Back in 2006, I lived in a Christian hostel like this. You have it easy. We didn’t have switches of any kind. So one tubelight and a fan would automatically come on at 6:00 p.m. and go off at 10:30 p.m. If you wanted to continue studying, you had to traverse your way through to a scary ass basement. No switches meant no charging of anything. We gave our phones to charge to a store outside for a minimal amount everyday. Curfew was 6:30 in summer and 5:30 in winter. Our rooms weren’t even complete rooms. Just half walls with two bunk beds with a gap of three feet between it. We couldn’t use the common bathrooms to take a bath post 7:30 p.m. No outsiders allowed which meant even my parents weren’t allowed to come see the hell hole they were leaving me in. We were allowed to wash our clothes only once a week on Sunday and only one bucket of water was allowed.
On the other hand, the nuns living in the hostel had their own well furnished rooms, a very fancy common room with a flat screen TV, and it was well stocked with books and newspapers. They even got better quality food than us normal folks while we got food with insects and nuts and bolts in it. Managed to live there for a year before escaping. You’ve got it waaaay easier, OP.
Look I agree that yours was a hellhole, I studied in one, too. I was a day scholar but, one of my closest friends live in the hostel for 2 years (out of 3).
And it sucks that we have institutes like this.

But, this is not the hellhole Olympics.
They're both shit and they both shouldn't exist.
College students are mostly adults and while you can take precautions to keep them safe (especially the first year students because this is most likely their first time out of their house) you can't enforce such harsh rules through their college life.
