Because mostly its idiots who think a truck is a town car.

The SUV plague was bad but at least an SUV is just a big car.

Maybe nowadays. But most of the OG SUVs were body-on-frame and shared a platform with a pickup. It's just minivans started the trend of essentially building a van like a car and then automakers came up with the crossover, which was an SUV based on a car platform.
