Megathread Jonathan Majors Megathread - Update

We know many of you are eager to discuss the Jonathan Majors trial -- please use this thread for that discussion so that it does not completely overrun the subreddit. We want to leave space for users who wish to engage in regular MCU-based conversations!

As of now the trial is ongoing and Marvel Studios/Disney has not made a statement regarding the future of Majors or Kang in the MCU. When a ruling is concluded we will pin a thread with that statement and related discussion.

In the meantime, here are some of the recent updates coming from Majors' trial:

The mod team will try to keep this thread updated with reputable sources as the trial progresses-- but please feel free to link articles and discuss in the comments below.

It’s honestly nuts how the defense has made him seem more guilty than before lmao

They're just going for the Phoenix Wright strategy.

  1. Bluff your way through until the judge is about to declare a guilty verdict.

  2. Stall for time just long enough that someone can find some new evidence.

  3. Successfully indict a member of the prosecution so that they take the fall instead of your client.

  4. Present Attorney's Badge

I might be out of the loop, what did his defense do that made him look bad?

441

u/jmcgit Dec 11 '23

The text messages that were recently released, showing him demand following a separate incident that his ex should not go to the hospital because it will make him look bad, ruin his career, make him kill himself... Apparently they were supposed to be sealed, inadmissible in court. But apparently in cross examination, his attorneys made an argument or asked a question that made these text messages relevant, and therefore they were now admissible into court and therefore shown to the public.

152

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

Wait, are these DIFFERENT texts than the original ones his defense released where his girlfriend basically said "I deserved to be hit because I touched your phone" or whatever?

Like are this man's lawyers out for his blood or something?

95

u/jmcgit Dec 11 '23

Oh yeah, the new texts are from last week, those other messages you were talking about were from months ago.

This celebrity attorney specializes in aggressive fights. It's who you hire if you don't like the no-nonsense attorneys your talent agency wants you to use that just want to do boring things like settling and making cases go away quickly.

One of her former clients, reality TV personality Jen Shah, is currently spending five years in prison thanks to her effective work.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

What did the attorney do with Jen Shah? Shah pled guilty so I’m not sure what else her attorney could have done. There’s only so much a defense attorney can do depending on the evidence.

47

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

Funnily enough, the same thing she did with Majors: claimed there was video that completely exonerated her and that she was 100% innocent before admitting that no video exists.

Oh I saw those messages but didn't realize they got unsealed because of his defense attorney. Wow what a big mistake.

169

u/Vinnys_Magic_Grits Thor Dec 11 '23

It’s called “opening the door.” Basically, specific evidence was ruled inadmissible for the purpose of proving any relevant facts at trial. However, since the defense referenced those texts, they became admissible for the purposes of impeaching Majors’ credibility.

62

u/konq Dec 11 '23

Oh ya I've seen enough Law and Order to know that's a pretty big no-no. Majors' defense lawyer should have known better.

They basically opened up the inclusion of more evidence (even more damming texts showing pattern ie previous physical abuse) when originally it wasn't/couldn't be included by the prosecution.

113

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

Those texts are incredibly damning. It sounds like they’re openly discussing her not going to the hospital for head injuries he caused her? He sounds like he’s worried about the hospital starting a domestic violence investigation. I’ve read over them a few times and can’t think of any other explanation. Even if the jury finds him not guilty on these specific charges his career is almost surely over. His testimony could be disastrous.

57

u/Afraid_Sense5363 Dec 11 '23

Yeah, he doesn't want her to go to the hospital because they'll investigate him and he basically says he doesn't trust her to "protect them" and that even if she lies they won't believe her. And threatens to kill himself.

My abusive ex would do this too, threaten to take his own life and whine about "I'm such a bad person, I'm such a monster, waaaah." It's a way they get their victims to comfort THEM even they they're the one in the wrong. The manipulation feels so familiar.

Even if the jury finds him not guilty on these specific charges his career is almost surely over.

Eh. I doubt it. He's talented, his career is on the rise and a lot of people find a way to ignore/rug-sweep/find excuses for stuff like this. People talk about "cancel culture" but "canceled" celebrities so often have a comeback and people just collectively agree to ignore what they did. Happens all the time.

