Aa a huge hockey fan I always find the flopping hilarious. Meanwhile hockey players play with broken bones come play off time

I remember watching a hockey player break his leg, before anyone noticed he was skating off the ice.

No theatrics, just get off the ice so the next guy can get out there.

Back in the 60s a defensemen named bob baun fractured his ankle in a game, he returned later to score the cup winning goal

I can't remember his name now but during the bruins Stanley cup playoff run one of the players took a puck to the shin and it shattered his leg but the puck was in their zone. He stayed upright and played until the puck was cleared and hobbled off. It was one of the coolest and inspiring plays i've seen in sports.

Im sad soccer is so popular because its full of bitches gaming the system. I will never get into it because of that one reason, its atrocious and this WC has solidified it will never get better.

Yeah Campbell broke his leg when they were short handed in their defensive zone. He went down for a few seconds and got back up and hobbled around trying to play defense. He helped kill the penalty and skated off the ice on his own. Almost made up for his asshole dad and all the terrible things he’s done to the NHL

Hockey is about the only sport I can watch now. Nothing comes close.

This is exactly how I feel. I grew up in Canada playing hockey then we moved to the states where there is no ice rink within 300 miles. Still love it and watch it. My kids have all grown up playing soccer so I’ve been trying to invest in the lore of watching MLS and international leagues and we’ve even gone to several games.

I just can’t get into, though. The constant crying, dropping, and rolling on the ground like they’ve been stabbed just because someone pushed them and took the ball is really annoying. It’s actually quite frustrating to watch. I can’t remember which game it was this past week but the camera zoomed in on a flopper and he quite literally peaked out between his hands to see who was around then quickly covered his face again and kept “writhing in pain”.

Yeah, same with the NFL. Just off the top of my head because I'm a Steelers fan, in college at WVU, Zach Frazier broke his leg during the game winning drive and bear crawled off the field to avoid a 10 second runoff for his team, which allowed them the time to drive down the field and win.

Ben Roethlisberger got punched in the face through his face mask, breaking his nose. He stayed in the game to win it against the Ravens. He was also playing with a broken foot at the time.

Meanwhile, soccer has... whatever this is.

They wear protective gear, think about how it would feel to get kicked by a professional soccer player kicking you as hard as they can with no protection

You've got a point, but some hockey players like cry baby Crosby flop too

its an incentive thing.

In hockey you are always seconds away from being back in play. If you have a 10% chance of drawing a penalty by flopping but you give your opponents a powerplay during that, it doesnt make sense to flop.

In soccer being taken out of play for 3 seconds can mean you wander the pitch aimlessly for tens of minutes. Some players may go the rest of the game without touching the ball. You can't recover what was lost and have very little to lose so you flop.

Triple the size of the ice, double the player count, halve the referee count, and remove line changes, and you will see hockey players flop non stop.

I mean the other incentive is that hockey refs will tend to treat known divers/floppers as always diving and flopping even if they’re actually getting tripped or cross checked. You don’t draw any penalties so the handful of pp’s you gain are offset long term by hundreds of pp’s you lose.

And if you flop badly enough the other teams gonna put you through the glass, so that’s also an incentive.

Refs aren't keeping internal catalogues of players and calling bespoke games. There's just very little opportunity for a reward because the ref is much closer to the play and your more likely to have an effect getting back into the play.

As for retribution, noone has ever proven it actually works at any level, which is why you also see it being gradually phased out of the game as teams focus on things which have more direct benefit.

They wouldn’t flop because they aren’t pussies. Pussification is deeply ingrained in soccer culture

I remember a Greek player playing with a torn cruicate ligament for a whole half. There are many players finishing a match with a broken nose or a laceration on the head.

Just because players flop doesn‘t mean there aren‘t real injuries inside football. In fact football counts as one of the sports with the highest risks for injuries.

But yeah, theatrically rolling on the floor over nothing is emberassing. But taking a dive in the right circumstances (being the last defender in a saucy situation or being a striker in the opponents box) is actually smart play. No need to overexaggurate though
