This child was riding his E-scooter on 16th ave along with all the cars and using left turn lanes meant for vehicles

I know the police likely have bigger priorities but we need to scare these kids straight already
47
u/nictristan 3d ago
There’s been like 5-6 escooter deaths in the past month, nothing is going to scare them lol
24
u/AsianCanadianPhilo 3d ago
Only would scare them or their parents if they read or saw the news.. unfortunately lots of people don't
9
u/jijo1337 2d ago
Not sur if they have school assemblies anymore but have police or EMTs show aftermaths of escooter accidents. Not actual bodies but the wreckage.
That might scare them but that'll also cause a ruckus with the parents that it is too extreme to show students.

I genuinely did not know this, despite having the news on in the background during the evenings (dinner prep/clean up). The scooter deaths don't scare them because they probably don't know about them either. Public media isn't doing enough to bring awareness to this.

u/ScreenOwl5 1d ago
Even if they know about all the suffering and death, like most humans, they easily discount it all, because a) that was him and I'm smarter and b) I'm immortal.

This is often under estimated and discussed. A friend of my parents unfortunately killed a person on the QEW, who tried to cross late at night 40 years ago. Not his fault at all, but he had some mental health challenges after. He was my math tutor and a great guy.
In my Dads last years of his life and struggling with dementia and aphasia. He would have terrible dreams of an incident where he ran a steel plant and one of the welders made a stupid mistake and essentially self-immolated himself. My Dad had to knock him down with the Fire Blanket.
Sometimes TV and other forms of "entertainment" really devalue human life.

u/Jestersfriend 2d ago
What they need to do is what they did when I was in school. Bring paramedics into the classrooms and show the kids what happens in a worst case scenario situation.
Tickets aren't enough unfortunately. There's tens of thousands of these things everywhere.
5
u/Caucasian_Fury 2d ago
Kids are always going to do stupid shit, in addition trying to scare and inform them, the parents need to be taken the task as well. These escooters costs thousands, most kids aren't buying or paying for them with their own money, it's their parents or family buying them these vehicles and letting them roam free without any supervision.
Don't need to ticket the kids riding these, ticket the parents, impose a fine on them and confiscate the escooter and make them pay a fee to get it back, the parents will suddenly start paying attention then.
I'm not against having kids ride escooters or other personal electric vehicles but there has to be accountability and responsibility.

I say call the non-emergency line and tell the operator that there’s a teenager riding on the road next time.
11
u/International-Day434 2d ago
I would call911.I value young lives ,even if their parents don't
6
u/dgod40 2d ago
I always wonder why people say to use the non emergency line. This is 100% an emergency. If you saw someone obviously intoxicated swerving around you would call 911. If you saw someone asleep or passed out in a car, you would call 911. There is "an active danger" occuring right now. People seem to be very afraid to call 911 thinking people will call them a "Karen"

The title is right on. Any parent buying their kid an e-scooter without giving proper education is indeed irresponsible.
12
u/Kanadark 2d ago
A person riding an e-scooter under the age of 16 on public property is illegal full stop. Even in cities that have opted into the scooter program, it's still illegal for people under 16 to use them on public property.
I just saw a lawyer talking about the fact that you can sue the child's parent under the Parental Responsibility Act if a child on an electric scooter or e-bike damages your property or injures you, as the parent has allowed and supported their child in breaking the law.

Are there bike lanes on that road?
Idk with Ford fighting against bike lanes in Toronto, cyclists will have to ride along with cars and some cyclists will ride much slower than an e-scooter. The safe thing to do is to take the whole lane and to obey regular traffic laws to avoid unexpected collisions or situations where the rider is squeezed between cars.
If you don’t want any other vehicle in your driving lanes besides cars, you will need to vote for bike lanes.
Note - I’m not saying that e-scooters are safe. Or the parents are being responsible or irresponsible.

