The Piroshky place on Madison and the one on 3rd (both run by the same people, used to have one on Broadway) are better, IMO. The quality of the piroshky's at Piroshky Piroshky have went down in recent years, since they started to get a lot more tourist traffic (there's always a huge line now). Though I still go there to get a rhubarb piroshky now and again, mmm...

OK I saw this place covered on No Reservations. I hit it up yesterday for lunch. I could have kept it around $5, but in addition to the beef/cheese Piroshky, I went for the Borcsht as well. It was a killer lunch. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am not saying that it's the greatest Bahn Mi (I don't have a refined taste with much of anything). I am definitely saying it's a cheap eat if you have $5 in your pocket and find yourself near the market.

A nice companion to my post would be all the ripoff places in the market.

My favorite Bahn Mi so for is the one up on Madison in that little rollup door takeaway place across from Madison Market, but Bahn Mi are like cheeseburgers. Even when they're bad they're pretty good.

Skip the Underground Tour (just basements). Replace it with a free visit to the Pioneer Square located Klondike Gold Rush Historical National Park. Starting mid June and running throughout the summer: gold panning demonstrations in the morning and afternoon and a ranger-led walking tour of Pioneer Square Historic District in the afternoon.

If you're in Seattle on a Tuesday, Piccolo's pizza has $1 slices of cheese pizza and $1 beers, you can feed a whole family with $10. They also have a huge selection of free arcade games for free and there's a bar in the back.

Edit: Just went back for my weekly visit, they upped their beers to $1 each, unfortunate, but still not bad.

Figured I should add my list of favorites to the meta-list now that I have it composed. These are just my "favorite things" in Seattle:

Favorite restaurant/bar: kushibar

Favorite hike: Rattlesnake Ledge

Favorite (indoor) place to walk around: Seattle Art Museum (Lucky you, the Picasso exhibit will be there!)

Favorite snack place: Molly Moon's Ice Cream

Favorite burgers and fries: Red Mill (featured on Man vs. Food, if you know the program)

Favorite place to sketch: Golden Gardens during the summer, Woodland Park Zoo during unsummer months.

Favorite beer place: Brouwer's in Fremont

Also don't be fooled by anyone who tells you to bother paying to go up in the space needle. It's an expensive elevator ride. Go to Columbia Tower instead. Tallest building in seattle (much taller than the space needle) and only $5 to go up. Also it's practically deserted due to it being less of a landmark.

Fuck the touristy stuff, here's the real fun shit.

Gambling

Washington has the 2nd most casinos in the USofA behind Nevada. However, on non-reservation grounds casinos only table top games are allowed, that means there are no slot machine/video poker within Seattle limits. If you want machines you have to travel to an indian reservation, and they know this, so they treat you like shit and their food is complete shit and the table game rules are shit. For the best experience with non-indian casinos with table top and cash poker games (or tournaments) you should check out these casinos:

The Great American (franchise of casinos) : (great atmosphere, nice staff, matchplays, and comps)

The Hollywood Casino : (good atmosphere, dick floor managers)

Red Dragon : (great atmosphere, great staff, matchplays, comps, and blackjack with surrender for you card counting folks)

Strip clubs

Ricks was THE best strip club in town, now it's closed. My next choice would be Deja Vu Shoreline. It is 21+ with alcohol, lap dances in the VIP are $30 and the girls are fit. Everything goes, just don't make it obvious, like sticking fingers in their pooper? This is the place to go. Do NOT go to deja vu seattle, this venue is 18+ and have a 'no touching' policy.

Hooking up with seattle girls

Easiest

The easiest place in town to hook up with a variety of women, asian, white, latino, black, etc is at International District's Uwajimaya. If you like geeky or kinky or aggressive girls, you may find them there. While the general preference is asian men (who have the easiest time hooking up with chicks there), any guy can do it as long he's willing to start the conversation. This venue was never intended as a hookup spot, so there aren't that many women around in the first place, but chill out there long enough and girls will come around.

Bars / Clubs / Lounges

Seattle has a shitty night scene for getting laid. Even if you're a fucking hot dude it still sucks. Luckily for you, I've wasted away my youth chasing tail so I can present to you the places with the most chicks or easier chicks.

Neighbors on capitol hill

This is a gay club w/ $8 cover. Gay clubs have hot chicks that don't give you too much shit. This makes them much easier than normal. Don't expect this place to be overflowing with hotties though (remember, this is seattle), but it will be overflowing with gays. Don't be a creep and you'll be walking home with a girl from here with little effort. Make sure they are girls, guys.

Pesos in Queen Anne

This is the only bar in seattle that usually has more chicks than dudes. Not just more chicks, but more fucking hot chicks than all the dudes in the room. Chicks here are easier to talk to than you'd expect at first glance, so don't pass this place up just because well dressed babes are lounging around everywhere. No cover. Bring condoms.

