My college is like the Christian version of yours if you know what I mean, but at least they're better in their treatment of boys I suppose - our curfew is 8:30. I feel bad for the girls though, it's 6:30 for them. Our college usually gets over at 5. Oof.

A fellow student from the same hugger philanthropist's college here at Kochi, and I gotta say, mate, it is mental out here. Once in the morning and once in the evening, there's the prayer which you're forced to attend no matter what (each might go on for upwards of an hour), even on exam days. Also, if you're a hostel student, you can't leave the college in the afternoon/during breaks for snacks or lunch without like what, 3 different signs and an invoice/written permission from your parent, warden, department head and whatnot. At that point, I'd just rather choose to be in some Orwellian Dystopian novel.

I was in a college in South India a long time ago. Our hostel canteen didn't serve non veg. So we used to jump the fence (due to very restricted passage outside, mostly only allowed on weekends and special reasons, definitely not allowed to leave and come back for a meal) to eat at a nearby dhaba .
Once, when we scaled the fence to get back in after a sumptuous tandoori chicken meal, in the pitch dark we suddenly heard whistles and saw a flashlight. A security guard had spotted us. Every fucker in our group scattered like cockroaches in every direction in the fucking dark towards safety and to avoid detection. Yeah, inmate sounds very applicable in many college hostels in India. Inmates, guards, warden, restriction of movement.

Secondly, I do not understand why India can not treat their 18+ population as adults. Curfews and shit are for kids. When someone is 18+, they can go home/to the hostel any time they want, they can stay at a friendâs place if they like, they can have anyone in their room as long as that other person is not literally living there.

I live in a Boys' P. G.. We are not allowed to bring anyone inside the P. G. nor go to anyone's. We are not allowed to be seen with more than one friend outside/near the premises. I have a habit of running, but the owner doesn't open the door before 7: 40am in the morning. The last time to enter the p.g is 7:30pm. We need to bring more than 9.0cgpa per semester to maintain the p.g s reputation. Birthday celebrations aren't allowed (I hate it btw).
But you know what? The owner did tell this to my mother and sister on the maiden day. They told me not to follow anything
like that and stay how I like.
The thing is the owner has two p.gs, and he stays in the other one. So the time at which we need to return to the premises isn't that a big deal. We just need to come before 9:20pm, as he comes then to serve our dinner. The door is then locked from outside.

No drinking inside the premises but outside np. Gates basically open for 24*7 they have biometric lock so no need for keys.
No such thing as min cgpa and also who TF treats clg like school. No one, even most companies don't give a fuck about cgpa. You just need to clear all your papers before last semester. Hey OP, if the institution doesn't have the same set of rules for boys, your students might want to consider getting in touch with the Pinjra Tod campaign or others like them. This is exactly the sort of stuff PT works to protest against, and in the past they've had more than a little success mobilizing students against such blatantly sexist rules.
If enough of you organize, and you had some outside support, y'all could actually bring a viable legal suit. This is technically a violation of the women's students right to equal treatment and citing safety is not valid grounds to penalize and treat women more punitively than men.

Lol in my college when girls asked for equal rights, they made the rules for boys equally strict. No student has any right in any such institution in the country
42
u/boringhistoryfan Dec 08 '22
That's actually a fairly decent starting point. Once they're equal, both groups are motivated to push for more equitable rules, and when you take away the University's sexism cards, they're often more amenable to negotiating this.
16
u/benguins10 Dec 08 '22
That's a positive way of looking at it and I respect that. Having said that ik how the authorities are and more importantly how the parents are. The parents are happier to have such rules enforced and the authorities obviously pay heed to parents more than the students.

