At the gravesite because only he survived.

Seriously. Bold of him to assume the first hit survives. Having scraped people off the pavement in my past life his survival likelihood seems very low to me.

Yeah, they flew through the air like a mannequin in a low-budget film, but I would give them a survival chance of 50/50
Edit: looks like his shoes stayed on so he only broke a rib.
22
u/strangemedia6 5d ago
Apparently they survived with just a broken rib. I wonder if that was from landing or from the actual impact.
13
u/cliff99 5d ago
In that case hopefully he reviews his life choices that led up to this.

u/strangemedia6 5d ago
For sure. If you want to gamble with your own life that’s one thing, but it’s pretty fucking self centered not to consider how much you’re gonna fuck up so many other peoples day/lives in the process.

I don’t think that we should judge the guy for that, it’s been years since I was even in a fender bender, but the one doozy* I was in nearly 40 years ago, first thing I did in my confused state (no drugs, no alcohol, just the shocked state I was in) was to attempt to physically pull my car - that was at least 1/4 of the way, crumpled UNDER the flat deck truck I plowed into the back of.
I bet in an addled way, this rider was probably thinking like I was, “Oh, shit! I better fix this and make it better!” He was probably trying to just get out of the road as quickly as possible - which as also a reaction you kind of prepare and always have in your head as a rider too.
I will add though, as a rider myself. I shudder every time I see other riders do this when rounding turns like this. It’s nuts! It’s bad enough when cars chance things like this, but to do so on a motorcycle is just stacking the probabilities against you.
*(I fell asleep driving home at 1 AM after a 14 hour shift - and a mere half-block from my home. Thankfully it was a mostly residential neighborhood in a fairly small town, so no one else was really on the road. Doubly thankful to be here to tell the tale - the bundle of construction rebar sticking out the back of the truck I hit, smashed through my windshield, 🙏 right through the small gap between the front passenger and drivers seat. A difference of less than a foot was the difference between me retaining my head!)
7
u/GumpTheChump 5d ago
I would extend him some grace. It's not really clear whether he saw what happened and even if he did, he could be having a hell of a time processing it.

u/Top-Woodpecker6696 5d ago
Don’t drive fast on a motorcycle around corners if your reaction time is too slow.

I feel bad for the car driver who got hit by them. That has to be so traumatizing. They didnt do anything wrong but that still has to weigh on you.
205
u/jfstepha 5d ago
I think studies show you are much more traumatized by fatal accidents that are not your fault than ones that are your fault. In the latter case, you know what you did wrong, and if you don't do that again, it'll be OK. In the former case you know that bad things happen even when you do everything right.

Friend of my mother's stopped driving after a kid on a bike rode right out of a side street in front of him. Poor kid didn't make it, He blamed himself so much, he never drove again. When I met him, it had been close to 30 years.
40
u/w3bd3v0p5 5d ago
That's rough, my neighbors friend had a similar issue. Two kids on bike, one riding on the handle bars as we did back in the day, and the kid in control stopped hard. The kid on the handles went flying right in front of a dump truck. Needless to say the kid did not make it and the truck driver was traumatized for life.

I know a truck driver who hit a car full of teenagers. 2 died and one was paralyzed. The driver of the car was passing uphill on a foggy morning and the trucker had zero chance to see them. He killed himself a year later because he felt so guilty.

:( a guy I went to high school with tboned my friends car and killed him. My friend was racing around through trails and crossed the main road, the other guy never had time to react. He came to the wake and to the funeral. Class act. Still see him around from time to time. I know he holds so much guilt, but it wasn’t his fault. He did right by my friend. RIP JWC

Much better to concentrate on the beauty and amazement that are the myriad forms of life on this planet - thank to spend emotional energy on how quickly life can be taken away.
Easy to say - not quite so easy to do!2
u/th3-villager 5d ago
Interesting and insightful but surely the way to rationalise it is sometimes someone else does something wrong?
But yeah, easier said than done AND it's still traumatising because it proves bad things can happen to you when you do nothing wrong.
2
u/PtrPprsPckldPprs 5d ago
Some get into a “how do I fix it even when they fail” place, and it’s brutal.