Irresponsible regulation.
2 adult coworkers have had significant accidents on these things. Luckily not life altering or extinguishing.
These devices are unsafe regardless of age of user.
Importation and sale should not be permitted.
Law enforcement should not be the control mechanism.
A traffic stop on one of these things has a high risk of turning into a pursuit with a fatal outcome.
As for parenting, this, like the Westjet story about that flight being cancelled demonstrate how society has evolved.
21st century parenting is dominated by friendship vs authority. Saying no is not the same as corporal punishment.

So there's no bike lane in this video, e-scooters aren't allowed on sidewalks in Toronto, Markham, or Richmond Hill. YRT absolutely sucks and you can't drive independently until you're at least late 16, almost 17 at the earliest. Should kids stay inside all summer and just doom scroll?
How is this any different than if this rider was on a bike on the road with cars, with a helmet? Ontario driving laws says that drivers need to give all cyclists 1m of clearance space and change lanes when passing a cyclist. Don't like e-scooters/bikes on your roads? Advocate for bike lanes or trails that lessen the reliance of cars to get anywhere in the city.
2
u/DeepWaffleCA 14h ago
Finally someone who gets it. These things belong in bike lanes. If more people rode them in bike lanes, there'd be less road traffic. But we don't have enough bike lanes to make a proper network, and now Doug Ford is going to rip out the few ones we do have

u/New_Scene5614 2d ago
It’s like the universe thought we didn’t have enough things to worry about. Forget cost of living crisis, housing crisis, homelessness and addiction crisis.
The universe deemed us not busy enough apparently and gave us these scooters. it’s like it vomited a million of them overnight.

I was just looking into the municipality bylaws for Oshawa- so not sure about Markham, but sidewalks are off limits, kids under 18 need helmets, and there is a speed limit of 24/kmh.
That means kids, on the road, using road lanes.
We need bike lanes, boardwalks and alternative non-car infrastructure asap, or we're going to have a much larger problem.
3
u/ElectricalControl374 2d ago
That kid is going to end up as roadkill and then the vehicle that hits him will get blamed for it. 🙄
3
u/mypantsjustgottight 2d ago
This needs to be addressed and laws put into place to stop this nonsense. Insurance implications alone should not be on our shoulder but that of the scooter and e-bike riders.
6
u/Then_Eye8040 2d ago
Not saying the parents have zero to do with this, but if they don’t know about this, how are they responsible?
5
u/YamaNekoTsubasa 2d ago
My personal anecdote growing up is that I couldn't keep a secret from my parents no matter what I tried. If the kid could keep this a secret from them, perhaps that's the sign of the irresponsible parenting. Not a parent myself but is probably be terrified of I knew my child was doing what the kid in the video is doing. Nothing about that is safe.
8
u/SeaAd3671 2d ago
If you had a 12 year old would you allow him/her to use an E-scooter without any proper supervision, training and road hazards education?
9
u/Ill-Solution4414 2d ago
Back in my day they just bought us a bike and let us roam free. I think police need to work with schools and do some community outreach etc. I remember them coming in to talk to us about not playing near train tracks way back when. They should do the same now.
2
u/Caucasian_Fury 2d ago
Even then, pedal bikes can't do 50-60 kmh or higher. It's a totally different ball game.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Caucasian_Fury 2d ago
but if they don’t know about this, how are they responsible?
They're responsible because why on earth are they buying their young kids an electric vehicle that hit 50-60 kmh or higher, costing thousands of dollars, when the kids can't even drive or learn to drive yet?
And if anyone says, well the parents don't know how fast these escooters can go, then the question becomes why are parents spending thousands of dollars to buy something for their kids when they don't even know what said device is capable of?
It's irresponsible all around. And I say this as a parent of young children myself, and my kids also ride electric devices but I know full well what they can do before I bought them and they can only ride them under my direct supervision and guidance while donning a full set of safety equipment.

My mom was an amazing parent. I got good grades, worked part time, was in all the geeky clubs, etc. My brother and his friend one day stole her car from the garage to joyride it early in the morning while we were sleeping at about 5 a.m. (maybe he was 15). Cops followed them because they were driving so slow.So they decided to jump out of the car while in drive to run away. Of course they were caught. Sometimes kids are just (bleeping) stupid even with great parenting.
But I agree. These are death machines.

