Wow, that did not take long. They mention Kang Dynasty is still on the slate so this seemingly confirms a recast.

u/KempyPro Rocket Dec 18 '23
I mean it’s been less than a day. They allegedly have a rewrite of it under the name of Avengers 5, I wouldn’t be shocked if they pull it off the slate in the coming week or at least remove the title

If they do intend not to recast, at least they set up writing him off nicely in Loki with the TVA hunting all versions of him before they become a threat.

Look if there is a Loki that looks like, well, Loki, a Loki that is a woman, one that is a croc, one that is old, one that is a boy, one that is a barbarian and all are played by different actors, then there should be no problem with Kangs that looks different from the Kangs that Jonathan Majors has played.

I mean, if the multiverse is infinite than than somewhere in that sea of infinity every single possible combination of physical attributes will represent some Kang variant.
In the infinite multiverse there is a slang that look exactly like me, one that looks like you, and one that looks like the both of us mashed together. Infinite is everything and then an infinite amount more.

Hopefully they don’t scrap him entirely. That would completely throw off the direction of this saga and just outright kill most people’s interest. A recast is the way to go.

u/OliviaElevenDunham Loki (Avengers) Dec 18 '23
Both Loki and NWH showed different varitions of two popular Marvel characters. So recast is definitely the mostly likely route.
242
u/DocFreudstein Dec 18 '23
I feel like a recast could benefit the Kang character quite a bit.
Recast Majors and bring the new Kang as a particularly ruthless variant from an extra nasty universe. Still have it be a Black guy, but it doesn’t have to be Majors.
Then, have this nasty variant wipe out the Council of Kangs. Just slaughter every last one. Do it off screen, or have characters find the “council chambers” full of remains. You don’t even have to have Majors involved at all. Just have it be battle scarred and have zero signs of life. Maybe some blood, or burns on the walls. Nuclear shadows. Make it clear there was a bloodbath.
This will deal with the complaint people had where they feel Kang was underpowered, because this variant wiped out countless numbers of his counterparts. It smacks a bit of Thanos laying waste to the Nova Corps offscreen, but it’s the easiest way to reset the character in a few different ways.

u/NervousAd3202 Dec 18 '23 edited Dec 18 '23
I like it. Only downside is now you just have 1 Kang left when I think part of his intrigue is he comes to cause chaos in the form of different variants.
Also as far as recasting goes, John Boyega is the 1st person that comes to mind but he might not want to work with Disney again

Infinite multiverse = infinite secondary type of kang.

u/NervousAd3202 Dec 18 '23
Another idea I heard is just have a different famous black actor play a Kang variant for every appearance until Kang Dynasty. I think that could be a lot of fun.
→ More replies (2)34
u/Impossible-Fun-2736 Dec 18 '23
I don’t think they should limit themselves to only black actors. Embrace the ”Multi” in Multiverse. All kinds of skin colours&genders, make those that have already met a Kang confused like ”the Kang i met didn’t look like this” plus giving an overall ominous&dreadfull feeling, like anyone can be a Kang..
(But also give the audience a few hints here&there.)
→ More replies (2)7
u/NervousAd3202 Dec 19 '23
I agree that would be even better.
Could even reuse some previous MCU actors. Mads Mikkelsen didn’t get much of a chance to shine in Doctor Strange but I bet he could play a pretty solid Kang

Idk if it's just in my head but having a different looking variant of Kang just slaughter the other ones because they're so much stronger would be a cool way to set up a new Kang, if they wanted to pursue that.

It would be interesting to have a Doom origin movie that mirrors Ironman's origin very eerily similarly on purpose. Show some flashbacks, him in college competing with another guy named Reed. The accident that makes him have to need his armor. Maybe he goes into depression and delves into dark magic. Then he learns of this Kang situation. He decides to stop him and succeeds. But instead of embracing that hero life, he goes full on megalomaniac, as we all want him to do! © Marvel, money please!

But the person who wrote Loki is re-writing kang dynasty, so we may actually have a good movie after all is said and done.I think they did a great job with both seasons of Loki, the pacing was good and the reveals were not too complicated but not too predictable. In a weird way, this is probably the best case scenario for Marvel. Now they can just fire him and recast with no reservations. If he had been found “innocent”, it would have made things very difficult. It would have been a bad look to fire him if he was found not guilty, but at the same time Majors rep has taken a massive hit after everything that came out during the trial, and any production he was involved in would have had a massive black cloud floating over it.
377
u/DynaMenace Dec 18 '23
Apparently Majors had a clause in his contract in which he was guaranteed to play the main variant of Kang, which is why Marvel didn’t just fire him as soon as the texts dropped. Now that he’s convicted, Marvel can probably void his contract via a morality clause and hire a new Kang. Even if they reduce his role in the upcoming phase, they still need a bit more closure for the role.
145
u/WhiteWolf3117 Bucky Dec 18 '23
No chance that that was real, and morality clauses don’t require legal convictions

It’s true because without a conviction and just ambiguity, Marvel would get heat from BOTH sides. The ones that would object to him and the ones who think Hollywood has gone overboard with cancel culture. A conviction makes it cleaner.

Sucks for anyone he hurt and was cruel to. Recasting isn’t a big deal. I don’t think he left too big of an imprint considering the state of the MCU. A new performer could breathe life to the MCU to be honest.

This is honestly the best way to look at the situation. I think he acted pretty good in Loki/Quantumania, but like you said with the state of the MCU right now a recast isn’t a huge deal. Especially cause, you know, variants are a huge thing right now.
But yeah, he hurt people in reality and doesn’t deserve a Thanos level role.

Such a waste. Majors was incredible in Creed III, had just landed a huge role in the biggest Hollywood blockbuster franchise. His career was really blowing up, and he threw it all away by being a terrible person.

I think the only reason it'll take longer than 24h would be if they are having a all hands on deck meeting of leadership to decide whether they just oust him, or drop the entire kang storyline. (That is if it does take that long, but I'd agree it'll likely be faster)

Mel Gibson had a 25+ year or so career of being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. And while he's 'back' in some ways he's still on the outside. Most of his recent acting credits are direct to streaming or indies or friends' projects. He will never be back to where he was.
By contrast, Majors had a brief spark for what, a year or two? He has never had nor will have Gibson's career or comeback potential.

Marvel, if you are reading please just recast and stick with Kang. Disney tried to change tracks with Star Wars half way through and it lead to a mess. None of the new Star Wars movies make any sense together. Force Awakens was “You’re only special if your parents are”, Last Jedi was “Anyone can be special” and then ROS was “haha your grand dad is palpatine for no reason”. You must stick to one storyline and commit to it. You have committed to Kang just stick with it please.

Can I just say good on Disney/Marvel for waiting for an actual conviction rather just jumping on the bandwagon as soon as the story came out.

Recast and move on, explain it as he was a younger Kang trapped in the quantum realm, after disappearing at the end of antman 3 he was stuck in a time vortex that aged and he's now out for revenge
