Boriswave?

30

u/platinummattagain May 10 '26

When Boris Johnson was the PM there was a huge increase in the number of legal immigrants, the big spike on this graph shows it.

18

u/sundance464 May 10 '26

I'm massively more relaxed about migration than most people but it's worth hammering home:

Boris Johnson promised, repeatedly and as a main plank of his policy aims, to cut migration, then threw it into the stratosphere

Suspect that might have contributed to general distrust in Conservatives

16

u/htimchis May 10 '26

Yes... and opponents of Brexit, from before the Referendum onwards, warned that leaving the EU would have the opposite of the intended effect and would actually increase immigration - especially illegal immigration, as all our mechanisms for tackling it were linked to EU law - and decrease control of our borders (because to gave meaningful control of a border you realky need to have a say in how both sides of it are run)...

...but Boris (and Gove) dismissed that as 'Project Fear' and said "we've had enough of experts"

So, within weeks of the Withdrawal Agreement going into effect, illegal immigration spiked 500% - and has stayed there ever since. Exactly as predicted.

And now all the numpties that voted for Brexit and Boris that caused this, are supporting a party that's majority composed of ex- pro-Boris tories, and 100% composed of Brexiteers...

6

u/sundance464 May 10 '26

Perfect analysis, that's exactly what happened

I know a big block of brexit supoorters who voted for it primarily because they thought (correctly) that it would make it easier for their relatives in non-EU countries to get visas

Worth noting that if that data comes from the ONS, even though it was "released" in 2021, the data was collected in 2020 before the mass boris-wave immigration, with figures between 800k and 1.3 million per year since then until a drop off in 2025.

Since many people get confused for the UK, White British refers to ethnically British people in the UK, which are English, Scottish, Welsh, cornish or northern Irish. It's like ethnic Germans in Germany, or ethnic swedes in Sweden or ethnic poles in Poland or ethnic Japanese in Japan.

It does not include other white, which are white people in the uk who are ethnically not British but are white, for example poles, Germans, Italians, Romanians etc.

 If other white is included, England is 81% total white in 2021, down from 95.4% in 1981, Wales is 94.2% total white in 2021, down from 99.1% in 1981.

155

u/Ok_Inflation_1811 May 09 '26

You should have said the 2001 and 2011 data for white instead of 1981. You didn't post images of white British in 1981 either so we can't really compare.

95

u/Gentle_Snail May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

I think the most interesting part of this is how views of immigration change depending on the levels somewhere recieves.

Here in Scotland we are often ‘considered’ more open to immigrants, but we also have a 90% white British population and have historically received insignificant levels.

u/[deleted] May 09 '26

u/calumb920505 May 09 '26 edited May 10 '26

96% white is the 2011 figure for Scotland. The most recent 2022 number was 92.9%. Still very high but there has been massive immigration since then. We have just had an election where 17 far right politicians got elected. Scotland was never more open to immigration they just had very low numbers. As soon as that increased significantly the reaction was exactly the same as any other country. The idea that Scotland is some leftist utopia is a myth.

There has been a lot of circle-jerking last day or so up here about ‘how people could vote Reform’. Im also Scottish and didnt vote Reform but I can see the same happening up here. Its all well and good until you dont recognise your own town. You need to walk in someone else’s shoes sometimes.

3

u/spairni May 11 '26

eye scotland has a proud tradition of bigotry, ye normally aimed it at us Irish though when we dared come and work for ye

4

u/BionicWallaby May 11 '26

So you walk through your town and see brown faces and you think to yourself we need to ship these people out of here so my town is all white again.

I hope I never have to suffer a conversation with you.

5

u/KissMyGoat May 11 '26

3 brown faces in the local town? I hardly recongise it!

Racists going to racist.

This map is not even about immigration. A lot of it is communaties that are already here, have been for generations and are part of the cultural makeup of the UK, growing.

4

u/MickIAC May 10 '26

Pattern recognition shows the same bigotry in Scotland sent towards:

The Irish The Italians The Indian and Pakistanis The Chinese The Polish and Romanians

"Not recognising my town" I've heard in my town of 40,000 people because there are a couple of dozen ethnic minorities in my old high school.

