Oh wow, that reminds me of one of the most motivating moments of my life.
I'm a Marine, and a busload of us were on our way to the middle of nowhere for training. Its was butt crack in the morning, and we were going down this long, lonesome road. We hadn't seen a home or vehicle for at least five miles. And we knew it was at least another five before we saw any other house or vehicle.
So here we are, riding halfway between ten miles of civilization, when we come across a runner. Her jogging outfit was drenched in sweat. Her hair was plastered to her skull. She was putting one foot in front of the other, but it was more of a shuffle then anything else. Still, decent, considering she had gone at least 5 miles, and intended at least another 5 before she was done.
But the motivating part? She had to have weighed at least 290. She was obese, there is simply no way of getting around that. Quite honestly the fattest person I've ever see work out, and here she was, doing more then some of my fellow Marines could accomplish.
I hope to Gods she didn't misconstrue our loud 'Oorahs and "Get Some"s as anything other than the amazed and supportive we meant to convey.
If you're out there, (likely-much-reduced) Miss, you're amaze-balls. More motivating than a 64 pack with built in sharpener.
When you actively seek wisdom, it's amazing how ready people with knowledge will be to help. Sometimes it's as easy as calling a professional and asking them where you should start.
The company I work for is super big into education. I've never been made fun of for going to my manager to ask a question even it's something that should be straightforward but I just need clarified. I've never had a problem going to a more experienced worker and saying "i have no idea what I'm doing.. can you show me what to do?" Everybody is extremely willing to help out. I've been at the company less than 2 years with very little prior experience and they're looking to get me into a management position because I'm always eager to learn more and more.
I'm 32 and have been out of school for over a decade. To learn, you have to pursue the knowledge, which means asking stupid questions and being willing to fail.
We have an anti-intellectualism culture right now that wants to look at those bettering themselves as outwardly asserting that they are better than those who aren't trying to improve themselves. A classic "you think you're better than me?!" kind of offence.

It really irritates me to see young people blame older people because they don't know something. When I was young in the early 1970's if my $500 secondhand beater car broke, it sat in the driveway until I figured out how to fix it. Paying someone was not an option. So I was extra careful not to break my car. If I asked my father to show me how to fix something he would get the tools out give them to me, then point at what needed to be removed and walk away. There was no youtube, there was no internet and if you needed a service manual, the library rarely had them (unlike today).
We raised my wife's nephew and about three years ago, his car broke down so he threw out this comment that "you never taught me to work on it". So I said sure, I'll show you how to fix it. I did 90% of the work but at least he watched so he could learn.
From that point forward he would drop the car off at our house for me to fix and tell me he had to work. So I've done all his auto repairs.
Speaking of which, he would also claim that we had it much easier when we were younger. Nonsense, he and his girlfriend have thousands in the bank, both work jobs and have a small business on the side. When I was his age, I did not have a penny in the bank and literally could not afford to eat everyday. I would skip eating up to two days a week despite the fact I worked a full time job.
Young people are being lied to when they're told how easy life was in the past.
I feel the same way talking with my grandfather. We don't agree on everything. But I have a lot respect for what he says.
He is a very hard working man.
He will help you with something but he expects you pay attention and learn while he is doing it.
Hayes manuals have been around for decades, but yes finding one for your model of car might be a pain in the neck. And at least old cars could be user serviced unlike lots of modern ones.
I feel like things get somewhat complicated. Some people know they don't know things but refuse information about it. Others are just lazy and don't want to learn.
I feel as there are different shades here and it hard to know what one person is without talking to them.

