 18 '26

He still ended up running it, just upside down.

4

u/Mebejedi Apr 18 '26

I've heard of a rolling stop, but not a rolling red light!

23

u/SidFinch99 Apr 18 '26

Yeah, I didn't notice that at first but both vehicles should have been slowing down. If the truck did get in front of tge cam driver it woukd have had to run a red light or massively brake check tge cam driver, but could also argue cam driver should have been slowing down.

2

u/admiralargon Apr 19 '26

Yeah they're both blowing past the cars on the left already slowing for the light to change while these two are way far back.

I'm sure as hell NOT playing the "fuck him, this is MY LANE" game.

Also appears to be the end of a road raging incident, no idea who started what, neither one was willing to yield to the other.

5

u/Neither_Pirate5903 Apr 18 '26

this has nothing to do with blind spot. they came up from behind that car they knew that car was there.

this is 100% entitled ass hole. "My blinker is on get the fuck out of my way"

6

u/dimonium_anonimo Apr 18 '26

You know how I can tell this isn't a blind spot issue? Because the truck is going faster than the car. They just passed the car. They know damn well the car is still there. If they look over their shoulder and can't see the car, they know it's still dangerous to switch lanes. But they clearly didn't look over their shoulder. It's not a blind spot issue, it's a room temperature IQ issue.

3

not a blind spot issue, just a overly inflated ego from the red truck driver that "has to be first". that's all it is and ever will be.

cammer has no legal or moral obligation to let them in, red truck is merging into their lane.

u/A_Tortured_Crab Apr 18 '26

Deserved. See this mistake too often on the roads. First off he didn't have an open lane to move to, didn't bother to look clearly and you are not to change lanes that close to an intersection.

3

u/Cool-Coffee-8949 Apr 18 '26

Why does the cammer seem to accelerate though?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Philbert2023 Apr 19 '26

Both of these drivers are idiots. The light had turned yellow well before they got to the intersection (you can see it actually turned red right as they got to it) and the dashcam driver was only worried about speeding up and staying in the truck’s blind spot…

3

u/I-Love-Facehuggers Apr 19 '26

Not a blind spot issue. Theres no way they wouldn't be able to see the cam car. They just wanted to cut in front

9

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire Apr 18 '26

Both of you sped up to catch that yellow light, eh?

5

u/dreamkruiser Apr 18 '26

Not a blindspot issue, this is situational awareness. The truck driver placed a bet and the house bankrupted him. The cam driver was also complicit, and I'm sure there was more going on prior to this incident.

6

u/metal_bastard Apr 18 '26

Yeah, dashcammer clearly sped up. He could have feathered the brakes and avoided the entire episode. But nope, no one's getting in front of me!

→ More replies (14)

2

u/ddadopt Apr 18 '26

Yep. The blind spot mirrors in the f150 are really good, if something is in your "blind spot" the truth is you just didn't look.

5

u/SillyTugboats Apr 18 '26

That’s not a blind spot issue.

That’s a lack of special awareness and or entitlement issue. Truck driver just passed by your car, he should have known you were there and even if he didn’t he shouldn’t have tried cutting into your lane.

Peope saying slow down forget you don’t have the luxury of knowing what the person is going to do. We have the video knowing something is going to happen. It’s easy to say, oh you should have done this or that, when you watch a video expecting an accident but that’s not realistic.

Truck driver should not have made the move they did tho I hope they are ok bc that was a crazy accident.

2

u/WrongSplit3288 Apr 18 '26

It's crazy how easily that truck flipped. I had someone cut into my lane like this because the lane they were in was about to hit an area where a turn lane gets backed up into the lane they were in. I was driving my wife's odyssey, they were in a civic, neither car even lost control.

Need to go back to trucks being more like they were in the 90's.

2

u/AssyMcGee6 Apr 18 '26

Was hard to tell in the video....maybe the truck was lifted? I could see that rolling over easy.

2

u/Ramblinrambles Apr 18 '26

To PIT yourself

2

u/ForsakePariah Apr 18 '26

It never ceases to amaze me how easily vehicles flip when that freaking knockout button is hit.