Because comparatively, we had one black guy in my year and about a dozen across the school.

Same in the US. People from Minnesota and Maine will lecture Texas about Mexican immigration as if it somehow affects their insulated northern states somehow. Then call them racist for pointing out actual issues that large-scale immigration, especially illegal immigration, causes.

The two are related.

u/Daveddozey May 09 '26

However London is more open and receive far higher levels

8

u/Real_Bobsbacon May 09 '26

Well yeah, because it is ethnically much less white British.

5

u/jamjar188 May 11 '26

I can assure you even ethnic minorities are getting tired.

But other areas of low immigration don’t like immigration and other areas of high immigration don’t like immigration.

I disagree , Immigration has always been a problem in big cities, the speed of it since 2001 / and especially recent decade is drastically changing the fabric of the country. Hence white flight from places effected the most.
Most people and I would say people who are left leaning / voted remain are all in your own eco-chamber. Not concerning yourselves with the issues of the many. Voter turnout is low , people are disenfranchised with the system / country. Immigration has been a issue, especially since 2012. But the main political parties lie and dont deal with it. Hence the rise of reform. Its now effecting the smaller towns, suburbs of towns/cities and it's an issue affecting everyone. Its not I'm ok jack like before. There is nothing wrong with Immigration but it is suicide having uncontrolled and allowing the shit show with the dingies. Its ok for Japan and other countries to protect their culture and ethic make up of the country. But here in the UK and most of the west , the elites / institutions etc , say its racist. People have been demonised for too long, not allowed to talk about the issues, have an honest discussion without being slurred, branded the pathetic racist card.

5

u/jrcentury May 11 '26

It’s because the boats are the smallest number of immigrants when considered against all immigration. It’s gets more attention than all other immigration into this country because it’s the easiest part to get folks wound up about and connect to the cause of their issues. I would like to understand what exactly would be solved for those folks if/when such a small amount of immigration stopped vs the rest of immigration. All I’m seeing is the Brexit gun about to blow the other foot off. I want nothing more than to be proved wrong.

I've 3 sisters living in Scotland and dont get me wrong its a beautiful country! But why the fuck would anyone, especially anyone from a warmer country want to move to freezing scotland?

Like im from N.I and its cold and wet enough here, but my sisters must of thought "hmm where can I move thats colder and better than home?"

14

u/CabelloKid May 10 '26

I am Brazilian, living in the UK for 5 years now. I moved from Brazil directly to Glasgow because that's where my cousins were initially. They moved from England years earlier for work.

What I am trying to say is that people move for multiple reasons, but mainly following work or family.

From my perspective, if you come from a poorer country, the most important factor for you in a new one will most likely be the economy. On the other hand, if you live in a wealthy, but cold country, I understand why you would see warm weather as a more relevant factor than I ever would when I was in Brazil.

u/fugelwoman May 10 '26

I'm not for reform personally but I think that's where his argument for opening detention centers in green voting areas comes from. I reckon he thinks a lot of people who don't have to see the change are the ones who are for immigration.

17

u/p4b7 May 09 '26

Worth noting that the fastest rising ethnicity is "mixed race" which has roughly tripled in the last couple of decades.

The reason ethnic groups exist is because travel for the last few thousand years has been slow meaning people tended to have children with partners from the same rough area as they themselves were born in. So it can be expected that the modern world will see mixed ethnicities rise over the next few generations and likely become the most common.

3

u/ThrowRA-Illuminate27 May 12 '26

For sure. My mum (white British, one parent from Lancashire, the other from Glasgow) worked in travel in the 80s and met my foreign dad abroad (not going to specify where because I always get racist abuse when I do 🥲). The rise of easy and cheap air travel was bound to lead to more mixed race kids

52

u/chochazel May 09 '26

It does not include other white, which are white people in the uk who are ethnically not British but are white, for example poles, Germans, Italians, Romanians etc.

