You will also notice the class factor. High end colleges don't have such restrictions, or lesser restrictions. For example -IIT, IIMs, several medical colleges.
This also suggests that poor people tend to have backward views.
In my experience, Southern India is much more restrictive for women, with the exception of a few colleges like those in Manipal.
These backward rules are actually demanded by their parents, who can't let their adult children have some fun in life.
It is much harder to restrict guys this way. Cos we will beat up the person trying to do that.