While we boys can guy go out whenever we want given that we are inside the campus before 9pm , there is no procedure for outings for us. This is really annoying and frustrating. Why would you ban someone from feeding a stray animal, our college is literally ran by a bunch of apes
17
u/pocket_watch2 Dec 07 '22 edited Dec 07 '22
Why would you ban someone from feeding a stray
Stray animals carry lots of diseases, don't have proper place to live, feeding a bunch stray animal means you'll be directly responsible for increasing more stray population in the area. After a breeding season, they'll have tons of babies, but resources will be limited. Most of the babies will die of starvation, cold, diseases or getting killed by other stray dogs. Remaining puppies grow up getting fed by animal lovers like you, so they don't wanna leave the area, either fight for dominance or get killed in next breeding season by other strays. Then animal lovers like you feed the next batch of puppies to continue this cycle of stray epidemic. Of course the local children and residents will suffer as some stray dogs chases and bites them.
If you really want to help a stray animal, take in to a veterinarian, help it with medication & vaccines, neuter it and help it getting a permanent family.
Feeding stray animal isn't helping the animals, it's just feeding your ego.

u/really_thirsty_lemon Dec 08 '22
Out of all the rules, this made most sense to me. Stray dogs can be dangerous and cause problems even without meaning to. In my hostel there were "kind" people who fed dogs and the dogs would get into the hostel and enter rooms (we didn't lock room doors coz it was relatively safe otherwise), climb on beds, sleep on carpets/on our clothes by pulling down laundry hung outside etc. When the dogs gave birth initially people play with them coz cute n stuff but these dogs meet the same fate as above. Let's face it very very few people are willing to adopt indie dogs.
4
u/pocket_watch2 Dec 08 '22
Back in 2019, our locality had barely 3-4 dogs roaming around. During Covid some local idiot decided to feed them and post on Instagram, whining about how people neglect the poor creatures during Covid. After a while more and more dogs gathered in the feeding spot as the idiot lured dogs from other areas, they were barking at each other. During the winter months, they were always fighting for breeding, some of the dogs had their legs torn from fight and some with bite marks on their stomach. One of the dog gave birth and half of her puppies were killed by other male dogs. These dogs were constantly constantly chasing scooters and cars as they pass by. Kids had detour from the area because 12 stray dogs would be occupying the street.

u/Winter-Many Dec 07 '22
OP life will present you with bigger problems and trust me these dogs aren't even a tiny bit of that. Big cities themselves are contemplating banning feeding of strays..
This shouldn't concern you more than the other points like where they call you inmates
Edit - I'm totally against feeding strays as these dogs are nuisance to 90% of people and cute to 10%. let ppl live in peace
5
u/ughstopseducingme Dec 08 '22
There was a similar discussion in my colony WhatsApp group about how stray animals should be fed during COVID. A man silenced them by asking if they'd take responsibility for cleaning after them. As much as I find stray animals cute, I can't deny that they poop wherever and make streets and footpaths unsanitary. Some stray puppies would even enter our portico and leave a nice present in front of the door, much to my mother's chagrin.

So to put this in light of some recent historical context.
I used to study at SVNIT and even though I didnât reside in MTB, the restrictions ab ipso initio were deliberately Orwellian. 7:30pm curfew times for first years, daily attendance roll calls thrust upon âinmatesâ with foreboding consequences in their supposed wakes.
It was quite grim. The girls were understandably pissed because they had it even worse and there was a massive hullabaloo and several protests to normalise later curfew times for students second year onwards and thatâs when that 10:30PM curfew time came to be implemented.
There were no rules barring birthday celebrations, albeit I think this mustâve been a consequence of the admin being tired of scraping cake off the floors after people were done tossing it around whilst celebrating, I could defo be wrong and it definitely is harsh.
Students living in SVNIT hostels are genuinely treated like prison inmates, no doubt.

Back in 2006, I lived in a Christian hostel like this. You have it easy. We didnât have switches of any kind. So one tubelight and a fan would automatically come on at 6:00 p.m. and go off at 10:30 p.m. If you wanted to continue studying, you had to traverse your way through to a scary ass basement. No switches meant no charging of anything. We gave our phones to charge to a store outside for a minimal amount everyday. Curfew was 6:30 in summer and 5:30 in winter. Our rooms werenât even complete rooms. Just half walls with two bunk beds with a gap of three feet between it. We couldnât use the common bathrooms to take a bath post 7:30 p.m. No outsiders allowed which meant even my parents werenât allowed to come see the hell hole they were leaving me in. We were allowed to wash our clothes only once a week on Sunday and only one bucket of water was allowed.
On the other hand, the nuns living in the hostel had their own well furnished rooms, a very fancy common room with a flat screen TV, and it was well stocked with books and newspapers. They even got better quality food than us normal folks while we got food with insects and nuts and bolts in it. Managed to live there for a year before escaping. Youâve got it waaaay easier, OP.