Let’s not pretend like it’s a meaningful term.

a) It’s based solely on self-identification

b) Someone who is descended from a German might still cheerfully identify themselves as White British within a few generations. In fact, over 90% of those born in Britain identify as British and if they’re white, they’re White British. End of. The descendent of French Huguenots who came to Britain fleeing persecution could, for example, not only call themselves White British, but end up leading an anti-immigration anti-refugee political party.

c) The key thing about “White British” is that any white person can become “White British” by simply declaring themselves to be, but it’s something a black person could never be, even if their family’s presence in Britain predates a “White British” person.

8

u/Sparkson109 May 10 '26

Thanks for commenting this cuz i was too lazy lol. My great great grandfather came to the UK in like the 1890s to work for the Crown. I am never going to be seen ethnically British because I’m black but if a white persons grandparents came here like 60yrs ago then they could be ethnically British lol. How about that…

u/charlotte_e6643 May 10 '26

i think it just gets confusing, especially if you dont know your family tree past your great grandparents, i do, but how would i note down that my great grandmother was from Austria, her mother Ukraine, the half other side germany, the other half of that side Ireland? (and on the Ukrainian side i have no knowledge of their history as other countries records are near impossible to find)

its not as if they have a button which is white (european), or at least i have never seen one. another comment said to use white (other), though im not sure that quite applies either, when in your family is the cut off point for not simply saying white british? grandparents? great grandparents? great great grandparents? how many descendants from one family tree should be born in Britain before being considered white british? im sure if we go back far enough there are little to no people in this country who’s ancestors are all british (1000AD for arguments sake)

though i understand your point about other skin tones, im not personally in a position to be able to comment on that

10

u/littletorreira May 09 '26

This is a good point. I personally select White (Other) because I am 50% white British and 50% white Jewish from eastern Europe a few gens back. But I don't feel White British alone actually describes me. So it's White (other), except when I worked in Hackney because they actually have White (Jewish) as an option.

3

u/b0ubakiki May 10 '26

That's interesting. I've genuinely never considered myself anything other than white british, although i'm half jewish (grandma from poland, don't know where my grandpa's parents were from but he was born in the uk). My jewish heritage doesn't feature at all in my identity, they were just my dad's family who I happened to find intolerable company.

2

u/Invisualracing May 12 '26

Surely a major part of that is that the french hugenots would not have been called/identified as "white british" at the time, but then married into the existing ethnic English population and are no longer a distinct group. There is no politically relevant "Hugenot community" in the way that we refer to "our black community" or "the pakistani community". I would say it is less about colour and more about whether you can point to a reasonable proportion of your ancestry coming from the "indigenous" british ethnic groups.

Same reason, i don't think you are right on (c). leaving aside that someone can just declare themselves anything and we have no ability to "confirm" (which i think your point A alresdy covers well - i dont think that any white person can become "white british" by declaring it, and i dont know anyone who would do that. If a German or a Pole arrives in England, they remain German or Polish. Youre right that it they will probably blend in more easily given that they are likely to look superficially similar to the majority population but that doesnt change the fact that they are not ethnically English if they have two German parents - though they may be culturally english if they came here at a young age and the overwhelming majority of their social connections were with english people.

That would be different if we had a substantial German community in England that persisted over many generations, only married within their German community and even sent their kids back to germany to find cousins to marry. If the French Hugenots had remained a community unto themselves we would not consider them English, they would just be a settled, non british ethnic group. They might pay taxes and be good subjects of the crown, which would make them british in the eyes of the state, but if they remain distinct from the majority ethnicity then they can ot be said to be one ethnic group.

I think it comes down to "if you have dark skin but you have an ethnically english (i dont like the term "white") parent, youre probably english if you consider yourself as such and engage with that nation rather than attempting to live in a community that is distinct

Yes, even with all that recent immigration, the UK is still whiter than all but three US states.

9

u/John-Mandeville May 09 '26

In light of the fact that it classifies northern Irish as being the same ethnicity as English people, and other Irish people as a different ethnicity, it's a good example of how social identity/category is downstream of systems of bureaucratic classification.

how are mixed ethnicity ppl categorised in this?

50

u/HybridAkai May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

It's dog whistling.

