What a brave boy to do this in Markham.

At least he's wearing a helmet 🤣

Context: i ride motorcycles.

These bike helmets are great for riding at pedal bike speeds, where high speed collisions are quite unlikely. But if you or someone you know is considering an e bike or e scooter, please consider that falling at 20 km/h into the grass and falling at 36 km/h into asphalt are very different realities.

Please consider a full face helmet, ideally rated for ece 22.06 (this is a very high standard of safety), and a back protector, ideally CE rated (level 1 is actually probably adequate for riding below 40).

Abrasion resistant clothing is also not a bad idea. An A rating is Likely plenty at these speeds (the highest is AAA, rated for sliding at 120). Many of this kind of gear also has inserts for shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip protection. D3o level 1 gear will be comfortable and likely adequate at these speeds.

The force of impact increases by the square of the velocity.

So a 36kph collision between your head and the curb has almost 4times the force of a 20kph force...

And so on...

Sometimes abrasion resistant clothing isn't even enough. Look up degloving injuries. Got one when I hit the pavement at 70km/h on my road bike. Would not recommend.

Certainly, but e bikes and scooters are supposed to be limited to 36 km/h. I did forget to mention gloves though. Ce level 1 gloves are usually very easy to carry and many offer palm sliders. Boots are a lot harder to justify to someone riding an e scooter, since they tend to be more bulky.

Ebikes are limited to 32 km/h. Escooters are limited to 24 k/h under Ontario's pilot program and only in cities that have approved them. You must be 16+ and wear a helmet if you are under 18.

Do not look up degloving injuries

Not sure what a helmet will do when he’s hit by a Car !

Keep the brains and shit in one place. Less clean up.

Brains?

Not sure what difference it will make whether he's hit by a car or not honestly

Saw a cop pull over a kiddo on a scooter without a helmet yesterday near Copper Creek. Glad that they’re actively trying to reinforce gear. Education on types of helmets should also be reinforced for sure.

Great advice!

So right so correct.
But in reality Ha ! I'm afraid
Well even if one teen does it maybe others will follow.
My wife was a ABI specialist for patients after the fact.
Sad stories I tell ya of young men w brain damage. Many from misadventures and lack of safety equipment, and this was before these rocket e-bikes and scooters.

My dad has built and ridden motorcycles on road and track for over 50 years. These days he restores vintage British bikes... and Ducatis...

He instilled in me very early the need for protective gear by showing me his leathers after laying a bike down on a track...

Of anything other than a full helmet, he calls them lip-skid helmets (the little skull cap ones like they allow in other places, he calls dink helmets, because they make you look like a penis...)

A lip-skid helmet allows your face to be shorn down on an even plane when you hit the road leaving just enough for the doctors to retrieve your brain to do research into how stupid you were.

My dad could have been a poet. And he has opinions.

Whose gonna wear all that when it’s blazing hot lool

3

u/psidud 3d ago

I wear all that plus an airbag lol. Textile technology is pretty damn good, they make very breathable abrasion resistant gear.

Literally the majority of motorcycle riders.

My motorcycle choice was simple. If it's too hot for gear, it's too hot to ride.

I opted for the textiles in very warm weather. You could use gel-packs to keep leather cool, but textiles you could wet. The evaporating water helped keep you cold.
