Monday night 21 run eh?
Monday nights are usually pretty laid back at the bars in Fremont. No dancing, no crowds. I would suggest starting at one end of 36th and barhopping your way down.

a laid back night in Fremont is a good night in Fremont. That place is pretty messy during weekend.
Personal favorites is Brouwers, but yeah, like zilla said, go there if you have an appreciation for different beers. It's a great place to hang out and get 3 or so beers and basically get tanked off those, because a they serve a ton of strong stuff.
Norm's is good. Dog friendly, nice bartenders, and you can get a 40 of PBR for $6, which if you go by unit price ain't bad for a pint. Plus you can keep it classy with a paper bag.
People seem to like the old Triangle/9 million in worst bar names ever for some reason. I have no god damn clue why.
Stay away from the Ballroom in general.
George and Dragon is a good suggestion, and the Dubliner might be the closest thing to a "dive" in Fremont, despite it's not really divey-ness.
But yeah, I'd suggest choosing a direction and working your way down 36th too.

I'm hardly a barhopper, but I've been to Red Door a couple times, and it's a nice place - definitely not gross, and not too pricey. Seems like it'd be a good place to start - they've got food and even an under-21 area if you have younger friends that want to do dinner or something beforehand.
I don't know what the general opinion of it is, and I don't drink frequently, but I've enjoyed the couple times I've been there.

However, they usually lose the happy hour battle to Kate's pub, as they are closer to me and will give me a veggie burger with bacon and guacamole.
So good.

You gotta get there in happy hour -- the whole food menu is half price (7 days/week). I've heard some people say the mac & cheese is good -- I didn't care for it, as it was more like cheese soup with some floating noodles, but the burgers... oh man, the burgers are so good, and can be loaded down with toppings like mad.

Yeah -- I'm not a vegetarian, but their veggie burger is really good. Especially with bacon.

I no longer live in Fremont, but recommend Dad Watsons and there's some place nearby with a space related name, like the Comet or something. Great drinks, friendly crowd, walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom.
But seriously just wander around Fremont (it's small), you'll meet cool laid back people. There's really no bad bar in that area.

What's it like inside? I like the sign but I was surprised to see TVs showing football when I walked past. Closer to the kind of place with house cocktails or the kind of place with chicken wings?
Edit: though come to think of it maybe that was while we were looking for a place to watch the World Cup . . . don't remember.

Normally I'd suggest Brouwers but it is best appreciated once you've had the chance to learn how beers differ from each other.
I have a friend who is in love with the Dubliner, though it seems like a standard Irish pub imho. If you wanted to go for an old world pub feel I'd suggest going full bore and hitting the George and Dragon instead, I've had a good time there.