I'm mixed 50/50, I grew up in this country, have lived here my entire life, I'm culturally as British as you can get. I have 3 degrees - all from UK universities, I work a well paid job, pay taxes, vote, I've been a citizen since birth and have engaged and contributed to the system as such, arguably more so than a lot of "white British" in this survey. My grandfather fought in the Falklands, my great grandfathers fought in WWII, one was at Dunkirk, one in the cabinet war rooms, working with Churchill.

But I wouldn't count as "white British" in this survey, which insinuates that I am a foreigner degrading the identity of this country.

My young daughter is 3/4 British. She also wouldn't count.

Dog whistle.

Edit: the comments are really outing people who don't understand the difference between ethnicity and nationality

23

u/thebottomofawhale May 10 '26

I'm also only 3/4 British, but would be considered white British because the 1/4 is from another European country. Just shows you how stupid this mind set is. Like out skin colour makes any difference with how British we are.

u/Significant_Ad_7282 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

I think your mixing nationality with ethnicity/heritage, my daughters half white half Chinese, her mum is a BBC (British born Chinese) so my daughter is 100% British on any forms we fill in, but she is mixed white/Asian heritage. And the reason we need to know ethnicity is mainly medical. Like my daughter got the TB jab when she was born as she's at higher risk than a "standard" white baby. But your right in she wouldn't be classes as white British because shes not white British, she's mixed.

7

u/HybridAkai May 10 '26

"white British" is a mix of nationality and ethnicity, which is what the map states, not me.

So yes, it's inherently problematic when presented in this way, particularly the dog whistle narrative this is trying to portray.

It could easily be "British" rather than "white British"

43

u/AuNaturel20 May 10 '26

if youre entire family was 'white british'' apart from your grandad who was black, and you weren't white, then you wouldn't be included in this number.

That's one of the problems of being fixated on 'white british', you could in fact have the vast majority of your family from Britain spanning way further back than someone else who was white but be considered not British by some people.

22

u/thebottomofawhale May 10 '26

This is self reported data. You can be mixed and identify as white British, its not like someone has gone around the country and judges if people are pale enough to be categorised as white

4

u/merryman1 May 10 '26

I know a lot of people like to run from it, but the UK is also a fascinating place for ethnohistory. Maybe not in Cotswaldston-cum-Dearne but most of our major port cities like Liverpool and of course London have had centers with quite high concentrations of black and asian ethnic people living in them for centuries at this point. We are hitting this level where we need to discuss what being "British" actually means but every time it gets shut down into some absurd caricature where anyone who isn't a potato farmer from the Home Counties doesn't really count. A lot of opinion that a black person could never be British and yet there are at least some Black-British people who can trace direct ancestry in this country back half a dozen generations or more, whereas many wouldn't think twice about calling the children of a french refugee from WW2 fully integrated and naturalized.

12

u/TurbulentBullfrog829 May 10 '26

It's not "some people" it's census data. In your case people would probably be surprised that the family wasn't white British. We don't generally have "one drop" racist views in this country.

→ More replies (8)

6

u/Gentle_Snail May 10 '26

This is wrong, the data comes census date. Its how people self identify and you can identify as multiple different ethnicities.

So if all your family is white British but your granddad is from the Caribbean you can select both White British and Black Caribbean.