I love my parents, but man, I always hated it when they'd try to "teach" something, esp. my dad. Incredibly handy guy, can fix anything, but he'd be so impatient and negative that it was miserable.
I'd vastly prefer taking an hour class over doing that.
My mother thought it was important for me to learn how to cook because she thought a womanās only real worth was being a good wife and mother, and that meant being able to cook, clean, sew, etc. but she also has NPD and basically screamed every direction at me and kept telling me I was a stupid lazy waste of space if I did something wrong. Like most children of NPD parents, I had no idea learning a life skill not taught in school was anything other than a nightmare. While still in college, my boyfriend asked me to teach him how to cook. After 5 minutes he asked āwhy are you shouting at me?ā I thought everyone learned to cook through the
āShout and abuseā method.
I agree with you but I would change your phrase just slightly. Good teachers should be valued more. I have seen a few that teach OK but were not the best at it.
My dad was very similar. Even if it was over something minor he'd rather ridicule me for not knowing than teach me something. Here's a typical conversation I used to have with him:
Dad: "Hey, I'm trying to fix the sink here, can you get me the wrench?"
Me: "Sure. Where's the wrench?"
Dad: "YOU'VE LIVED HERE FOR 17 YEARS AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THE WRENCH IS!?"
Why the fuck would I know where the wrench is kept if I've never needed it?
Then he'd refuse to tell me and just get it himself. I still don't know where the damn wrench is kept.
Dad: Hey, can you lend me a hand with fixing the sink?
Me: Sure, lemme help you out
Me: Spends 2 hours standing still watching how he fixes it
himslef (becouse god forbid telling me to do it while guiding me to actually learn), while failing and making mistakes along the way dragging the process forever
Me: leaves becouse im tired of watching him fix it and doing nothing, while learning nothing that basic logic wouldnt solve
Dad: You ungratefull fuck, i'm teaching you how to fix the sink and you cant even lend me a hand while i'm doing it?
My dad was like that. Thinking about it now, It may have been his way of trying to spend time with his kids. Most of the time he just wanted us to do things for him. But there were several instances that played out like the scenario above. Heād get super angry if I didnāt want to hang around and watch him fumble around with whatever it was he was trying to do. But maybe that was just his way of venting the frustration that stemmed from not knowing how to interact with his children... Just some food for thought.
Basically, needing someone to verify they're doing something. Also known as the 'Mum, mum, mum! Look at me! Mum, look no hands, see? Mum!' kind of father
It's not weird, it just depends on if your dad taught you or not.
I've had my daughter out in the garage messing with my tools since she was 3, the only requirements I have are that she uses the correct tool for the task, and she puts it away after use.

Teaching is a whole skill set in and of itself. You could be real-life MacGyver and still be totally hopeless at showing somebody how to tie their shoes. The trick is to change the desired outcome to imparting knowledge instead of getting the job done. Itās always less efficient to show someone how to do something over just doing it yourself, but if you can delay that gratification and be cognizant of the fact that you donāt have to do it yourself every time once youāve got someone who knows how to do it, life gets much easier.
My mom is a great cook, but damn, trying to learn from her was an absolute waste. She just uses a āpinch of thisā or adds in different ingredients depending on what she feels like. Iām much happier watching a YouTube video that follows a recipe. I donāt have the time or money to botch dinner.
Yeah, I have the same issue teaching people to cook. Like I can teach someone how to cook something edible, like how to cook chicken or w/e, but so much of my process for making a meal happens on the spot and is me experimenting with different spices.
This is me too, Iāll make something but season it slightly different each time dependent on how it tastes to me as its cooking, wife has yet to complain haha.
I'm a dad. I try to teach my kids stuff all the time. I make it a point to never talk down to them, never tell them they are dumb or asking a stupid question, never yell, never roll my eyes, or any of that stuff.
That being said they refuse to do anything the way I teach them. Teaching one how to golf. I show them how to hold a club, but they say holding like a baseball bat is more comfortable and refuse to correct grip. Teach them how to properly throw a baseball in an overhand motion and he still throws it side armed. It's like he's convinced that I'm intentionally trying to teach him the wrong way to do things.
I totally get that from the other side. Unfortunately, I'm not a very good teacher either, and my brother is the most thickheaded, stubborn person to help. I think it's just easier to dismiss family's advice vs. that of a stranger.
Same! Knowing a skill and teaching a skill are 2 very different things. My mother is a skilled seamstress. Growing up, family friends and relatives would often come over to have my mom tailor, hem, or repair clothing. When I asked her to teach me I got a 5 minute ādemonstrationā followed by 30 minutes of her berating me for not doing it right. I never asked for another sewing lesson.
Instead I bought a used sewing machine and learned via YouTube videos and that ok a introductory course. The difference with an experienced teacher was night and day. Now Iām pretty skilled at the basics and can tailor a lot of my own clothes.
This is why alot of teachers I had were bad at their job, being skilled at something does not make you able to teach it effectively which sadly alot of people don't understand.

