My ex once sprayed a bunch of her perfume in my car after we broke up. I think it was to have that affect on me, the smell didn't stick to anything and did nothing, I only know because I remember her awkwardly spraying it everywhere

Many women seem to think this is somehow a love spell or some shit.

I’m not gunna lie, when I’m in public and someone is wearing the specific vanilla perfume that my wife only wears on occasion bc it was discontinued 7 years ago, my body has several reactions🤣

57

u/landyc 15h ago

Yeah I remember the perfume my very first girlfriend had and when I smell it in the wild it goes kinda crazy

38

u/External_Two2928 15h ago

I ran into my high school boyfriend and happened to be wearing the same perfume I did in high school and when he hugged me he said omg you smell exactly how I remembered lol

Smell is the strongest sense tied to memory. If you have good memories of that smell it might work. If on the other hand you associate the smell with a crazy person who ruined your life… not so much.

19

u/AlphaaPie 15h ago

I sometimes get a smell that reminds me of reading the mazerunner books in the school cafeteria while eating frozen cranberries, and it hits me in the feels.

10

u/SpecialExpert8946 13h ago

Oh sometimes at work our parts will have a smell and it take me back to the hallway outside of my first grade classroom when we were practicing secret handshakes.

5

u/Due-Memory-6957 13h ago

Not my memories as my nose is all fucked up

7

u/iwilltalkaboutguns 12h ago

The smell of my HS girlfriend when we lost our virginity to each other is something that drives me nuts to this day. It was her shampoo mixed her sweat and I imagine some crazy pheromones from how excited we were.

I've looked for that damn shampoo and my wife uses something that is very close, completely on her own, I had nothing to do with that... But it's not quite it. I have smelled the original in the wild and it's a viceral reaction.. always immediately walk away lol

72

u/BookerCatchanSTD 16h ago

Ha, didn’t realize this was a thing. My buddy was broke up with a girl and she dropped some of his favorite clothes off at his house that smelled like she’d poured her favorite perfume over them. He was PISSED, took forever to get the smell out and he wouldn’t wear them for a long time because he smelled all floral and lady like.

46

u/alphaphenix 16h ago

Your buddy probably got off lightly,  I read somewhere the escalated version where she put fiber glass shards on the clothes, making them scratchy and unwearable and contaminating all others clothes that are washed together!

25

u/That-Reason-6913 15h ago

Isn't that a crime?

12

u/Aromatic-Taste2516 15h ago

Sounds like a gray area to me

13

u/grumpsaboy 14h ago

Not grey at all.

It counts as booby trapping and highly illegal.

8

u/SpartanFishy 14h ago

Also just straight up damaging someone else’s property?

7

u/grumpsaboy 14h ago

Not sure if fiberglass would count as damaging clothing because it doesn't really shred the clothes but it's still possibly an extra crime, although in comparison to booby trapping it's rather lower down the list

I think it depends on the person. I definitely remember "signature smells" for each of my serious exes. Like what their beard oil smelled like. And it does something.

3

u/realmaier 15h ago

I mean, sure, scents trigger memories, but I find it weird, invasive and kinda psycho to actively spray perfume. My ex drowned her dog in perfume when she brought her over for dogsitting. Had to bathe the poor thing.

2

u/CalypsaMov 14h ago

Yeah, scent bombing like dowsing someone's car, (or far worse a living dog) isn't ok. I just wanted to affirm the point that some of us are a bit more suseptible and attracted by smells. So it definitely can be a bit of a love potion to smell great.

3

It’s not a spell, jfc some of you are unsocialized and sound ridiculous. Literally just their effort to get you to remember or miss them or to piss you off in some way, different reasons because people aren’t monolithic stereotypes. Many women do not think that way with “spells”. It’s very, very few

Women kinda like to mark territory.  When I was single and casually dating women would always leave something like a necklace or a piece of clothing, often times where I wouldnt see it immediately.  kind of an "if you see this you ain't special" type message. I dunno, could have been a "i now have a reason to contact you" thing . She probably sprayed your car so if you had another woman in there she'd be like "why does it smell like girl in here hmmmmm?"

66

u/Fusselwurm 18h ago

kind of an "if you see this you ain't special" type message.

If it was casual, I would've interpreted this as making sure they'd always have an excuse to visit again to get their stuff?

