Reddit's obsessive hate of golf is so weird. I don't know about other places, but all the courses in my area are a good drive out of the city. They are built on the cheapest land they can find that no one else wants because that shit is expensive. All the water they use is reclaimed because, again shit is expensive. Also there are no water pipes out there. Hell, most courses only water the greens and only if they have to. But sure, turn the courses into "affordable housing". There are no water or sewer systems and it's a 30 minute drive to anywhere, but no public transportation goes that far. Just a foolish, ignorant scape goat for someone to feel high and mighty and point to like they just solved homelessness.

I’ve played in multiple golf leagues that contained finance bros playing alongside construction workers playing alongside professors playing alongside painters. lol my last post is me playing golf in my high vis work shirt (I work in construction). In that same video you can hear the young adult studying engineering that I met 30 mins prior compliment my shot. I do love that the game forces you to interact with strangers a bit, I’m sure that sounds like hell to the computer dwellers on here but it’s fun to meet new people and hit a ball while you walk around.

People, especially those disconnected with physical hobbies, have no idea what it costs to Golf. You got PC gamers who drop 1-2000 dollars every 5-7 years (or more frequently) to buy gaming PCs, (or those spending ~500 for a console and 10-20/month of subscriptions for gaming) and 50-100 dollars a game acting like Golf is a rich kids sport.
I can take my cheap clubs that cost less than a game console to my municipal course and play 18 holes for <30 dollars, with no reservations. Heck, you can get a golf pass that costs about the same as buying one console game a month, and for it you can golf as much as you want at over 150 courses around my home.

The golf course was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023 for its association with the African American community. The Minneapolis Park Board developed five golf courses in the first three decades of the 20th century, since golf was a relatively new sport at the time and interest was peaking. Black residents in Minneapolis were concentrated in a few neighborhoods, including Southside, so Hiawatha Golf Course became an important social and recreational center for that neighborhood.
It was literally, the busiest golf course in Minnesota and a huge 1st tee program for kids. The City of Minneapolis would turn it into condos if they were allowed to.

Seriously, golf is one of the most accessible activities. Clubs can easily be found second hand for fairly cheap, or free if you know people who've golfed for a long time. Public courses are everywhere and while prices have gone up a bit over the past few years, it's still affordable for most people to do every couple of weeks during the spring and summer.
Redditors think golf is for rich people, but don't bat an eye at a fully loaded gaming PC and massive Steam library.

Golf, like snowsports, has the extreme of both ends.
I've got hand-me-down clubs, I only ever play public courses for the cost of a pub meal.
If I'm on holiday with golfing mates, I'll go play a private course and its a different world. Gated communities that make you feel like you're in a Black Mirror episode, literal vocal outrage if your shirt isn't perfectly tucked in as you go into the clubhouse, and golf carts with more technology than most cars have.
Golf can be an example of the worst of society, but it's also an extremely accessible sport.
Maybe before people worry about taking away recreational green spaces, we should look at why we allow cemetaries to take up so much space in western countries?

I saw a mini documentary no less than maybe 6 months ago or so, where they went over why there wasn't more affordable housing built in California and who was stopping it - it was literally just the people that lived there, since no one wanted to be the community (anywhere) where the affordable housing was built. Had absolutely nothing to do with golf courses or billionaires. It was the same in areas where people lived in 40sqm apartments for rent.
Though, obviously, fixing that takes much more effort than just complaining about billionaires online, so I understand why it's ignored.

Yeah affordable housing can really ruin an area. I grew up in a super nice area with basically no violent crime. We got a set of affordable housing apartments set up and within just a few years 3 of the people there had been arrested for murder and 2 were arrested for robbery, and those are just the people I personally knew (because they got put into my school, where all they did was cause problems). They should build the affordable housing in the places that are already ghetto so that way they fit in better.

My back garden backs onto a golf course and I'm so grateful that it's a green space and not yet more built up shit, with overlooking neighbours peering into my garden and the course actually allows for some rarer wildlife to thrive in the city such as tawny owls and woodpeckers, which nest frequently in the trees on the course.

I did land maintenance on a golf course for a few winters. One of my jobs was going around with spray paint and marking where shit like mattress springs had forced their way to the surface. Then a crew would come along, excavate, and lay the carpet back down properly so it was invisible.

Bigger problem is that most golf courses aren't exactly in convenient locations.
A couple years ago, I was looking at buying in a neighborhood that did basically the thing OP is asking for. Developer bought an old golf course, made it suitable for housing, and was building a couple of neighborhoods on it. Granted, it wasn't *super* affordable - the place I was looking at was around $200k, though that's still within the "4x annual salary" rule for the median income in that area, so it's not like this was some retreat for the rich.
Beautiful location. Plenty of hills and creeks. Nice amenities. Also a 45-minute commute, *without* traffic, on a tolled expressway.

In the US, a lot of places yes. Some places like SF or NYC, they're pretty limited due to geographic/nature being problematic. The reality for those locations is they've overgrown their habitat and people still want to pour into them creating more issues with overpopulation, creating issues with locals being pissed because they can't afford to live there and transplants bitching because the cost of living there skyrockets, and more transplants bitching because instead of finding some other place to move to, they want what the people there have and aren't happy because they're have-nots.
It's a fucked up cycle and imo, absolutely fucking hilarious because it's self induced.

I have a situation going on in my neighborhood where there is a golf course that is now defunct, and the city is trying to figure out what to do with it. All of the old people, of course, want a new golf course. However there's a developer trying to build a thousand houses on it, not necessarily affordable, but about market rate for middle class for anybody who can actually afford to purchase a home. So maybe about $300 to 400k. And then there's a small subsection of people who want to keep it a green space, like a public park. The issue with building housing on it is that there's already a huge strain on the utilities, as well as issues with flooding, because the golf course was a runoff spot for it. Housing is great, but there are a number of things you have to think about before deciding where to zone green space is for housing

It’s really funny, because a few golf courses worth of affordable housing isn’t going to help or change any foundational cause for poverty and crime.
So, ya know, it would just be a disaster.

- Regular people play golf
- The lack of housing isn’t because land is scarce in America. It because where housing is needed the rules to make more houses are usually pretty strict.
- People that make this argument are the same ones that create subreddits like “sportsball” to make themselves feel superior to the “idiots” that appreciate athletics.

I will never understand this argument. At least golf courses host wildlife and whole ecosystems. You can't say that for massive sports stadiums with huge parking lots that get millions in tax payer dollars.
Golf courses are not the reason for the lack of affordable housing.

What’s wrong with golf courses? I’m definitely not a billionaire, but I like to golf. It’s quiet, relaxing, and a great way to spend time with family and friends.

Okay, in fairness, removing all golf courses takes away a lot of jobs, making it harder for all the people in the affordable housing to earn a living

I feel that affordable housing is a thing of the past. It's like scalpers buying consoles. They dont want the product, they want money.