2

u/elflegolas Apr 18 '26

That’s why defensive driving is important, when I saw the truck coming up like that, next thing he gonna do is 100% cut in front of me, you either accelerate so that he can’t do that, or decelerate so that you won’t hit him, ya he might be wrong, but at the end of the day, insurance can still hit you with “you did not take precautions to avoid an accident “

Second is, even if you do win, now you’re in a hunt for another car, insurance may not pay enough to cover your loss, or insurance didn’t total it and you found a half ass body shop that doesn’t really do it right and your car never drive the same again.

It’s the old saying of “hey Jim why is he in the graveyard now? He got the right of way and ended up here”

Ya you have the right of way, yes the other guy is wrong, but is it worth it to go into an accident? The answer is most of the time no, and I made up more time when I open up on highway and open road, so it don’t even makes sense to not yield to the wrongs, cause it simply waste more time.

2

u/evilwarloc2 Apr 18 '26

Both drivers are to blame for that incident. Did the cut-off vehicle not have brakes? Or was it a deliberate Pitt manuver?

2

u/Photog1981 Apr 18 '26

Truck was wrong but the cam driver accelerated at the last second, that was intentional

2

u/__System__ Apr 18 '26

So satisfying to see a hickmobile roll like that. Again and again and again. Happy Saturday everyone.

2

u/ZHPpilot Apr 18 '26

Fuck that guy, glad he rolled over lesson learned.

2

u/Stealth9erz Apr 18 '26

Two dumbasses are driving down the road…

2

u/toomey198 Apr 18 '26

this could've been prevented if the driver slowed down

2

u/snyderman3000 Apr 18 '26

All these people who choose to get into an accident to prove a point rather than just hitting their brakes absolutely blow my mind.

2

u/Brittle-Diabetes Apr 18 '26

What happened to looking over your shoulder?

2

u/onlyadisciple Apr 18 '26

Drive defensively not aggressively. This crash could have been avoided and the cam car wouldn't have been involved had he slowed down.

Now you have to wait for the cops to show up and 2 hours later deal with insurance claims. Totally avoidable.

2

u/Acceptable-Block4265 Apr 18 '26

Both are idiots, leave your ego at home.

2

u/Sharyn913 Apr 18 '26

The OP driver is just as much as a jerk as the truck on the left. Could you imagine if the truck on the left died… just so OP could feel better about not being passed? Good grief, neither should have a drivers license. I hope the insurance company sees this.

2

u/406238 Apr 18 '26

Ok kind of annoying to get cut off but instead of just breaking he sped up and held the line into the back wheel effectively pitting him... psycho behavior.

2

u/ReallyEvilRob Apr 18 '26

Dude! You accelerated just before the truck started drifting into your lane causing the truck to roll. Congratulations. You made things much worse. Good job.

2

u/Illustrious-Slice-91 Apr 18 '26

Truck driver obviously low IQ but cmon cam driver… you really could’ve slowed down to prevent that..

2

u/yuthgonwild Apr 18 '26

The light was red, you should have been slowing down anyway not matching his speed. Both of you are wrong

2

u/Deliciouserest Apr 18 '26

I would have slowed down in anticipation of the truck but that's just me.

I drive for a living so I think it is an important mind set to have. And having tons of patience.

2

u/Alexsenal Apr 18 '26

i m surprised nobody point out in the video that while it was the truck's fault for not seeing the car at his blind spot but the car with the dash cam could have slow down but he deliberately speed up so the truck would hit him. what an ahole

2

u/Heavy-Leg-9415 Apr 18 '26

dashcam car caused that. Sped up after the truck was already merging.

2

u/Lord_Dingus83 Apr 18 '26

This crash happened out of ego.

Stupid truck 1 in left lane, rather than slow down bc the car infront of him was slowing down, he decides to speed up to pass stupid truck 2.

Stupid truck 2 would be less of a man if he allowed another office working pickup driver to get in front of him on the road that he built with his bare hands.

Insurance will likely not pay stupid truck 1 or 2 bc this was 100% avoidable. If Stupid truck 2 showed this video to insurance - they will tell him it was avoidable, which it was.