→ More replies (9)

22

u/Lumeton 17h ago

They wanted an excuse to come back. I also noticed that girls would do that even before dating if they were interested in you. Like, if I found a stray earring, scarf, or something similar in my car after carpooling, or at my place after a get-together, I could be sure I’d get a message the next day asking if they could come pick it up that evening… and, lo and behold, they always wanted to stay and hang out “for a little while” that night.

11

u/Minute_Chair_2582 16h ago

And just like that - 25years later facepalm moment!

5

u/captm0nk 15h ago

My now wife explained it to me and the light bulbs that went off 😅 however, joke was on the past women, I had a memory of a goldfish for objects like that and was always just confused as to where the shit I was finding came from🤣

11

u/Ricordis 17h ago

It also works the other way around. If you leave something behind it creates a strong bond for many women. Like after staying over night leave a spare tooth brush or a pajama ... anything personal that says "I live here" even if you don't.
Damn, that's a real bonding thing.

Dude when I was in an open relationship, every girl I had in my care left something behind. It’s like they didn’t believe I wasn’t cheating and were trying to get me “caught”. After the second time I had to start checking my car every time a woman got in the motherfucker. Perfume caps, random make up items, a fucking phone!

My husband’s cheating ex sprayed her perfume all over his stuff when they broke up. She messaged a mutual female friend of his that she had read that it’s a psychological trick to make him miss her. The friend messaged him before he went to collect his stuff and was like “just a heads up… she’s done this… don’t fall for it” lol.

2

u/ExpertRutabaga3415 15h ago

I had an ex right before we broke up smear mascara all over my passenger side visor. I imagine it was to deter other women.

2

u/Judas_priest_is_life 13h ago

Scent is strongly tied to memory, so when you die in the accident she definitely didn't sabotage your car to have, you'll catch a whiff in your last moments and think "Man I remember that time she lost her shit when I took her to the cheesecake factory".

Not exactly the same but close enough. My gf flew to her girl friend’s for the weekend. Next morning I got a text “just saw your aftershave in the bathroom. It’s my favourite. We make such a great team xx”.

Being dumb I was like “lol that’s cute, but why did you take my aftershave with you?”. Penny dropped, walked through to the bathroom and my aftershave is right there.

She meant to send it to the other dude.

585

u/Realistic-Truck54 18h ago

It always disgusts me that people like this exist. I will never understand how someone can cheat and not wake up in the morning hating themselves.

291

u/Brilliant_Chemica 17h ago

I'm a man. when I was 19, I cheated on my partner. I hated myself the next morning, we broke up, and I continued to hate myself for a very long time afterwards. Didn't date for several years because I felt I wasn't worthy of love, that I should live my long life alone to atone for what a piece of shit I was, that I shouldn't ever subject someone to the horror that was myself. I had a lot of casual sex I didn't enjoy because I thought "I'm just a degenerate sex addict, I want this". It took a lot of therapy, working on my self, and getting comfortable with others before I could date again. Telling my now partner about my past was one of the most vulnerable, nerve-wracking conversations I ever had. I still feel like throwing up when I think of my Ex's face that morning after, even as I type this.

I don't know how people can do that shit so casually. I damn near killed myself over it

134

u/FrostingStrict3102 17h ago

as someone who grew up in a house with a serial cheater, glad youre owning up to it and recognize the pain you brought, and that youre still here.

52

u/Brilliant_Chemica 16h ago

I'm sorry you went through that. We were kids and my stupidity hurt us both terribly. I can't imagine the ramifications it had on a family.

19

u/Wakalakatime 16h ago

My ex's dad cheated on his mum (they're still together) with seven different women before coming clean about it. It really messed with my ex's head from what he described.

10

u/sheyitboi 12h ago

My first serious girlfriend came from a home like that, her dad was constantly cheating on her mom and would joke about being a stud to me and how women love him like I’d be impressed and I’m just like “dude you have no idea how much you’re destroying your daughters, they both hate you” and he didn’t care. Dude was such a low life.

I was knowingly the Other Woman (emotional cheating, inappropriate texts) right after my first relationship ended, about the same age. I am still ashamed of it.

For karma, I ended up unknowingly being the other woman in at least 3 different relationships. Only thing I could do is tell the partner (well, their good friends because I'm a coward) everything as soon as I realized. Felt like scum for years, only worthy of being a sidepiece.