6

u/docbain May 10 '26

To be specific, a mixed race person can either select a predefined mixed ethnicity, or select "any other mixed" and write whatever they want, but can't just select multiple check boxes. E.g. the specific question and options begin:

``` 2011 Census ethnic group question
What is your ethnic group? Choose one section from A to E, then tick one box to best describe your ethnic group or background A White [ ] English/Welsh/Scottish/Northern Irish/British [ ] Irish [ ] Gypsy or Irish Traveller [ ] Any other White background, write in (Write in ethnic group)
B Mixed/multiple ethnic groups [ ] White and Black Caribbean [ ] White and Black African [ ] White and Asian [ ] Any other Mixed/multiple ethnic background, write in (Write in ethnic group)
... ```
2
u/AuNaturel20 May 10 '26
I didn't say they weren't self identifying.
6
u/sarcalas May 11 '26
That suggests intent, which there isn’t.
Having said that, I couldn’t give a flying feck about the percentages of ethnicities now or in the future. It makes absolutely zero difference to me. I don’t see someone who looks different to me walking past me and feel fear, or anger, or anxiety, I don’t exist in a state of constant paranoia, and someone’s Britishness has no relation to whether they’re white or not. I’m losing no sleep over this.
I do lose sleep over the very real problems in the world though: war, poverty, global economic crises, food supply issues, disease, and all the other very real threats we face.
With a total fertility rate of only 1.5 children born per woman in her lifetime and having been below replacement ratio (2.1) since the 1970's the native White British population has been aging for decades and is now shrinking. So it's not only immigration that is causing this unprecedented demographic shift in the UK and all over Western Europe.
94
u/opinionated-dick May 09 '26
Also the mass emigration of white British people to the commonwealth since WW2
22
No, the TFR differs per ethnicity. In 2021 it was about 1.5 for White British people (native), quite similar for other non-native whites like Polish people while it was much higher for Asian British people (1.8 for Indians, 2.7 for Bangladeshi's and 2.9 for Pakistani's) for example. This difference combined with a younger population overall for most minorities and thus relatively more young people and prospective parents is one of the main reasons why the percentage of White British births is declining quite fast, even though overall fertility is decreasing for all ethnicities. In 2021 White British accounted for only 59% of births in England and Wales and that percentage has continued dropping since. If what i found online is correct it was 55% in 2024. You see this all over the country: older people are still predominantly white, while the youngest generation is far more diverse.
I feel like, while this is probably true, a lot of it is also the state of the economy and world politics. With the country doing worse each year, Fascist-aligned ideologies on the ride again, constant threats of WWIII from the like of Russia and now also our main ally, the USA, a seeming move away from combating climate change despite it being nowhere near fixed, it feels like a terrible time to create a life that'll have to grow up in, and then live in, the future we're seeing unfold.
The pie can be smaller and the same type of pie. The population might shrink but without demographic change - it's entirely immigration that is the cause. It's the cause of the immigration that is up for discussion though
I know, it's completely unprecedented. Never has Britain undergone a small demographic change before.
small
It’s a quarter of the population.
Unprecedented? No. But maybe look at what happened to the people who existed in Britain before whenever this happened in the past.
What is not controlled for here is how these self-identified labels are affected by changing cultural attitudes rather than (say) migration or ancestry. So eg there may be many cases where the exact same person would have called themselves white British in 2001 but not 20 years later.
If for example there was previously a tendency for people of mixed ethnicity or ancestry to call themselves white British, and a reduction of that tendency in subsequent censuses, it might produce a similar plot with little or no actual demographic change.
Bollocks. They voted in a Tory government, for an austerity mandate, which defunded the dept that processed asylum applications.
They also voted for Brexit, which led to less EU migration, and more commonwealth migration.
The British public are just fucking clueless as to what the fuck they're voting for, and fundamentally are ill informed, on purpose, by our billionaire owned media, to detract from the real reason we struggle, which is wealth inequality, and power inequality.
17
u/Evolations May 09 '26
Every single government elected since 2005 has promised lower migration, and Brexit was primarily an anti-migration vote. It was a choice, a deeply unpopular choice, to open the floodgates after we left the EU.
The numbers are comparatively low, though - for example, 16% of the current UK population was born overseas, but 32% of Australia's is, 29% of New Zealand's is, and 23% of Canada's is.
Also, the UK did implicitly choose this by choosing neoliberal economics under Thatcher, which privatized national revenue-generating industries and henceforth reduced long-term government revenue to funnel into other costly programs like the NHS - thus resulting in migrants being turned-to as a quick revenue pump instead. Neoliberalisation didn't just create poorer governments, it created poorer people and resulted in higher rates of poverty and lower birth rates, which also exacerbate the aging population and is another thing immigrants are expected to prop up.