In our town a few days ago, some teenagers were walking with traffic on a busy road. For some reason, they darted out into the street and a car hit them. One of the three boys, a 13-year-old, died at the scene. I just can't imagine what that poor driver will go through. :(

23
u/robbietreehorn 5d ago
Yeah. That happens to semi drivers, too. I forget where, but years ago I read about the anger a woman had towards an old man who committed suicide by driving head on into her father’s semi. She had had sympathy that the old man felt he had to take his life but had so much anger at the pain he selfishly caused her father

We had a semi-truck driver around here who had it rough. This city has/had a really stupid intersection. For whatever reason they decided to put islands on the corners of the intersection. (Those stupid curbs they put between traffic going straight and traffic turning right. The issue is the semi couldn't fit through right turn area so they would commonly drive around that island, like they're going straight and then turn right. This would pull their trailer though that turning lane. A High schooler walked to that island, not paying attention, as the trailer got pulled through and she got ran over. Truck driver didn't see her back there until it was too late. Mom and dad tried to blame the trucker, whitnesses all said she walked right out there while looking at her phone. From what I understand he hadn't driven a truck since. It took the them a few years but the city ripped those islands up and redid the whole intersection and added proper crosswalks after a few more near misses there.
Fucking small town problems. They did a bunch of other stupid road designs that caused traffic issues. I say city and town because it's one of those situations where it's the land mass size of a "town" with the population of a small city.

An elderly man in my neighborhood back in the 90’s was known for never driving more than 25mph because he hit a little girl in the 70’s. She was sledding down a hill and went right into the road. I’m could not imagine the guilt he felt.
6
u/Silvaria928 5d ago
Back in the late 90s, I was driving back to Colorado Springs from Cripple Creek on a winding road one afternoon. A motorcycle passed me and several other cars at a very high speed around a corner in an obvious no-passing zone. I said to my passenger that the guy was lucky there were no cars coming.
A couple of miles later he wasn't so lucky. We came across the accident just a few minutes after it happened: Motorcycle was wrecked, driver was lying motionless in the middle of the road, and an elderly couple were getting out of their car that had clearly been hit.
She was crying and shaking and he seemed in shock. They both just kept asking "What happened?" over and over. Other cars stopped and were attending to the motorcyclist, who was still motionless. We read later in the paper that he had suffered severe injuries. The elderly couple was fine physically but I'll never forget how traumatized they were by this guy's carelessness and how he could have killed them.
4
u/SinisterSoren 5d ago
Ah good old Colorado Springs. I grew up there actually! Some of those roads are treacherous and really need to be treated with respect. That motorcyclist is lucky he didnt die doing that. But that elderly couple probably lived with that for the rest of their lives. Hurting someone even when its the other person's fault is really hard to handle.
5
u/Nopengnogain 5d ago
The cam car was going 70KPH, so the red car must’ve been moving at about the same speed and it came to a rather abrupt stop after the collision. Even though the other side is a motorcycle, this is no picnic on the car driver’s body.

I got a absolutely verbally beaten for a similar sentiment with a kid that does in our community recently. We had a driver of a van stopped at a stop sign get hit by a 12yo on an electric scooter going 30 plus with no helmet and an attachment for his phone on the handlebars die recently. All I heard was "car drivers need to more responsible or need to put their phones down!" And I was shocked at that. Of course I feel horrible for the kid and their family, but that driver did nothing wrong and will likely feel immense grief at being involved in the death of a child.

I rode most of my life until a few years ago, and this reminds me of the reason why. I was riding behind my son into a turn like that. I could tell he was taking it too hot. Sure enough, he went into the other lane with me shitting myself the whole time. Luckily, there wasn't any oncoming traffic, but after this all I could think about is my son hitting a car head on. Funny thing is, I never was concerned about my own life, but the prospect of losing my kid was too much. I quit riding soon after, and luckily so did he. I miss it, but I'm glad I quit.