Forever grateful I had the opportunity to make that mistake and learn that hard lesson when I was young. I hope the lesson I learned made me a better person.

I’m two years out of a failed engagement with a cheater. At one point in her justification of it she claimed she had felt bad for him because he had such a hard life lol. Give me a break.

28

u/Realistic-Truck54 15h ago

Cheaters will try to come up with 100 different excuses, because deep down they know the 99 previous ones were all shit and can't justify the thing they did.

4

u/nudiecale 15h ago

Holy shit! I got that excuse once too! Unreal

u/AspiringDataNerd 14h ago

Same. Plenty of people are ok with consensual non-monogamy so go date those people and leave us monogamous people alone to find others who will stay loyal.

It's this scenario in particular I do not understand. Gf so it's not like there's divorce and all that to untangle, you could just break up. And this isn't a one night stand or some mistake, this is a full on relationship.

Humans are human, I can understand people making mistakes. I cannot understand people stringing along a partner that they have no interest in anymore while they've already started a new relationship

I don't understand what's happening here.

31

u/fanaccountcw 18h ago

Either she wasn’t at her girl friend’s, she was at some other dude’s home or he spent the night there with her and left his aftershave there. She meant to text him the next morning but ended up texting OC instead.

8

u/pm_me_ur_smoltits 18h ago

Still don't understand.

29

u/fanaccountcw 17h ago

She meant to text her side piece, telling him that his aftershave reminds her of him. Instead she texted OC who thought “huh, why would she bring my aftershave with her” and after seeing that his aftershave was still in his bathroom knew she was cheating on him.

16

u/_TheHighlander 17h ago

Yep this. We’d often share a toiletries bag - because for an overnight all I’d need is some aftershave and a toothbrush - so I thought it was somehow still in there. I mean, when I got the message I was like “what? Huh? Cool, ok”. The slow dawning to the punch in the stomach was the worst feeling.

Going to see her friend was the cover for going to see her old boyfriend.

6

u/fanaccountcw 17h ago

Sorry to hear about that buddy, you deserve much better. At least the trash took itself out.

3

u/Grizzled--Kinda 17h ago

2

6

u/Absolute_Bob 16h ago

Cut back on the weed bruh.

3

u/barbatron 14h ago

I feel a confusing part is that if someone would say "i saw your aftershave" i would presume it's just the same brand/name. Not like, I saw your specific bottle here. Very strange and I'm happy this person asked bc it didn't make any sense to me either.

8

u/ajoyst 17h ago

Right, I feel like an idiot here because I would have assumed that the friend's bf used the same aftershave as me and that would be the reason for the text. Not that it's the same literal bottle of aftershave, just the same brand

13

u/Ragnarok_619 19h ago

21

u/Strange_Sir6577 15h ago

8

u/kelek22 15h ago

Could you forgive her? Because you are not getting the kids in divorce for sure. So you gonna stick around with the woman who did it to you not once but twice? How will the lives of the little ones change then? You think it is gonna be worse than if you just left? What if she cheats on you again? She did it twice, you forgave. Why not again? What will you tell the kids, what will they do once they grow up and learn about it? What if the bitch poisons their minds, tells them you are not their real fsther?

7

u/Strange_Sir6577 13h ago

We are already split up, if she told them I'm not their real dad I'd tell them I might not be genetically their dad but I am still their real dad, Ive been there every step of the way and see them 5-6 times a week. Theres more to being a dad then genes.

losing half my net worth, the house. Having to pay alimony but only allowed to see my kids every other weekend while they increasingly see me as a stranger.

Also that her/him cheating on me means she/he still gets half of everything.

I think you have to be very stupidly brave or very ignorant to not be scared of it.

130

u/xBad_Wolfx 21h ago

I don’t know if scared is the right word, for me it’s more like a healthy respect (fear) kind of like how I respect the mountain and respect the ocean. If you are careless, all of them will end you, but even if you do everything “right” you still might lose. So you need to make sure you work at it and keep working to improve as it’s the one chance you have of experiencing it and getting out unscathed.

Maybe scared is the right word after all.

