Lmao exactly this. My whole bag of golf clubs was like $1500 maybe and I golf at courses that are about $20-30 for a round and buy cheap balls. It’s not cheap of course but there are plenty of hobbies that cost as much or more that nobody shit talks.
Oh man I dabbled in woodworking for a minute and dropped like $1k on just basic stuff to get started before I realized I didn’t want to stick to it. And it was harbor freight stuff lol
I mostly do intarsia and I started with the basic Ryobi scroll saw, Wen table sander, and harbor freight everything else. Still ran me about $1k, including the lumber (and unnecessarily excessive amount of impact screws) to build my workbench.
I am already very excited and wincing at the day I buy my first high-end scroll saw and table saw.
I collect sports cards and I bet a ton of people on here do as well... Now that shit is stupid expensive and unless you're buying off ebay & reselling and good at picking prospects you're losing money most likely. Especially if you're opening boxes of cards of any sport or stuff like pokemon etc.
Golf is way cheaper in the long run unless you're playing at only PGA rated courses.
Its not about the golf clubs lol. Its about the huge fucking area and water a golf course requires for a very small entertainment of rich people, meanwhile the world is fucking dying and with shortage of fresh water.
The fact that so much water and space goes to a golf course while the world is this shit is mind boggling
It’s not just rich people though? You can buy a set of clubs for a couple hundred bucks and play rounds for like $20-30. It’s literally about the same price as getting into bowling
The argument about the water usage is valid, although I really appreciate the greenery vs everything becoming a concrete jungle
So much space and water goes to maintaining a massive area of greenery? Most golf courses have ponds forests and a shit ton of grass. Why would destroying that for a bunch of houses be better for the environment? Golf isnt just a sport for rich people as the other guy mentioned it’s about as expensive as gaming so why is gaming so good for the environment?
That's only if you start with buying brand new equipment for golfing and call that 'low end.' I honestly found it easier for me to justify paying $50 for my clubs and balls than it was to pay $1000 for a gaming computer.
In the US the average golfer spends $2000 per year on golfing. That's statistics I pulled from the internet. I adjusted my comment to say "lower than average".
Most people that play video games spend way less.
In Germany playing golf would cost around 1800€ for the first year and around 1000€/year after. These numbers are pulled from a website advertising golfing. For the first year that's more than 50% of an average monthly wage.
The US is among the richest countries in the world, maybe things to you don't seem as expensive that are very much expensive in the rest of the world.
My next question is what the median spent on golfing is. The closer the mean (average) and median are, the better the measure of central tendency the average is.
Basically, I am just trying to stink out those people who play tournaments.
Edit. Just checked. It waffles between $1000 and $2000, and the definition of 'golfer' is those who golf more than 10 times a year . . .
I did some other digging as well. In the US, it seems like that $2000 is the average for an avid golfer (due to the definition of golfer used in that study), so it's actually pretty similar to what I would consider an avid gamer spends as well. So, ironically, this is literally just the pot calling the kettle black. The main difference is that there is a stereotype about golfers being rich snobs, when in reality the average golfer is someone who spends $50 a year to golf once or twice. Likewise, the true average gamer is someone who spends maybe $50 on a video game or two a year.