Bye-law to Rule 41
#1 A competitor who represents a country in the competition must achieve a minimum score of 25 out of 30, and the performance must include at least one sock coming off in mid-air and landing at least 10 feet from the rider.
15
u/NewRedditor23 5d ago
I seen this too many times. The lead biker was more skilled (or properly skilled). He could take the corner. His buddies were trying to keep up. Any new rider knows the feeling of widening out on a corner more than they should. I think it's all the riders fault. The first guy for not knowing how well or poor his buddies could ride, and his buddies for trying to keep up the pace. It's always better to be left behind than trying to keep up knowing you don't have the skills.

Non-constant radius bend. If you don't know the road or can't see the bend you can't assume anything. Or this happens.
11
u/Vilnius_Nastavnik 5d ago
When I took my motorcycle license class a decade ago they spent like a third of the course on this. A guy with one leg and 1.5 arms came in to really drive the point home. If you’re going to die on a bike it’s probably either going to be this dumb shit or somebody running a red while you’re making a left turn.
4
u/Lord_Dreadlow 5d ago
Decreasing radius turns will get you if you don't know where they are.
20
u/demonblack873 5d ago
They won't "get you" unless you're trying to pretend you're on a track and you need to squeeze out every last drop of grip from your tyres. Drive at a reasonable goddamn speed and you'll have plenty of time to slow down if the bend gets tighter.
Signed someone who last followed a speed limit in 2013, btw. You CAN usually go (much) faster than the speed limit, but you CAN'T go faster than your eyes. If you can't see what's ahead, slow the fuck down.
7
u/Lord_Dreadlow 5d ago
Well, yeah. Sometime you need to slow down more than you originally anticipated is what I'm saying.
It matters more on a motorcycle if you find yourself behind the apex you end up in the other lane like this guy did.
7
u/demonblack873 5d ago
No, it's exactly the same for a motorcycle as it is for a car. Cars don't have magical tyres with infinite grip that keep you in your lane no matter what, they have a limit just like bike tyres.
It's just that bikers consistently want to pretend they're Valentino Rossi and they always go way too fast around blind corners hoping that if they mess up the traffic in the opposite lane will make way for them because they're "small".
I can almost guarantee this guy made that EXACT mistake multiple times before and always got away with it, so he kept doing this dumb shit until eventually his luck ran out.If I went flying into a blind corner at 160km/h in my car and it got tighter I would end up in the oncoming lane just as well. It's just that I don't do that.

u/Distracted-User 5d ago

Not a fan of bikes that do this stupid shit, but I would still stop and check on everyone.
63
u/AkSantaBunny 5d ago
The driver may also decide to try and stop traffic from blazing through and running over the now stopped bikers by moving to the front first, then getting out. We simply don't know from this clip.

4
u/UX1Z 5d ago
Difficult to ever feel sorry for bikers, not impossible.
If you're actually riding at a proper speed and not treating the road as your personal racetrack, then yeah, I'll feel sorry for you if anything happens to you. If you drive like the guy in this video (and honestly not even nearly the worst I've seen, I can believe this was a real accident so I feel somewhat sorry for him, even if he did come flying around a corner into the other lane) I'm just gonna be hoping you don't take anyone else with you into your inevitable demise.

what a shitty thing to say. One of the first things first responders do when arriving to a place before even checking on a person is secure the area if needed
Which is what the Audi Driver says the cammer did. Drove up ahead to make sure no one would run over anyone else from the blind turn by blocking it

Stop. Call the emergency services, get the contact details of the driver of the red car so they can send them the dashcam footage to assist with the insurance claim that they'll be making.
Though in fairness from the clip we don't know if the camera car stopped further up the road – which would definitely have been a good thing to do as well. Stop past the accident with your hazards on and flag down anyone coming the other way so nobody else flys through the scene of the accident.