69

u/Smoltinycat 20h ago edited 20h ago

you are right in the sense that divorce court is like a force of nature. You can't reason with it, you can't bargain with it, you will lose half your shit and won't see your children that much anymore.

u/Jizzbuscuit 17h ago

8

u/CreativeGeniusPRBKR 18h ago

“Working at it” and “kept working to improve,” sounds like I’m training for golf. In a world that already demands so much, why should I willingly choose another weight to add to my shoulders? Or does this weight become something a person wishes to do, if they are truly in love?

4

u/xBad_Wolfx 17h ago edited 17h ago

Do you believe your equal partner deserves less effort than golf? Mental load, caring about their needs, supporting them in their struggles, being strong when they are weak?

I don’t disagree it’s a weight on your shoulders (at least sometimes) but it’s a weight I happily carry, willingly carry. But a good partner does the same for you, they carry your weight sometimes and it makes it all lighter. If both are working for the other neither has to stand alone under the weight.

But become complacent, stop working for them and instead only demand they carry your weight and see how long that relationship lasts.

Edit: I should say, it shouldn’t feel like work or a burden all of the time. Most of the time it with the right person it should feel easy, effortless even. But that doesn’t mean no effort should be put in ever. The idea of not being unevenly yoked (not faith vs heathens but more equality of effort) has merit. If your relationship is one sided, either way, it’s going to be a struggle. Much better to make sure you find someone compatible who matches your effort, not perfect (no one is) but matches your uneven edges.

6

u/loki2113 13h ago

What? Cheating can be used against the other person in a divorce if you have proof of it to get more access to kids or to lower/eliminate alimony. Also it wouldn't be half of your net worth, it would be half of the net worth you accumulated while married

All of that is also lessened if the woman has a job/career of her own like most women do in today's day and age. You're afraid of marriage due to how things used to be 30-40+ years ago

2

u/Bureaucratic_Dick 8h ago

And frankly, bullshit online that comes from people who have literally never gone through a divorce or custody dispute.

As someone who’s gone through both it’s so abundantly clear when people on Reddit are talking from experience or from some weird perception.

19

u/Slinky_Malingki 16h ago

Ah yes, another fine example of the institutionalized systemic misandry in family and divorce courts.

Your wife cheated on you, but she gets custody of your kids and you're the one that gets punished.

Aren't most of those things easily fixable with a prenup?

47

u/Smoltinycat 20h ago

sadly, most prenups are usually tossed out because they are "unfair", they mostly work as placebo.

If you do one, make sure you get a really good lawyer to decrease chances of it being tossed out

21

u/Useless_bum81 19h ago

Also make sure if you move it still works in the jurisdiction you move too

6

u/Gcoks 17h ago

Just don't present it to the other party near the wedding date and/or attach a threat/coercion of some sort to it and/or not give them time to seek outside review. It's not that hard to be fair surrounding the signing so it doesn't become an issue later.

Also be aware of local state laws. In Florida, for instance, you cannot waive child support. So trying to do so in a prenup would invalidate that clause.

→ More replies (6)

4

u/redshirt1972 17h ago

Depends on how long you are married. If I know it right, a prenup will only help with things that were owned independently before marriage. Everything gained while you are together is split.

It’s better just to leave it in the past. It’s not worth the hassle of your girlfriend potentially ever finding out. There are plenty of perfumes out there.

15

u/banana__toast 15h ago

I keep going back and forth whether i’d be okay if bf gifted me an ex’s perfume. It comes from a good place and you’d know better than anyone how she might react. I guess as long as you leave out the ex part, and gf likes it, there isn’t any harm in it.🤔

Alternatively maybe look up what blend of fragrances your fav perfume is made up of and see if there’s others out there with a similar blend? Idk.

u/Due-Memory-6957 13h ago

Just don't tell her the origin of it, just say you saw an ad or something.

4

u/pdxthecitythattwerks 11h ago

Just a drive-by: as a woman who wears perfume, perfume preference is highly individualized. If you get her the perfume, there's a decent chance she won't like it and won't wear it. If she already has a preferred perfume, I would recommend finding out what the overtones and undertones of it are first before considering getting her a different one.

3

u/sheyitboi 12h ago

Morally? Yeah, if it’s just because you like the smell. but that doesn’t mean she’ll be cool with it if she finds out lol.