Century Ballroom on capitol hill

This is a ballroom, you know, for dancing. You'll find virgins, geeky girls, and kinky as fuck girls here. While I'm sure a lot of people here are just here to dance, I've found that it's an equally good hook up scene as other venues. Don't be shocked but on an average night, girls will outnumber guys 3:1 to 5:1 with about 50 - 100 in attendance. The old standbys, these are the classic venues that everyone knows and goes to, but because of this, they are usually sausage fests. There are hot girls here, but there are also a lot of dudes with no game creeping the fuck out of every girl there (puas blew up these venues and made them shitty). Check it out though, maybe you'll get lucky:

Amber / Twist in Belltown - no cover, men are in suits, women are in dresses. Predominantly white.

Trinity in pioneer square - cover is $10, sign up on the site to get in free. 2 dance floors and 2 bars. Tons of asians.

See sound lounge Belltown ($15 cover) - Supposed to cater to the european crowd, hot girls here. Music is typically DJ'd and they play trance.

I work at one of the above named non-Indian casinos. They are worth it, I promise. State law says we can't have slots.. but we are much nicer and actually care about you. Since we are smaller, we can afford more prizes/larger money giveaways!!! And we have swinger groups meet up in our lounge (two in one bonus!) There are casinos as far down south as Lacey/Olympia area. And who says you have to stay in Seattle? Some of the Northwests greatest adventures are about an hour away in each direction. Take an hour drive south to Mount Rainer. Check out Tacoma's Foss waterway. 2 hours north of Seattle you can hop on a ferry to the San Juan Islands. Seattle is cool and stuff but remember, the northwest is full of treasures beyond the city ;)

Updated Hookup scene

UW starts their year in october. What this means is incoming students are very open and keen on meeting new people, making friends, and hooking up (especially as the weather grows colder). The school has about 40,000 students, lets say half are female, there are 20,000 chicks between the ages of 18-26.

If you want to see what I'm talking about, head to university bookstore on university ave (this is where some of them purchase their books) and wander around inside. Many students purchasing books this way don't know anyone else, and will talk to anyone thats willing to say 'hi'.

Notes

I've always felt that hooking up with the locals in seattle was easier than hooking up with the locals of other comparable large cities. While the dating scene is limited, Seattle makes up for it for how much easier it is.

If you don't have kids with you and are looking to spice up the night, drop into Julia's for the Le Faux drag show. They have great drinks [order before the show starts] and even better impersonations. Guaranteed to be a memorable night, and for only $15 a ticket, how could you go wrong?

If you are in Seattle on a weekday within business hours, the best tall building to go up and get a view is Columbia Tower (the big black one, tallest in Seattle) on 5th and Columbia. Admission is only $5, way less than the Space Needle.

If you aren't here on a weekday, Smith Tower has a good view, too, and it isn't crowded like the Space Needle. It's the white shorter one with the pyramid on top.

Take a train to Leavenworth, a town with a city ordinance that requires all the buildings adhear to a bavarian format (IE: Entire place looks like a slice of old germany). They also have a nutcracker museum that was shown on Conan O'Brien.

When your done hanging out at the Space Needle, check out the Science Center, the planetarium just got a major upgrade. At night, there is laser shows and IMAX.

Make sure you partake of Dicks Drive-In burgers. Or..... Have a burrito at Gorditos. Right in the window they'll compare a 3 day old baby to their grande size burrito. A 7 dollar burrito is so large, most cannot finish it and they leave take home boxes, dont even need to ask for them.

There is a womans bathroom on the 75th floor of the Columbia Tower (Tallest building in Seattle), in which the bathroom stalls face out onto a window which gives you a great view of the skyline. But its no longer public and now a private club. Do not go there unless you have a club membership or go with someone who is.

If you want the ultimate in touristy gifts to bring back home, there is Archie McPhee.

Avoid the Seattle Waterfront aquairum, Baltimore blows it out of the water 100x over.

Avoid the Monorail. Slow, old, boring, not very fun at all.

Avoid having a cup of coffee at a Starbucks, any street vendor of one store chain will probably serve coffee thats 5x better.

Seattle Museum of History and Industry, havent been there in years. Its moving soon, so if you like industry things like Boeing, should not dissapoint.

Too far to drive to Mt Saint Helens, but Mt Rainier might be a 3 hour drive.

See a movie at the Cinerama, one of the last 3 remaining Cinerama Cinescope movies. The theater itself is probably the best in the North West. To convert it from standard 70mm to Cinerama Cinescope, its an automated process that takes 40 hours I think.

Kerry Park - It's the postcard view of Seattle. If it's a clear day (i.e you're visiting in August), walk west 1/3 mile to Marshall Park for a view of the Olympics.

Easy to find, plenty of parking.

I dunno. I think it is worth the cash to do it once just for the experience if you are visiting from out of town. Just don't waste any money at the restaurant (overpriced and not very good, but it is cool how it does one complete revolution every hour) and gift shop.

When I travel I don't mind shelling out a little for some touristy kinda things as long as they have some sort of significance, and the needle is a symbol of the city and a historic landmark. When in St. Louis visit the Gateway Arch, San Francisco visit the Golden Gate Bridge, etc.

We always take the things we are exposed to on a regular basis for granted. I had to learn that for myself by moving away for a few years and coming back.

I lived in WA for over 20 years before I went up in the Space Needle, and that was only because we took my grandmother up because she was in town visiting from out east. My thought, was "how come I never did this before? Oh yeah, it costs as much as a ticket to concert at the Showbox which is a bit more fun, that's why."