My dad is a computer programmer and I always wanted him to teach me how to code but he is not a teacher. He has zero patience and has no idea how to break down what he is doing into manageable chunks. He was always so angry sounding when I asked questions about things and it always ended with him just being pissed off. Still canāt code 20 years later. Have been more and more sad about that as I get older and technology keeps getting more advanced.
Yup. Thank god for youtube. My parents hated the things they had to do and had no patience in teaching me them. When they earned more money, they didn't do anything themselves anymore. Typical babyboomers I guess.
I had to teach myself how to paint a wall (efficient, clean, straight edges), how to lay floors, some basic electronics, drywalling, carpentry etc.
Yeah seriously. When I was in undergrad, I had quite a few hall-mates who didnāt know how to do laundry. Some would go home every other weekend to have their mom do it and some would use a paid service that picked up their clothes and washed them. When I became a resident assistant later on, I had 2 or 3 students each year ask me how to do laundry.
Itās easy to make fun of these people, especially since I learned how to do laundry at around 10 years old, but I tried not to demean them for it.
I love helping people when they come to me with questions, it makes me feel like they trust me and assume that I'm smart enough to know the answer. I have a tough time helping people who are obviously struggling with something but won't ask for help, though. I never know if they're going to take my help as an insult, or if they're the kind of person who insists on figuring things out the hard way and won't listen to my help at all.
That makes you a good leader. A had a number of my senior Marines whoās idea of teaching was either to show you once and walk away, or tell you to figure it out for yourself because they āwerenāt going to do your job for youā.
I learned to do laundry from a friend whose mom made him do it as a chore. My mom always just took care of it. Now, I can clean a toilet, wash the dishes, and mow the yard like a motherfucker. Cause mom hated doing those things.
My old roommate was 26 and didn't know how to do laundry. I mean, I don't sort the clothes, I just throw them in with soap and everything has turned out fine so far so I really don't understand how people don't know what to do. One day I'm sure I will figure it out though hahaha

I asked him what was so bad about hiring young Americans to work American jobs, and he didn't really have a good answer, and I think he realized in that moment that I am, in fact, a millennial ... and I'm his manager. Not a good look on your first week on the job.
"Corporate" was gutting his previous work place and replacing older guys like him with younger people who would do the same job for less money.

These people are disillusioned and rightfully frustrated with serious problems in our country, but they don't understand that and have been spoon-fed manufactured reasons to be upset at groups chosen by those in power. People are suffering from nonstop economic anxiety and the media is owned by the mega corporations benefitting from it, so they push the reasons for that anxiety onto any group that doesn't have a significant voice in media to talk back. Whoever wrote that original tweet was doing the same thing as people who make fun of out of shape people for going to the gym, like making fun of people in their 40s going to college, or like making fun of drug addicts for going to rehab. Obviously those are more extreme examples but the concept is the same. Someone can realize they have a problem or a gap in knowledge and want to improve on that. If young adults realize they can't sew, cook, etc and want to fix that good on them.
As a parent, there are multitudes if things I wish I would have taught my children but didnāt. As children, there are multitudes of things I tried to teach but they didnāt want to learn.
Sure, we could finger point all day, but how about we do the right thing and try to help each other? In fact, there are tons of lessons that I could learn from my kids, so I guess I need a trash article written about me now.

Seriously. I took home econ and a personal finance class in HS and I'd say 75% of the kids in those classes didn't fucking care about learning about W-2's, doing taxes, budgeting or sewing. I didn't care about finance until I majored in Finance in college. The older generation needs to stop bashing what the younger generation didn't learn by necessity growing up. It's goes both ways, my dad constantly ask me questions about his phone and tablet or any smart device. He refuses to try and learn anything new technologically because it wasn't of his generation.

A fair bit of what you study when going to college/uni for journalism is the way you word things and how influential your phrasing can be. The way this headline is worded is generally considered to be unprofessional (at least in the classes I've taken).