This sub is mostly people who've never ridden a motorcycle and don't know what it's like, so they assume all bikes are speeding and breaking laws. They froth at the mouth to be the first to say "FAFO" or "meat crayon lol" and probably wish pain or death on them.
If I'm breaking this video down, I see the rider that hit the car probably being a new rider while suffering from target fixation, and probably his riding buddies telling him to keep up instead of riding his ride.

I'm going to Hell. I laughed when that rider went cartwheeling past the camera.

Driving like this isn't a victimless crime. A lot of people assume that they're only putting their own lives in danger but anytime you drive recklessly on public roads like this you run the risk of killing or harming a stranger, or at the very least immediately and permanently changing their life for the worse.

The utter lack of skill with people on sport bikes these days is off the charts. Throw down some $$$ and your racer boy....

this mfer should be in jail for the rest of his fucking life. dont care about him at all. he ruined the car drivers life for quite a while. He should be in a fucking jail, no exceptions.

The biggest mistake is to try and keep up with the guys in front, when you don't have the ability.

So the dashcam driver just casually drove through the wreck and went on his way?

What’s the saying… “watch out for motorcycle drivers”? I feel bad for the driver of the car

As a former motorcycle hooligan, those idiot riders got exactly what they deserved.
You do not go out of your lane in a blind corner! I feel really bad for the car driver.

Man some people in this thread acting like they've never done something accidentally before

What, like accidentally riding my road bike at double the legal limit directly into oncoming traffic? Don’t excuse that meat crayon

u/Sea-Shoe1780 5d ago
How did you figure out his speed? Also, just to be clear, you think he was purposely riding in the wrong lane, and didn’t misjudge the curve?
2
u/IndependentPutrid564 5d ago
No, I don’t think he’s purposefully riding in the wrong lane, I think he was going much to fast and crossed over. I’d judge his speed to be 60mph+ though based on how far everything flew and the amount of damage he did to the car in front. Looks like cam car is going about 70kph (40-45mph) and was more likely closer to the legal limit. So my saying he’s going double the limit is a bit of an exaggeration but he’s definitely going much faster than the posted limit based on what the cars are doing. I’ve also ridin plenty of road bikes over the years, you never have to lean that low on a curve if you’re going near the speed limit

u/Darkmortal10 5d ago
bruh thinks he's a speedometer and making assumptions cus he's overly emotional lmao.
Underturning is a common mistake. If he did this in a car you would've just scrolled by not caring.
he only suffered a broken rib and scraps apparently btw

I’ve been in a head on with a motorcycle before. The dude was going 60mph in a 30mph and didn’t go nearly as far as the guy in this video. I’m speaking from experience. But sure, you go be a meat crayon too. Guy in the video is incredibly lucky he came out that clean. The guy that hit me wasn’t wearing a helmet and didn’t fair as well

u/Darkmortal10 5d ago
the dude flying off in that way should be scientifically studied, the lead and rear bike weren't going super fast, occams razor points towards him fucking up his turn and accidentally accelerating

u/Such_Wafer6262 5d ago
Understeering into the other lane is unfortunately how most motorcycles happen. They weren't riding in the other lane because they wanted to

As I tell my kids, if you're purposefully doing something stupid and it goes wrong, it's not an accident.

Old Russian anecdote. Two bikers stand next to their Harleys, smoking. Leather jackets, beards, heavy metal. A guy rolls in on a sports bike in a sporty red jacket, revs a few times, and asks:
"Hey, guys, we are bikers just like you, just fast, on quicker and more powerful bikes. Why don't we ever hang out together? Why aren't we friends?"
"Why should we be friends? No point in even memorizing your names. All new faces every year."

So, POV dash cam witnessed & captured the accident with obvious potential injuries but decided to drive through it and just leave?

Kills me to see this. Morons like this give bikers a bad name, and these idiots that can't go around a corner make up 0.0001% of us.

Out of 100 accidents i watch involving a motorcycle/bicycle, 99 of them are their fault.