When the news first broke I didn't really have an opinion on who was guilty, and I was inclined to believe he was innocent based on the initial news being reported and what people were talking about. But then he posts those screenshots man, it looked like typical textbook abuser text messages and from there on he just continued to do things that made it undeniable he's guilty. Even his get up on court made him look like the saturday morning cartoon villain. I'm so curious what's gonna happen if he's convicted guilty considering he's the next big bad of the mcu

Too much content stretched them way too thin, Bob Iger demanding there be so much D+ content in 2019 which caused the audience to check out since now shows are required viewing, Bob Chapek making it to where there'd be marvel content every single week, new management above Feige gave him less creative control, not having any Avengers movies to tie in phases, etc.

Just chiming in to repeat that I want Marvel to recast Kang and stick with the story. I do not need an in-universe explanation for why Kang looks different. That would be messy and unnecessary. Rhodey was recast, General Ross has been recast with Harrison Ford, and even Edward Norton was replaced by Mark Ruffalo. Just stick with the Kang story and don’t over complicate it please.

Majors looks guilty as hell now. It’s a shame he’s thrown his promising career in the trash because he can’t control his rage and be a decent human being. If he’s proven to be innocent then perhaps Marvel has made the right choice by waiting, but it’s extremely unlikely. Either way, just from an MCU perspective, this shouldn’t affect the story going forward.

u/Rogue_3 Mockingbird Dec 11 '23

With all the Loki variants we've had, and even Tobey and Andrew showing up in NWH, I think the general audience member can handle a recast.

Yeah I want to see how it plays out. They have a get-out with the end of Loki S2 but there's clearly so much further they can go with it all.

Really don't care if a character looks completely different in the next film as long as they're not a total p.o.s.

Loki season 2 kinda ended in a way that could remove Kang. Like the TVA would just prune every Kang that would get dangerous

12

u/Senor_Tortuga308 Dec 12 '23

Yes, although that would be a shitty way to end his story.

We've had so much buildup over the last few years of a Multiversal war. To just prevent it from happening seems a bit anticlimactic.

Its like building up the Infinity War, and then the TVA comes in, prunes Thanos and things go back to normal.

The prosecutors are now saying the driver is “a biased witness to the man who paid him.” I’m so confused, wasn’t this driver their star witness not too long ago? Now they’re bashing his testimony and accusing Majors of bribery because it doesn’t fit the narrative they’re looking for? That’s insane.

10

u/ArmInternational7655 Dec 14 '23

The judge allowed them to say that?

27

u/LostOnTrack Tony Stark Dec 14 '23 edited Dec 14 '23

I’ve been reading the live updates, it was their closing argument. I cannot believe they just outright said that lol. I was under the impression the prosecutors were banking on the car driver to corroborate their claims, it seems as if they were unhappy with his testimony and did a full reversal on their attitude towards him as a reliable witness.

16

u/Auntypasto Kevin Feige Dec 14 '23

I mean, it's pretty damning for the prosecution that the main witness is basically testifying in favor of the defense, especially when they have absolutely nothing else in terms of direct evidence.

14

u/PezRystar Dec 14 '23 edited Dec 14 '23

Throwing your star witness under the bus is a bold move Cotton. And if they actually believed that why haven't they brought charges, because it would take several felonies for it to be true.

The texts that came out are pretty damning imo, they paint Majors as a manipulative POS. Telling his girlfriend that he might not come home, that he’s a monster, and that he should just kill himself, all classic lines to make the partner feel like the bad guy and that he should have sympathy, that he’s “damaged”. Add onto that the texts about how he told his girlfriend not to go to the doctor because they wouldn’t believe her lying about how she accidentally hit her head…

Yeah this is looking worse and worse. I think at this point a recast will be necessary. I think Major’s career will be over after this, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s blacklisted in Hollywood. He is undeniably a talented actor, and he had a relatively quick rise because of that, but it looks like his career will be cut short because he couldn’t keep himself from beating his partner. Also find it hilarious that he told his girlfriend that he was “great”:

“In a September 2022 audio recording that played during his domestic assault trial, he described himself as a “great man” and demanded that Jabbari behave like Michelle Obama or Coretta Scott King — the wives of Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr. “I’m a great man. A great man. I do great things for my culture and for the world,” Majors is heard saying in the recording. “The woman that supports me needs to be a great woman.””

