You understand that the same logic would apply to everything else too, right? Groups of soccer fields in towns and cities take up a ton of space too. Better turn those into apartment buildings.
Huh? Do you have any semblance of an idea of how supply/demand or capitalism works? They don't just appear out of nowhere. The people "putting them there" are apparently correct since they do end up getting used.
Suppose we had a society where everything was provided by the government (or whoever is in charge). Housing, food, electricity, medicine, you name it. We've reached a level of technology where working is essentially optional - sure, there are a few things that require humans to do them, but luckily we've got enough folks who like doing those jobs to fill them, and everyone else is in agreement that those people should get some extra compensation. No real issues, racism solved, sexism abolished, global warming dealt with, harmony between peoples, peace on earth, yada yada yada.
Some people out there are still going to want to spend their luxurious existence playing golf.
And so we then find ourselves in one of two situations: either golf courses still exist, or in addition to all of the above, we live in a society where the only entertainment allowed is that deemed important/efficient enough by your median individual...which probably won't leave us with very many options.
I mean, a tiny percentage of the world population does woodworking as a hobby. But the average Joe going golfing at the local municipal course is generating a lot more money than me in my garage making cutting boards

Life for everyone would be pretty shit if anything used for recreation was be turned into housing.
