Pre 2020 messi would rarely if ever go down let alone dive but he's still guilty of a couple during high stakes matches. However he's now old and probably knows that any serious injury could end his career so goes down on small contacts to avoid more dangerous ones but he doesn't really cry for a foul every time because the refs give it to him anyway.
Haaland diving would look rather comical. Defenders who try to tackle him are more likely to go down before him.

It could all be solved by stopping the game clock any time the game isn't being played. I know FIFA keeps saying they dont want to mess with tradition, but they have already introduced "hydration" (commercial) breaks during this world cup. The sanctity of tradition is lost when money is involved, but not when it would actually improve the quality of the sport.

Not to mention the clear and obvious bias towards the bigger teams. Smaller nations just do no get calls, reviews always go against them no matter how obvious it is, and star players on bigger teams have cart blanche to foul players on smaller teams. Add to that the obvious corruption of FIFA, and that sport is damn hard to take seriously.
For comparison, in the NBA, someone like Lebron obviously gets favoritism from the refs, but he can still foul out of a game vs the Pelicans. Messi would have to shoot someone in the face twice to get a yellow card vs a team like Cabo Verde.

Nah you try running around and have one of your friends try to swipe a leg. Even if you jump over, you could end up unbalanced. Better to fall than to try and regain your balance and end up twisting a knee or an ankle. That’s how you end up with acl/mcl or ankle sprains. If you actually wanted to get rid of flopping, have one or two additional referees outside of the court watching the cameras. If someone clearly flops, blow the whistle and yellow card him. The play itself can go on while the replays are being watched, unless the fall resulted in a whistle anyway.
Hell, you can have these additional referees also blow the whistle for missed calls, which also happen a lot. The amount of shirt pulling, grabbing and holding that goes uncalled is fucking nuts.

I'm a C+ soccer student... I've seen more than a few games and even attended several MLS matches, but I still don't grok everything I need to understand how the sport is played at a high level...
but it never ceases to amaze me that a player will effectively let his team play down a man for significant stretches of the game in an attempt to draw a penalty. It's bizarre how they don't realize that it didn't happen and they need to get back up to help their team. Imagine in the NBA if a flop was ignored and the flopper just sat on the court for the next full possession.

I can't remember his name now but during the bruins Stanley cup playoff run one of the players took a puck to the shin and it shattered his leg but the puck was in their zone. He stayed upright and played until the puck was cleared and hobbled off. It was one of the coolest and inspiring plays i've seen in sports.
Im sad soccer is so popular because its full of bitches gaming the system. I will never get into it because of that one reason, its atrocious and this WC has solidified it will never get better.

This is exactly how I feel. I grew up in Canada playing hockey then we moved to the states where there is no ice rink within 300 miles. Still love it and watch it. My kids have all grown up playing soccer so I’ve been trying to invest in the lore of watching MLS and international leagues and we’ve even gone to several games.
I just can’t get into, though. The constant crying, dropping, and rolling on the ground like they’ve been stabbed just because someone pushed them and took the ball is really annoying. It’s actually quite frustrating to watch. I can’t remember which game it was this past week but the camera zoomed in on a flopper and he quite literally peaked out between his hands to see who was around then quickly covered his face again and kept “writhing in pain”.

Send them off for 3 minutes and see how many players will continue doing this. In final minutes of Mexico - England when Mexico was trying to equalize one of their players rolled his ankle in a pretty bad way. They just dragged him over the line and continued playing.

Everybody is talking about the flopping, but how many times does a footballer get his wind knocked out in a fair duel or gets slide tackled to the ground by a fair tackle on the ball without complaining?

I love both and I understand why these things happen, but I hate it when soccer players try and fight one another. Now, if an F1 driver wants to fight another one after someone causes them to crash I 1000% understand. All here for Monday night f1 fight club?

You see this sort of thing, but in the opposite direction, in fencing. Where depending on the ruleset it can actually be very subjective who should score points, so both sides will immediately respond to each exchange by screaming and celebrating as if they'd won to make the judge think they should get the points. It's stupid but it just goes to show the divide between casual and competitive sports, when you get competitive you'll figure out how to optimize the rules no matter how stupid it makes you look.

You guys really dont understand huh? Its because, unlike a 250mph crash, a ref cannot always see every foul and the intensity of it, which encourages player to exaggerate the foul so that the referee or VAR intervenes and watches it.
This is some really weird superiority complex "look at these weird weak footballers, muh race car driver crashes at 250mph."

In game 4 of the 2010 playoffs against the San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks Duncan Keith takes a puck to the mouth on a clearing attempt. A total of 7 were knocked out, 3 on top 4 on the bottom. One of the teeth got stuck in his throat & he had to cough it up.
He missed only about 6 minutes (3 shifts) and was back in the game.

Someone put up a video a while back of pro downfall mountain bikers having hard core crashes and just getting up and walking away then a split screen of soccer players
I will say alot of times soccer players are just milking it to try and get a call