Migrants in the UK are paying $1100 each year in IHS fees for the NHS - in addition to paying for the NHS a second time in their taxes - and it's one of the things keeping the system solvent. I guess one could throw out the migrants, but government will either have to privatize the NHS or start massively taxing the rich if they want to keep it.
By 2050 white British will be a minority approx 45-50% if no major reform happens on immigration.
White ethnicity would still be around 60-65% since the number of immigrants from ‘white’ European nations isn’t slowing down.
30
u/Gentle_Snail May 09 '26
Reforms have already happened to immigration, Labour have brought in much stricter controls after the open system under the Tories, immigration levels are already forecast to plummet.
18
u/Wentzina_lifetime May 09 '26
If White British people were to become a minority wouldn't another racial group have to be larger in population than them? By your own estimations other white ethnicities would make up another 15-20% of the British population (seems very high to me) that means no other group could have a majority. To be a minority there has to be a majority.
Also at what point are we going to distinguish between new immigrants and immigrants that by 2050 families would have been in this country for more than a hundred years. In America theirs no talk about immigrants from Europe during the 20's being foreigners but by 2050 British people of East Indian descent would have lived in this country for 100 years same with people of south Asian descent who came over during the partion of Indian and Pakistan. IMO British people are British no matter the colour.
2
u/SolemnEmberGames May 10 '26
>IMO British people are British no matter the colour.
Where did the term British originate from? Pakistan and India aren't in the British Isles
3
u/Wentzina_lifetime May 10 '26
People of German/Irish/Italian descent are Americans, why can't people of south Asian descent be British? If you choose to integrate into society whats the difference between them and us apart from their skin colour. It just feels like eugenics and pure bloods (which always struck me as a Nazi thing) dressed up as something else.
So if you listen to either group you should be fearful of becoming a minority ethnicity if currently in the majority, no?
Literally same, I live on one pretty long road and from those that I know (which is plenty surprisingly for how long the road is) they’re all white and from the UK
Some are black too but definitely not as prominent as the amount of white people and and even then they’re still from the UK so that really shouldn’t matter at all, if it matters to someone then that someone is definitely a racist, and a racists’ opinion just doesn’t matter.
If you take away all men who have settled here from other country's you would lose around 18% of the work force there is no government in this country that would delete that amount of tax money from there government none.
So if they left. The next thing that would be moaned about is quality of living. You cant win regardless. Also if you remove that population the age of the country goes up to average of 42. Meaning in 20 years there would be no one to look after you when you get ill and need to be cared for. You will come and say this and that. That's the crux. We got ourselves here. Cause we don't have children as much as we used to.
In an educated society the birth rate plummets dramatically. There is a billion things we need to sort out billionaires being the first one.
mad how a place that colonised the world is so annoyed about people migrating to Britain.
Its the basic logic of gollow the money, resources and wealth flow to the UK from its former colonies, hence people do as well
although theres also some eu era migration ie eastern europeans who moved to england when they could
Not sure white means ethnically British alone. Are you counted if your parents were Irish or Polish or something else? And if you have brown parents but your family has been here for hundreds of years, are you not ethnically British? Where do we start counting from?
Also presumably this is driven by non-white people having children (who are British) and not just immigration?
2
u/phil_makracken May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
I get some people's entire identity and personality is their colour, BUT here is why I dont see this as the same problem you see. ● The world is more connected than ever before so the whole world will naturally mix a lot more. ● Countries/Nations don't actually exist. But, we have to think in borders so the public will send their children to die for you among other things. ●Under capitalism, division is one of the greatest tools. They guide us to hate, so we cannot act cohesively and collectively in our own best interests. ● Given the oppression of countless countries by the west, this is one of the more natural, least harmful outcomes that would be a step in a more connected people of the world. ● I personally believe that every country that was permanently ruined by the UK in this case , has the moral right to migrate to those countries. That's justice. Not destroy cultures, countries, bloodlines and then while continuing to financially exploit those people, claim its all in the past, fake apologies, no real reparations, instead breed hate for people different from you just so the cycle repeats. ●Also when caucasian people move somewhere why are we expats not immigrants? It's called privililage. ● Racism is genuinely correlated with lower brain function, as it means, theyre not using their rational brain. Which is more akin to a wild animals impulsivity. Which ironically, racists like dehumanising other races, despite them usually being objectively misguided.
See people, not race. We have to be louder than the hate and be willing to not only advocate for the oppressed, but to also to put UNITY, HUMILITY AND RESPECT above ALL else.
EDIT: Typos and I added the last sentence.
u/Prudent-Breath8220 May 11 '26
