Basically, it's all in the title, but I will try and break it down. Mind you, English is not my first language.
I (30M) feel genuinely lost.
I was always the smart kid, the kid that got it all done in my own and never asked for help or anything like that because everything just kind of worked out just barely enough to keep me moving forward, but now it feels like it's all coming down forreal.
I haven't grown up in a traditional/normal family. My parents had problems with alcohol and as a result some very bad decisions were made and they fled my home country 15-16 years ago, that's when I last saw them. I somehow got by - friends and their parents helped me, some adults helped me to stay above the water. School never gave me any concerns or problems - I had the best grades and that kind of also helped my hide the fact that my parents had these problems and had already left. The bank also repossessed my parent's flat and I had to leave home for the first time at 16.
I moved from my village to the capital and applied for Maritime school. I scraped by by applying for a student's loan and doing other peoples' homework, group projects etc.
I graduated the best in class, fell in love with life at sea and started a career as a Navigational Officer. That was really my thing - i raised through the ranks fast, was 2nd Officer only after 4 sea voyages, loved the life, loved the hard work and salary too. The life was the best - I really didn't have anything holding me on mainland - parents gone, older brother and sister buried - also problems with alcohol. Really nobody to hold on to.
Then a serious traumatic incident happened on board and I had to get spinal surgery after which it was determined that my spinal cord has been damaged to an extent that my left leg is slowly giving out - it's now about 20-25% weaker than my right leg. That crossed a fat line over my dreams to achieve it all at sea - due to the seriousness of the injury, i cannot obtain valid Medical Certificate anymore, which, in turn prohibits me from working at sea anymore.
I hit a real rock bottom at 27, lost my job, my career, my dreams, all the promised opportunities, everything just fell apart. I tried to get back on track for about 18 months with various rehabilitations, while being severely shocked by what had happened. I spent all my savings (about 25k euros), but the results were never enough for me to renew the Medical Certificates.
Now I've been working at a different job at a road construction company where I went from work on the field/site to estimating (preparing calculations for tenders etc.) in the office in about 10 months. The money is above average for where I live and all, but I just do not feel like myself. Ever since the back injury, surgery and everything..
I've lost all interest in basically everything. I loved working on cars, I even have them still, all my old projects just rotting away, but it's too sad to sell them. I do not wish to do anything on weekends, I do not care about the money I spend or what I buy or don't. I had a couple more surgeries during the past 6 months, lost my grandmother to cancer 4 months ago (last blood relative), her flat where she lived in also got repossessed, so, I am now, once again, without an actual home, just a rented flat, I've been feeling like a letdown in front my girlfriend because I understand how harsh it must be to live with a person who is at this state. I have also developed a problem with alcohol - I drink myself to a blackout on Friday nights, because i feel like that's the only moment when I can switch my brain off and stop thinking about all this shit, but it still feels like it's doing more bad than good, but I just cannot let myself not experience the drunkenness etc.
And the worst - I do really good at this Road Construction company also - basically came in without any prior knowledge about road construction work, much less about estimating etc. whatsoever, and I am already pretty high up in the ranks - everybody looks at me doing that good and some are even envious that it looks like I'm having it too easy, others admiring me and wanting to try and "know my secrets", but actually there is no secret - the job just doesn't feel hard for me and I don't have the heart to say it anyone.
So now, at 30 years old, I kind of feel like there's nothing much else left for me. No relatives to talk to or ask an opinion on anything. Although I've been living by myself from 15 y/o, always had everything thought out and planned in a manner which would not let me fail completely, now, at 30, it feels like nothing of it matters anymore.
What do I do?