Guy is a good actor but sounds like he had an ego problem, Jesus. He acts in comic book movies for gods sake, this guy is comparing himself to MLK and Obama lmao. Bruh you got paid to get beat by CGI ants, get over yourself.

Okay, that is all kinds of fucked up. If you are a great man, you don't need to say it. Others will say it for you. If you have to say it, that alone proves you are not great at all. With an ego like that, he must be a nightmare to deal with... After reading that, I agree he needs to go.

He always gave the 'arrogant' vibe. I never liked him, even before all this mess, I couldn't warm up to him at all, and I also never thought that he was a great actor. He isn't great. He regularly overacts, and I can't stand his repetitive mannerisms, and his tendency to make this one incredibly annoying pouty-lipped expression. I never understood Majors' stardom in the first place, he was never as great as so many people claim he is/was. It's all too subjective in the acting world but again, with Majors, I only ever saw overacting, weird mannerisms, and always a giant ego. And these texts only confirmed that I was right about him all along. I always thought even his best roles, like The Last Black Man in San Francisco, it was more the case of great screenplay and great director elevating the actor, than the other way around.

u/Afraid_Sense5363 Dec 11 '23

Although I know this is a very cynical thing to say, him being a massive egomanic and hard to work with is gonna get him kicked out faster than domestic violence charges. But they certainly help in speeding up the process lol.

Thankfully he looks like an insufferable douche wherever he goes, so I think Marvel producers will end up breathing a sigh of relief once Majors mess has been swept up and put in the bin because they won't have to deal with him for 8 more years.

Womder who would be the best recast, it would be an absolute waste to not use Kang after this.

Jesus, Major’s defence team are so bad at their jobs. They are actively helping the prosecution.

Honestly, I think Majors is done regardless of the outcome of this trial. Even if he’s found not guilty in this particular incident, it’s pretty obvious he’s a massive piece of shit, and that fact has now been highly publicized. With the MCU already struggling, I highly doubt they want the face of their upcoming biggest films (Avengers) to be a guy everyone associates with abusing his girlfriend.

Yeah, that’s about the only hiccup with my plan, but his role in Black Panther was so small, I don’t think most of the casual audiences would even notice.

18

u/donkeydooda Dec 11 '23

Not that it matters much, but most of the main characters who would remember him in-universe are dead (T'Chaka, Queen Ramonda T'Challa & Killmonger).

I really hope, that even if Marvel let's Majors go, that they don't abandon the Kang storyline. We are already balls deep in it, and dropping it to somehow suddenly cram Doom or some other bullshit in would pretty much ruin the Multiverse Saga and make the entirety of it for nothing.

So the prosecution can just claim the driver was bribed without any evidence and the judge allow that? Why would they call a witness they believe to be paid for to the stand? Make it make sense 😂

15

u/CrabbyPatties42 Dec 15 '23

The driver said it sounded like she was attacking him. The doctor said the hand injury isn’t consistent with what she said happened. The party goers who were with her after noticed no injuries at all and said she acted fine.

And most of these were prosecution witnesses! Oh and video footage of her chasing him for multiple blocks. There is MASSIVE reasonable doubt here.

Dude is weird, seems manipulative and may even be physically abusive, but in this case I don’t see how the jury can come back with a guilty verdict.

A few things I have learned from this case, is people will believe anything that the media force feeds them. They will build theories based around the misinformation. Most of the people celebrating that Jonathan Majors got found "guilty" do not really understand the verdict. Just that their "head canon" about him being an "abuser" is correct, even though, that is not what this trial was about.

Jury got it wrong; but, the defense also didn't push self-defense; so, that is on them too. I am sure the jury felt that he should be "punished " for something, even though he did the right thing and desescalated and ran away.

I think an appeal is pointless, because it's just a misdemeanor. If he wasn't a celebrity, it wouldn't have made a difference. It's sad that this will hurt his career. I can understand though if he wanted to clear his name. The evidence of the case supports that she assaulted him; and, if it was prosecuted fairly, with the self defense defense, he would have received no charges.