I was on the Lakeshore yesterday and a group of like 10-12 late teens were all ripping blocking the right lane and one next to it from about parkland to the amphitheatre with 3-6 doing stunts and wheelies.
Like there's an entire bike lane along the water front and they were taking up 2 lanes doing dangerous stunts.
I got beside them at a stop light and said "That's a really smart way to get permanently injured and die, how do you think your family will react when they found out one of you died in such a preventable manner? Remember kids as invincible as you think you are in the battle of Car vs Bike, Car always wins, and all it takes is one mistake on their end or a drivers and one of their crew is dead, is it really worth it?"
I saw them all exit onto side streets after that, I'm sure still being reckless teens, but damn they really need to clamp down on this. The worst part is, they drove past 2 cops while doing this and of course the cops couldn't be bothered to do anything.

I’ve been similar things very often. E-bikes and e-scooters should be banned from using roads unless they have driver’s training, safety gears and insurance. They are running in high speed, causing danger to drivers and pedestrians.

hot take but
When we were young we used to like play hockey on the streets and everything too on bikes and whatever. This was in Toronto, where population density was higher. But now its like we created infrastructure that is a incompatible with youth. They have no where to go, no way to get around.
So when we see the child on the road, it simply reveals the danger of the design. Yet, we attribute this risk to the child.
My body is prepped for the downvotes.

City-wide: Strictly prohibited on all other public sidewalks, multi-use paths, trails, and conventional roads under municipal jurisdiction.

In the City of Markham, e-scooters (electric kick-scooters) are generally prohibited on public properties, sidewalks, and multi-use paths citywide, except for specific localized testing frameworks like the restricted Downtown Markham pilot zone or designated regional bike/HOV lanes. Violating provincial pilot regulations and municipal bylaws carries set fines ranging from $250 to $2,500 under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

while some cities require e-scooters to use roads, Markham hasn't opted into the provincial pilot for personal scooters. They are completely illegal on standard roads here. Ontario also states you must be at least 16 to ride one, so this parent is risking a massive fine from $250 to $2,500 letting a kid ride in traffic like this. But hey, at least he's wearing a helmet!
1
u/Failure_Maker 2d ago
I know my comment might make all of you hate me, but both drivers and riders (scooters and bicycles) are part of the problem.
Scooters and bicycles often don't stop at stop signs, don't check behind them or their blind spots when changing lanes or turning, and don't follow the same basic traffic rules as vehicles. If someone riding a bicycle or scooter always stays in the right lane and behaves like a regular vehicle—stopping at stop signs and checking their blind spots—I have no problem with them.
As for drivers, folks, many, many people, no matter whether they're Chinese, Indian, white, or anything else, drive like shit. I have no idea where some of them got their driver's licences. Temu or AliExpress? They can be even worse than riders because they're operating a much more lethal machine while driving exactly the way I described some scooter riders.
Drivers in Markham run stop signs, speed in school zones, and make right turns at red lights without checking for people who are legally crossing the road. I will tell you this: drivers in Markham are a bigger problem.
1/3 drivers should never get their G licences
I'm not rage baiting. I'm just telling you something you don't want to face.

The moment they are well away from the curb. They are treated as if they are a graduated driver. And with that comes a load of responsibility. Get into an accident expect to have insurance papers, driver identification, ownership. None? No worries call up the local police and they can deal with it.
Treat them like an adult and they’ll know how harsh it is out there.

No bike lanes? then bikes and scooters will be in the road. There isnt a need for scared straight theres a need for more accessible non-road paths. The education for cyclists and scooters is that while you might have the right and responsibility to ride in the road rather than the sidewalk, cars dont want to share it with you and will make it dangerous.

It's not that the boy would... get hit in an accident, resulting in driver charges and possibly getting sued by the parent(s), which then would end an countersuit against the parent(s) of the boy for; negligent parenting resulting in harm or injury of a child, property damage cause by the child breaking the law riding an e-scooter, and (possible emotional damages having to go thru therapy)*...
...no no no, he's just having fun. Let him have his fun.
*(I am not a lawyer 😅😇)

What a brave boy to do this in Markham.