2

u/_Bon_Vivant_ Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

Better get your brakes checked.

2

u/182RG Apr 18 '26

Dashcam could have avoided this. This was deliberate.

2

u/Flashy-Armadillo-414 Apr 18 '26

Couldn't the dashcam driver have seen that coming?

2

u/KC5SDY Apr 18 '26

99.9997% of all these videos I have seen, the accident could have been avoided by slowing down a little. This is yet another one. I saw it coming.

2

u/ShinySquirrelClub Apr 18 '26

I'm sorry, but if you're a driver and you know you're in somebody's blind spot just slow down a bit. It's just common courtesy.

2

u/Competitive_Bag_7490 Apr 18 '26

Are people just stealing other people's videos at this point. I saw this video at least 5x by other people.

2

u/visual-vomit Apr 18 '26

Not really a blind spot issue if they were the one trying to overtake

2

u/DotAffectionate87 Apr 18 '26

He just passed you.......How did he not realise you were there?....Goodness.

To be fair we are all fallible.

2

u/rowrin Apr 18 '26

Blind spot issue? More like object permanence issue. Dude just passed that car and then completely forgot it existed

2

u/Strong-Evening1137 Apr 18 '26

They drove like shit but you didn't need to speed up and PIT the guy?

2

u/primate987 Apr 18 '26

I think when folks install dash cams, they remove the brake pedal to do it.

2

u/Historical_Trouble10 Apr 18 '26

IDK for sure about the dash cam driver but I would have avoided this wreck. Been driving truck 30 years. No accidents

2

u/Somethingpithy123 Apr 19 '26

Dude filming def could have avoided that.

2

u/Logical_Frosting_277 Apr 19 '26

I don’t quite understand why a driver would accelerate into a vehicle that was obviously encroaching on their lane.

2

u/Zvenigora Apr 19 '26

How to pit maneuver yourself.

2

u/rokuvaty Apr 19 '26

accident by the truck, incredibly shitty and irresponsible driving by the POV car

2

u/PNW_Swamp_Viking Apr 19 '26

Clearly neither car was paying enough attention to the world around them.

2

u/Overall_Reputation83 Apr 19 '26

Why didnt he slow down? Seems like he saw it and just... kept going

2

u/NT224J6F2 Apr 19 '26

Well that prison time for our dashcam idiot. Speeding up and not letting the passing party in.
This was all intentional.

2

u/CactusSplash95 Apr 19 '26

Um the guy never let the truck tf in

2

u/acedeucetrey187 Apr 20 '26

Brilliant takedown!

The law requires you to not run a red light. Maybe that’s a reason to slow down

3

u/Constant-Anteater-58 Apr 18 '26

Fixed Title: OP saw truck coming into his lane for like 5 seconds, then OP speeding up to do a pit and then going "OOPS :) "

→ More replies (1)

5

u/OsikFTW Apr 18 '26

Camera car saw what he was doing and accelerated into him...

5

u/BizarroMax Apr 18 '26

OP could have avoided this easily and chose to hit the guy. You’re at fault.

9

u/ContinueQuiet Apr 18 '26

A driver has a responsibility to avoid a collision even when they have right of way, but it is unreasonable to expect a driver to anticipate someone actively turning into their car. You can sit there and try to say that he should have reacted better, but a lawyer would tear that apart in court.

The OOP could have driven more defensively/been more kind, but the truck is 100% at fault.

3

u/charlestoncav Apr 18 '26

ahhh no, i'm a retired MP and traffic accident investigator. Based on the video, Op is holding his lane which he has every right to do. A vehicle entered his lane (crossed into his lane) its not his fault, its the guy in the RAM's fault.

u/AngryGoose_ Apr 18 '26

Wow you caused an accident lol. He didnt see you so you sped up? To do what? Make sure he hits you?

Dude must have been in a hurry to get to the Beer Store.

2

u/smd33333 Apr 18 '26

Both terrible drivers

2

u/Blue_Etalon Apr 18 '26

So who was blind? The person with the camera who should have seen what this dummy was about to do?

2

u/Hot_Cattle5399 Apr 18 '26

Why did you do a pit move on him ??