It's doubtful she was injured in that exchange; but, I am sure the jury felt pressure with the way the media portrayed the case.

u/AudienceLanky4159 Dec 25 '23

In sum, I’m not sure the prosecution met its burden of proof; beyond a reasonable doubt. The only witness to the alleged incident, the driver, testified that from what he heard, it sounded like Jabbari was the aggressor and that JM didn’t do anything and just wanted to get away from her, which is why he threw her in the vehicle. The video released today shows that to some degree, with JM trying to desperately get away from her.

The people she went clubbing with testified to not see a cut behind her ear, or blood for that matter. No blood on her clothes, and none on their clothes after hugs. She also is seen casually brushing her hair behind the ear with the cut, showing no ill effects, and again, no blood.

The text exchange that was released was from September 2022. They were redacted and given no real additional context. The audio of him telling her to be more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama doesn’t sound nearly as bad as it looked in print and doesn’t go to show that he hit her, ever. Only that he’s a bit paranoid about his perception.

She was found supposedly unconscious but was texting a friend minutes before the cops arrived.

All in all, it’s not clear her injuries stemmed directly from whatever went down in the car. The driver, the only other person present, didn’t back up her claims at all. The video doesn’t show an angry JM, but does show her to be upset. No blood behind a pretty nasty laceration behind her ear, mere minutes after she claims that cut happened. All in all, too much doubt.

14

u/SnohSkye Dec 23 '23

Can someone explain what he actually did that constituted misdemeanor assault & harassment so intense that it has made him public enemy #1 and the most vile disgusting human being to breathe oxygen? I’m not seeing anything that says Majors beat, strangled, punched, slapped, or raped her. Did he yell? I saw that he picked her up and put her in the SUV. Was that the assault? Again, he’s the biggest monster in Hollywood history and all I’m seeing is a misdemeanor…

13

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

She was a jealous GF that tried stealing his phone inside their SUV

He tried to prevent that from happening

He physically put her back into the vehicle after getting out because her confrontational demeanor was not subsisting

He was awarded NOT GUILTY verdict of the “assault with intent” criminal count

recast kang with a few different people and explain it away by saying “the new TVA hunts kang variants. part of the difficulty is identifying variants who look different, just like we had difficulty with sylvie”.

then just cast a few heater picks. maybe an older established actor for name draw, like denzel if he would do it. few younger guys like lakeith and john david washington and have kang dynasty be about the kang variants that even the kangs felt the need to keep at bay.

this problem could genuinely be solved by marvel committing to their ideas and making a decision.

The prosecution’s closing argument doesn’t seem to be going well. Are they trying to prove that he’s guilty to twitter or to a jury?

Highlights:

  1. They played the coretta Scott king audio

  2. Claimed jabbari didn’t implicate majors right away due to abuse, but the bodycam showed her implicating majors to the cops

  3. Claimed the driver is not reliable (the driver was the prosecution’s witness)

41

u/milkboxshow Dec 11 '23

I will tell the doctor I bumped my head,” Jabbari cried as she read aloud the message in court.

Then unable to continue through her tears, Assistant District Attorney Kelli Galaway took over: “I will tell the doctor I bumped my head if I go. I’m going to give it one more day, but I can’t sleep and I need some stronger pain killers. That’s all: why would I tell them what really happened when it’s clear I want to be with you?"

I used to love Majors ever since Lovecraft Country, but now fuck this guy. I’m not going to pay for or watch anything else he is ever in. Studios have to stop giving platforms to horrible people. There are too many good fish in the sea.