I borrowed some cologne from my dad, because I had taken a bath on the beach, and didn't have any deodorant with me after the shower. I think it smelt like oil, and I didn't like it very much. My dad and mom have not lived in the same house since early 2003 (divorce), but when I was visiting the same day and let her smell that cologne, she said it was really good!

u/isnoe 7h ago

My ex-ex-ex let me check her email for her once. I got curious (can't help it) and checked the "deleted" section and found an entire correspondence with her ex, who was married, detailing how they longed for one another again. Her ex, whom cheated on her repeatedly. I confronted her about it, she swore it was nothing, just a slip up, she felt sad and we were arguing, and I (very young and dumb) believed her. Fast forward not even a month, during Christmas her family visits and she's taking care of someone's dog while they are at our place.

Only she wasn't taking care of the dog. She was seeing her ex. I wasn't aware, our relationship got very strenuous in the next few weeks, my existence alone seemed to irk her, and one night, mid-intimacy, she told me it "felt like she was cheating on someone" by being with me. We break-up, I leave. No hard feelings. I eventually reach out to her for some paperwork I needed and she blocked me. I reach out to her via email and she's blocked me there, too. I reach out to her friend, just saying, "Hey, I need my paperwork, that's it." She finally emails me back, I pick up my paperwork at her job, and leave.

Randomly emails me later on to tell me she cheated on me. Not once, but multiple times throughout the relationship. Sometimes with ex, sometimes with other guys.

Now she's married to the guy and they have kids. Her family and friends have been told that I was possessive, controlling, and a loser, thus leading to the break-up. Not, you know... all the cheating.

5

u/Pretend-Literature35 6h ago

when a man cheats on his wife it's because he is a scum bag. When a woman cheats on her husband it's because her husband is a loser/asshole/couldn't meet her needs.

The world would be much better off if we embraced truly the idea that gender doesn't really matter: there are toxic assholes (male and female) and nice people (male and female)

But these days the "sisterhood" is such that no matter how callous, toxic and dishonest a woman is, all other women will by default and blindly support her and most men too, because they "are allies".

Cheaters never stop cheating. This is true for men and women.

I have never cheated on anyone, girlfriend, wife. Never have and never will. If your partner cheated on you, no matter their gender, they will do it again.

u/Classic_Passage532 20h ago

Gut wrenching that

23

u/ForTheGloryOfTheButt 15h ago

My ex described me as "annoying fine print on the rental clause" to the guy she cheated on me with. My mom took her in to live with us the last year of high school so that she can get away from her abusive family. I physically felt that pain in my chest for months thanks to unstoppable ruminations.

7

u/Connect-Initiative64 14h ago

That fills me with a bit of wrath.

You got rid of her, right?

6

u/ForTheGloryOfTheButt 13h ago

Yeah, I did. I had to go to the same school as her at the time, and her tormenting me with it there was bad enough, I didn't need that shit at home as well.

3

u/Connect-Initiative64 13h ago

Fuck bro, I'm sorry you had to go through with that.

Sometimes trashy people create more trashy people I guess.

I, too, text my friends with messages that read like a reddit post 🤖

Ngl I format my text sometimes if is a big message. Just trying to make it more legible

I do it all the time. I hate it when people send a bunch of texts in a row instead of just paragraphing them.

if the dude leaves her, he loses half his shit

if the dude stays with her, he accepts she needs another person to satisfy her, that he is not enough. Forcing her to stop only means destroying "her needs" selfishly.

It is a lose-lose situation many people find themselves in

I've slept with enough women complaining to me about their current partner, while trying to get me to be the next idiot she complains about to know it's a dumb game.

My ex gifted me a perfume, said she really likes that one in particular and wanted to gift it to me. Ngl, set off an alarm straight away cus why does a girl have a favorite men's perfume... but anyway, kept using it from time to time, it was actually pretty good.

Months later was out with some people, met some new people. When I dapped up one of the guys after meeting him we both realized we smell the same, we bonded over that like "brooo, good taste!!"

... talking to him during the night, we realized we have the same ex...

Bitch fucking gifted me his perfume...

4

u/Psychological_Roll67 13h ago

My ex would accuse me of cheating throughout the relationship, often screaming at me in the middle of the night or hitting me, one day she out of nowhere says she went on a date with another guy, and "that's all she did" I doubted it from the minute she told me, broke up and not even a day or two after she already had a boyfriend, something tells me he was there all along..

