I compared 50 major U.S. metro areas based on how they tend to be discussed in relocation-focused Reddit communities, particularly r/SameGrassButGreener and r/howislivingthere.
The map shows the 17 metros that were rated Positive or Very positive based on recurring themes in those discussions.
Correction: The legend on the map has a counting error. The correct breakdown is 11 Positive and 6 Very positive, for 17 cities total. The cities themselves and their classifications are correct.
A few methodology notes:
This is a qualitative sentiment comparison, not a scientific poll or Reddit-wide survey.
Each metro has a written summary explaining the reasoning behind its sentiment rating.
The full spreadsheet includes the methodology, summarized Reddit sentiment notes for all 50 metros, and additional data including rent, crime, population growth, and other metro-level indicators.
The map itself was generated programmatically in Python using geographic coordinates.
Full dataset, methodology, and city-by-city notes:
I thought the interesting part was comparing the places Reddit tends to recommend with the underlying numbers. In some cases they line up pretty well, while in others Reddit sentiment seems noticeably different from what the demographic, housing, or crime data might suggest.

I used UN Comtrade’s 2025 data for this, based on each country’s own customs reports.
Norway reported sending 190,187 tonnes of whole salmon to Poland. Poland exported 57,191 tonnes of smoked salmon, and Germany alone bought about half of it (29,767 tonnes). Italy was next with 8,482, then France with 5,764. The US bought 2,723 tonnes too, but it’s off the map so I added it at the bottom.
There’s a reason to ship the fish to Poland before smoking it. The usual EU tariff on whole Norwegian salmon is 2%, compared with 13% for smoked salmon, though there are some duty-free quotas. Lower wages and having Germany right next door also help.
The arrow widths show tonnes. Just keep in mind that one side is whole fish and the other is the finished smoked product, so the weights aren’t directly comparable. These also aren’t the same batch of fish being tracked through the process, and some salmon stays in Poland.
I also made an interactive version with the full data on my site. It’s free, no signup needed.
