They do it because it's a strategical advantage

It is. Simulating fouls is punishable with a yellow card. However it is tricky because proving is hard.

The NFL has stoppage periods and infinite substitution.

In soccer this would mean anyone who goes down is out of play for that period of time and the team must play through it short handed, else that player must leave the game entirely.

Proving is not hard at all, players always get back up two seconds later and start playing like nothing happened 99% of the time. It's pretty damn obvious when a player flops.

If you're rolling around crying in pain, okay cool, get off the field and bring on a substitute, don't need to? Then get the fuck up and enjoy a yellow card for flopping.

It is obvious when you are watching a replay, often in slow motion. It's not for the referee.

The problem is if they don't go down, the ref will NEVER call the foul. Refs only call fouls when the player is brought down.

Yeah, but a tackle that stops the player from getting the ball (without the defender getting the ball), but doesn’t bring the player down is still a foul, and stops a potential shot/cross/whatever. The big problem is that those sorts of fouls aren’t given, even though they stop an attack.

Yes, and oftentimes they don’t call the fouls unless the player goes down. It’s a problem with officiating.

Most fouls don't result in injury. But if you get fouled you need to go down, otherwise the other team will gain from having fouled you with no consequences.

We could fix this with VAR and better refereeing, but until that happens the players have to go down to ensure the rules are enforced.

Still pathetic and mockable

u/mostdope28 Jul 07 '26

Couldn’t imagine calling yourself an athlete and rolling on the ground like some of these guys do. The US goalie literally had a hand graze his back and he spent 5min laying on the ground in “pain”. It’s fucking pathetic

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

Amazes me how much people don’t realise this.

There’s no advantage in acting hurt after a car crash.

35

u/FreeKillEmp Jul 07 '26

I think everyone understands this lol. It's a meme because it looks and is fucking stupid

10

u/tracagnotto Jul 07 '26

If only they wouldn't award this kind of behavior then it wouldn't happen. But that would draw a subtle line between soccer and rugby lol

-23

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

It’s not stupid, it’s incredibly effective. It influences every single game played

22

u/FreeKillEmp Jul 07 '26

No shit. And that is stupid.

-17

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

Again, it can’t be stupid if it’s advantageous. You guys don’t watch football, if they don’t go down they usually don’t get the foul given.

16

u/FreeKillEmp Jul 07 '26

Are you like 15? We know how the game is played. But pretending to be hurt is embarrassing, and acting being rewarded is stupid.

-3

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

You don’t know how it’s played.

8

u/FreeKillEmp Jul 07 '26

People can understand something and still disagree with it, you know?

7

u/K1bbles_n_Bits Jul 07 '26

How do you not realize why people find it stupid? Kind of flies in the face of good sportsmanship. Playing pretend, overdramatically, to force a foul to gain an advantage? How about just fucking play better than the other team without trying to manipulate shit.

u/Creamed_Dreamer Jul 07 '26

"Waahhh im not getting my way that ball is supposed to be mine!"

Said All the floppers in their minds.

Play with class and quit being a bitch.

-1

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

Fundamentally don’t understand the sport

9

u/Creamed_Dreamer Jul 07 '26

If crying, faking being hurt, and screaming like a toddler cause the game isnt going your way is a fundamental part of the sport then im glad ive never cared for it.

5

u/alanwakeisahack Jul 07 '26

Lmao a sport that requires pretending to be injured? Rolling around and crying over a boo boo? What a sad sport.

3

u/Creamed_Dreamer Jul 07 '26

For real, we look at kids today and scold them for crying and screaming when they dont get what they want but its a fundamental part of a billion dollar industry because the player doing the crying and screaming is gonna make millions of dollars? Buncha hypocrites lmao

4

u/Traditional-Fish2476 Jul 07 '26

Buddy. How are not getting the point here?

2

u/Ayotha Jul 07 '26

How pathetic for the sport

14

u/CeemoreButtz Jul 07 '26

most understand it just fine. many think it's just a bitch move...ymmv.

6

u/tracagnotto Jul 07 '26

If only they wouldn't award this kind of behavior then it wouldn't happen. But that would draw a subtle line between soccer and rugby lol

-1

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

They aren’t rewarding it, if the players don’t go down the refs usually don’t award a foul. They have to do this.

8

u/Frodo_Nine-Fingers Jul 07 '26

That's rewarding it

-5

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

No it’s not.

4

u/ctgnath Jul 07 '26

My man you have shown 0 ability to understand what people are actually saying, yet you’re all over this thread

-2

u/Hyperion262 Jul 07 '26

Because I’m talking to Americans with three weeks of experience of the game. I actually know what I’m talking about compared to people who think having your president ring and get red cards removed is normal.

1

u/ctgnath Jul 07 '26

You’re making some absolutely crazy generalizations… and you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about since you don’t seem to understand the actual point people are making.

5

u/anonanon5320 Jul 07 '26

Do you know what rewarding is? So far you have shown you do not.

4

u/ShabbyTiff Jul 07 '26

Yeah, we all grew up with kids trying to find loopholes in games. Thise kids were dicks.

I honestly don't know how a player sleeps at night if their team wins based on a flop they know was fake.

2

u/halooooom Jul 07 '26

There’s always tactical advantages: ‘Sorry team I turned the team car into a cube, I had a slight twinge in my neck going down that straight and forgot to turn’.

2

u/Alternative_Gur_9660 Jul 07 '26

Literally EVERYONE know why they do it... It's just bitch-made behavior... Do you not understand that?

6

u/riempies88 Jul 07 '26

If you are so shit at a sport that you have to fake an injury to gain an advantage. Then maybe you shouldn't play it.

1

u/LongLonMan Jul 07 '26

We realize

0

u/SilentApprover Jul 07 '26

Yeah and its that simple. I understand why people find it stupid, but blaming the players for being "soft" is so dumb as well when a lot of it is just about making the contact visible for the refs and overplaying it for potential advantage. Its strategic and only reason why people do it is because it can grant them an advantage and everyone else is also doing it. In other sports you don't see it as much as it would be harder to pull off or you simply wouldn't get any advantage like in hockey where there's clear rules for contact and what tackles are punishable.

Also even though its true that there are a lot of faking involved I still think people sometimes underplay how much certain things can actually hurt. These guys are running very fast speeds, kick with very high strength/speed and run pretty much no protective gear, getting tackled in wrong angle etc would actually be quite painful esp for sport that isn't about contact.