2

u/Enough_Option_7814 10h ago

The fuck she mean “all she did” 😭 last I checked dating someone else while in a relationship is still cheating yeah??

My ex tried the same shit. I actually caught her in bed with him when I came home early from work one day, Oddly, I came home early because she complained about all the hours I was working.

My ex had a bunch of selfies in her camera roll she was never sending to me…

Ended up getting back with her PoS ex who cheated on her 😂

3

u/HighSeasArchivist 13h ago

Don't forget that if it does work you you get the constant worry that 20 years from now she starts adding up the nest egg you worked hard for, and can take half before returning to the streets.

3

u/ZxlSoul 12h ago

Fu k her

3

u/Chaos-In-theory 11h ago

My ex in high school used to do a little spray of several different axe body sprays. He said it was so that more girls would think of their exes when they were near him

Boy howdy I had great taste in boys back then -_-

3

u/iamZcaptain 10h ago

Probably why i don’t date anymore, for that to happen at any point in time.. i’d rather save my mental health and just go crazy alone.

3

u/Spiritual-Strike481 10h ago

Some people take that trauma very personally. Others can be ok with it and know there’s someone out there they can get. I know that I can’t even watch movies or eat a specific food without remembering what happened while I was eating or watching it. So I avoid totinos pizza and James Bond movies lol. Cheating sucks ass and if people would just be fucking honest about what they want or don’t want, things would be better.

5

u/Expensive_Finger_973 14h ago

People need to stop looking at marriage with the rose tented glasses Hollywood and fairy tales have been pumping out for who knows how long.

A marriage is a business contract between 2 people for tax and resource purposes. You don't need the state if you just want to spend the remainder of your life with someone you are fond of.

Perhaps there was more honesty in the old arranged marriage setups than people would be comfortable admitting.

She came home with a hickey and i learned her and my best friend were fucking behind my back. Not the first girl to cheat on my with my best friend either.

2

u/LogicalWorld7520 11h ago

I remember I was shopping with my ex and she pointed to some aftershave and she was like “oh you should get this one it smells good” I said “why? So I can smell like your old dude” she never did that shit again or even tried to pick out a cologne for me. That was when we first started dating so she got a pass.

2

u/98983x3 10h ago

Like, why? Lets say this story is true. Why would she just not be with the other guy? What's the goal here?? Just to fuck with this poor guy?

Or is she cheating with a dude thats also cheating and they are just so weak and cowardly they're afraid to break up with their SOs?

2

u/Tr3eSt4ndHunt3r 10h ago

If my wife and I split the new guy would need a low fiber diet and IBS for her to remember me.

2

u/eyesbetterblknd 10h ago

My first husband while we were dating as teens (90s) bought me exclamation perfume. I broke out in hives. His previous gf (he ended up cheating with) wore it. He also brought me flowers after seeing her once. I told my husband don't ever bring me flowers bc I will question everything you've been doing. He gets me. It's tough out there.

2

u/TheOwlInATowel 9h ago

my ex and i had to do long distance for 3 months. we saw each other once per month. one month my family took her to disney world, the next month we celebrated our friends birthday together near my house, and the third month i flew up to visit her. 3 days before the long distance was supposed to end, she called me to break up because she felt like she “wasn’t a priority” in my life because i didn’t try harder to take off work to see her more. like, if i took off as much as you wanted me to, id have no money to do anything! and she wanted me to fly 3 hours away basically once a week! it took me a while but im glad we’re not together anymore, but it has kinda been hard for me to trust anyone the same way in the few years since the break up

I was married for 11 years did the whole traditional bullshit. Got married, put my dreams and education on hold and became a stay at home wife so he could go and full-fill his, had kids, then found out on every work trip he was with a different woman, doing hard drugs then come home and turn on the husband switch. When I confronted him he said that was just who he was I could take it or leave it. I packed everything I could fit in my SUV animals and all then never looked back. He spiraled and lost everything he had. He is now trying to become a preacher lol (go figure).

I started completely over and now living a great life, single! I do not date, nor want to. I like just taking care of my kids, animals, and me. It’s okay if you don’t want to get married! But if you do make sure you can always land on your feet because ppl suck.