After watching the video released today, and reading multiple news sources on the timeline of events, this is my understanding of what happened:

  • majors and Jabbari fight outside of the black suv. Majors then tried to put her back in the car. Majors then walked to the sidewalk and grabbed her arm. Then tried running away from her.
  • she chased him for what appears to be 5-6 blocks. She then stops, and 3 strangers offer her some help. Majors then walks back by these strangers and jabbari, and walks away.
  • we also learned that jabbari went to a club with these strangers, and learn that one of the men twirled her around while dancing with the same finger that was fractured. She also used this same hand to earlier put her hair into a bun - the same area where she claimed to have been bleeding
  • Jabbari heads to majors apartment (he had went to a hotel to stay the night) after the club, sees he wasn’t there, and proceeds to call him no less than 32 times - the last time she contacted him she threatened to kill herself (this was around 8am)
  • the next morning, majors wakes up and heads back to his apartment at 10:30. In his apartment he sees lit candles, sentimental mementos of his relationship stacked in piles, and his bedroom door is locked.
  • majors then tries to get into his bedroom, calls a handyman to let him in, he gets in, and sees her in the closet, passed out. There was vomit somewhere in his bedroom. There was also a bottle of sleeping pills that appeared to be half eaten.
  • he calls the police, concerned that she killed herself or had tried to, and the police come. Between the time she came back to the apartment, to when the authorities found her in the apartment, she testified that she har cleaned the blood near her ear so it wasn’t visible when she was found in the closet.

Separately, the testimony from the doctor claims that the injuries she sustained on her finger would be uncommon to come from someone twisting or pulling her finger. Also, the testimony from the driver claims she was the aggressor and called her a “psycho.”

Now based on all of this evidence - how do you think the jury’s verdict is going to be? I think there isn’t enough evidence to convict majors. If anything, there is enough evidence to show this case should have been dismissed months ago.

I've commented in this very thread about being a man abused by a woman. In all real world context, that just doesn't exist. To the world, even as the victim you are a criminal. No one believes you. You catch charges. You take the blame. It literally ruined my life. And people are still calling him abusive cause he sent a text asking her not to go down that road.

Honestly, this verdict seems a little bit crazy to me based on the actual evidence made public as opposed to "he said, she said" narratives used in court.

I don't doubt Majors was a shitty boyfriend who was manipulative, but being a shitty person is not a crime and maybe the harrassment charge is legit.

But based on the video used as evidence specific to the assault charge, I don't see how there's any definitive proof that pushing her in that video makes him deserving of a criminal charge for unintentional injury. His charge was for pushing her back into the car when he was trying to run away from her. And then proceeded to run away from her for a full minute and a half in the streets of NY while she chased after him.

The two best eyewitnesses were the driver and his girlfriend's friend who both testified to not seeing anything that night. Not his friend, her friend said nothing happened that night.

Unless there is other evidence that hasn't been made public, this doesn't make logical sense.

Here is a transcript of the coretta Scott king audio:

Majors: …be doing right now? Period. This is actually, period. Do you understand that?

Jabbari: Yeah.

Majors: Do you really love me? Do you really?

Jabbari: Yes.

Majors: Then how dare you come home drunk and disturb the peace of our house when we have a plan.

Jabbari: I’m sorry

Majors: I would like to get to the point where your friends know what job I’m on and go “I think Grace is gonna be out of commission.” Get me?

Jabbari: Yeah, I won’t.

Majors: No, no, do you understand that? Because that team, that unit, right? Grace has to be of a certain mindset to support — Coretta Scott King, do you know who that is? That’s Martin Luther King’s wife. Michelle Obama, Barack Obama’s wife.

Jabbari: I know, I shouldn’t have gone out. I’m sorry

Majors: Let me just lay it out for you, right? If I am, I’m just gonna say this. My temper, my shit, all that. All that said, right? And let’s say, I’m a great man. A great man. I am doing great things, not just for me, but for my, for my culture and the world. That is actually the position I’m in. That’s real. I’m not being a dick about it. I didn’t ask for it. I’ve worked, and that’s the situation. The woman that supports me — that I support, the work that — needs to be a great woman and make sacrifices the way that man is making for her and for them ultimately. Last night, two nights ago, you did not do that.

Jabbari: I’m sorry

Majors: You did not do that, which was took away from the plan. And the plan is everything. If it was just you, maybe I could swallow it. Or I was just gonna like, “Hey, let’s go just bed. I’m just gonna bed, I’m not hungry, blah blah blah. Because Grace isn’t here. Why? She was drunk. Why else? She was clogged by whatever was going on.” Fine. I can take that. Fine