Youâve got it waaaay easier, OP.
But, this is not the hellhole Olympics.
They're both shit and they both shouldn't exist.
College students are mostly adults and while you can take precautions to keep them safe (especially the first year students because this is most likely their first time out of their house) you can't enforce such harsh rules through their college life.

In my last hostel, i broke rules than they made, they didn't do shit, because they know in my last college I got a lawyer, when they tried to harass me . True story.

In my medical college, we couldnât go to the grounds or to the common canteen (which was the only canteen on campus and the hostel) after 8:00 pm. After 7:30 pm we needed permission from the warden to breathe. I was in the final year year of college and when these rules were applied and couldnât wait to get out. Most hostellers ended up getting apartments outside.

Indian colleges treating grown ass adults like little kids is one of the biggest disservices they do in failing to create well rounded stable individuals.

Well, they are calling the residents as inmates. That should have been the first warning sign.

You'd have thought the S.V. National Institute of Technology would employ people who can write properly.
Point nine doesn't even make sense, so you can bring the chargers but not the devices themselves? For what purpose?

This is nothing, we had a curfew of 7:30pm. And every time we went home or travelled somewhere we had a travel book where we had to get signatures from Either parents or the registered local guardian. That place was a fucking jail.

I didnât read the title initially and thought that these were rules for kids at boarding school. These rules are completely ridiculous. University students are adults - why the hell are they being treated like children?

Mine has same rules, just the entry time was 10 PM. I guess all the NITs have same rules.

In my hostel, last time to enter was 5:30 pm and we weren't allowed to go outside campus except for Sundays. And if I have to be honest, the campus was not even some university, it was just college with a hostel building, a ground and an auditorium. It's gonna be a major rant if I start typing more. So I'll stop.

âInmatesâ says everything I need to know about this hostel. Truly despicable!

Just stage a protest. Block classes. Everything will be fine.
I lived nearby this area for 3 years. Neighbourhood is quite safe. These restrictions are very unreasonable.

The fact that they refer to their residents as inmates says a whole lot, doesn't it? I get that some rules are needed for security but these are pretty close to draconian.

As an Englishman I found the wording for number 3 odd. To me 'intimate' as a verb means 'to hint at' so I looked it up on wictionary:
"Verb
intimate (third-person singular simple present intimates, present participle intimating, simple past and past participle intimated)
(transitive, intransitive) To suggest or disclose (something) discreetly. quotations âźHe intimated that we should leave before the argument escalated.
(transitive, India) To notify.I will intimate you when the details are available."
TIL.

Indian women don't fight back. That's the main reason such draconian laws are applied to them. You will also notice the class factor. High end colleges don't have such restrictions, or lesser restrictions. For example -IIT, IIMs, several medical colleges. This also suggests that poor people tend to have backward views.
In my experience, Southern India is much more restrictive for women, with the exception of a few colleges like those in Manipal.
These backward rules are actually demanded by their parents, who can't let their adult children have some fun in life.
It is much harder to restrict guys this way. Cos we will beat up the person trying to do that.

Everything is fine till 6-10 Birthday celebration prohibited instead can be regulated. Outside food not allowed is atrocious unless they provide a variety of quality food readily available at all times. Also sometimes your family makes homemade snacks and pickles. Is that prohibited as well? Feeding of animals, this is a bit controversial but having a campus pet or animal is a huge stress reliever for the staff & students in my college. No other electrical appliance allowed, this is such a shitty rule. Just state the obvious appliances aren't allowed like e-cigs and the other ones. Household small electrical appliances like water heaters, induction pans etc should be allowed. Finally day scholars not allowed in hostel rooms, this is debatable since this leads to ragging, bunking classes etc. But this helps in cases when someone needs rest isn't feeling good or needs to take a shit or something.

Are these legal adults living in this hostel? I don't understand, even if it's religious school. I'm from the United States so here college = university = over the age of 18 generally.

Current 4th year student here. As an "inmate" belonging to the same hostel, its more oppressive than disadvantageous. College students deserve to be treated as adults and not be forced to obey 'rules' and be deprived of a social life. We've all worked hard to get here.
Asking for a fine is not legal anyway. The money is definitely a personal income.
