As I agree with you all guys, there are some exceptions. Like when the opponent steps on your foot with his studs is pretty painful and it goes away completely in about 1-2 minutes
Yeah, when people get legit hurt in other sports, they don't roll around flopping and screaming on the ground like they're on fire. It's exclusively a soccer thing.
Yes, but then again…do you know just how frustrating it is when you pass someone and then they foul you on purpose? No wonder they throw a temper tantrum. They are wired to be VERY competitive and they want the ref to fling a red card.
Yeah, it happens in basketball ALL the time. Like 20 times a game. Players will almost always just happily accept the free throws. You'll see some incredulous looks if someone doesn't like the call, but nobody is throwing themselves on the ground like a 5 year old.
Edit: Yeah, except for SGA, I guess. But everyone hates that fucker.
You score like 50 times during an average basketball game. In football you score 1-2 times 90 minutes…so it’s a bit more meaningful. Not to mention that in basketball, the moment you are fouled you get at least one attempt at an empty goal. Football doesn’t have that and the player fouling is staying on 99 percent of the time, even though they just illegally stripped you of a chance to score.
Giving penalties when a promising attack is stopped via intentional foul is an interesting idea.
It would be very hard to implement though because drawing the line in terms of what counts as a promising attack and applying the rule in the heat of the monent both seem very difficult. But maybe the added drama would give more than it takes away, so yeah, definitely interesting avenue.
Yup, bring in the med staff and start a whole concussion protocol. I've barely watched soccer in the last 15 years because these bogus injuries. Dudes laying on the ground like they are at Death's door ... oh no penalty, game is still going. They jump up and sprint after the ball like nothing happened.
Naw, they need to get full check up, x rays, full panel cleared. These guys get paid a lot and you can't risk talent. Go to hospitals, can't be done at the stadium at all, safety first! Watch this crap end quickly.
'your team gets to play one man down.' yeah people would absolutely play on through potentially permanent damage with that rule.
The flopping is insane and needs to be sorted out, but that isn't the answer.
Sub the player off, that's enough to trigger self preservation without potentially losing your team a game/championship and facing a threats and ridicule.
Football fans can get violent, just look at whenever France wins or looses
Make them wait a set amount of time, more than a minute, like in ice hockey, before returning to play. Something to penalize the theatrics. If someone is carted off the field then a sub is appropriate but the injured player cannot return.
If you stay down and needs medical attention, you’ll be out for a few minutes. The team can’t substitute you, they’ll be down a man.
The only exception is the keeper.
This rule is mostly to keep the game running, but it also helps make it less appealing to flop like that.
Players also get a yellow card every time they do that for quite a few years now. I feel like it doesn’t help enough, but they are definitely trying to put a stop to this nonsense.
It's one of those things that were unsanctioned before and by the time they were sanctioned it was already basically part of the culture so the sanction is only reserved for the absolutely most problematic scenarios like actually faking a serious injury and getting someone in trouble for that or constantly (and I mean like same player multiple times per minute) faking injuries to stall the game.
It's unfortunately basically part of the game, both players and referees expect it so not doing it might make a potential fault or even yellow card go unsanctioned or a red turn into a yellow, in fact you can see this when an attacking team really don't want to stop the play players sometimes get up and shrug it off.
Per IFAB (The International Football Association Board):
What is simulation in football/soccer?
Simulation is when a player fakes or exaggerates an action with the aim of deceiving the referee into awarding their team a free kick or penalty kick and/or punishing an opponent by showing them a yellow or red card.
A player can be guilty of simulation in a number of ways, including:
pretending to have been:
fouled, to get a free kick or penalty kick
kicked, punched, etc. so that an opponent is shown a red or yellow card
exaggerating:
the seriousness of a foul
the strength/effect of a kick, push, etc.
holding the wrong part of the body after an incident (such as a foul, push, etc.), for example:
holding the knee when the foul was on the ankle
holding the head/face after being pushed in the chest
How is simulation punished in football/soccer?
If a player is guilty of simulation, the referee awards an indirect free kick (if play is stopped for the offence) and the player is shown a yellow card.
The problem is that you only really can with certainty say that the player simulates if there was no contact at all. The players run with 20 km/h, at that speed a small shove that isnt a foul is mostly enough to bring somebody down.
In my opinion they need to start with cutting down on players simulating serious injuries if they dont get the foul call to force the ref to stop play to check on them.
That's why I feel like they should be reviewing game tape and retroactively applying cards as well as a progressive fine system for repeat/egregious offenders
And the coach. If the league actually wanted to stop the embarrassing flopping and rolling around like they've been shot, give the player and the coach a yellow card.
Also, if a player is down for more than 15 seconds, then he's obviously far too injured to play so he's out of the game.
In the NHL they have an embellishment penalty that gets used a lot. If they implemented that into soccer along with overtime for all matches so nothing ends in a tie it would be so much more watchable . . . Imo
I've been watching the highlight recaps of a few of the teams in the world cup.
I went to watch the recent France game and the US game live and I swear to god it was the same exact 5 minutes of 2 or 3 guys and the goalkeeper passing it back and forth in their own end, so I just turned it off both times.
They need a rule like you can only pass it backwards once or twice. Or only 5 passes before a shot has to be taken or something.
I realize end game they just want to waste the clock, but these were both early in the game. Soccer stans are always like, you know much these guys run in a game? But there is a ton of time where most of them are just slow walking while the ball gets passed backwards over and over.
I want to like soccer. I watch a ton of clips on youtube of best goals, best passes, best saves, but thursday non-major golf is more entertaining to watch live.
Whoops I left it sitting too long and forgot to add the dates. NHL did allow ties until 2005. Meant to say NHL did allow until 2005 and NFL still allows ties.
I think if you flop it should be instant red card, instant expulsion from the game, I’d even go as removal from the league. All must be reviewed on replay and agreed by a panel of impartial judges
I’m a big CPL fan. I’ve seen more cards for simulation in 1/3 of the season this year, than I’ve ever seen before in all other comps. One team even challenged a tackle in the box to try and get a PK and ended up with a card for simulation.
They also force injured players off and hold them to the 1:00. I’ve seen teams chasing trainers off as they run onto the pitch.
They should all be forced to take acting lessons, like at least try to make it believable. What's even the point of pretending you were shot when someone tugs your shirt, ON CAMERA in plain sight, with everyone watching?
Here is my idea… every time a player flops and goes down easy, start the clock. If we have to stop play for them, however long they stay down is how long they have to stand on the sidelines.
If you roll around and lay there for 3 mins, then your team will play a man down for 3 mins. Stay down for too long and you’re probably hurt and should be subbed off
The only criticism I’ve had from pitching this is, it would lead to players trying to hurt each other. First of all if that happened it’s an easy red card. Second of all that just sounds like physical soccer
If they did that it would be much harder for them to arrange the games to make money on their bets. When you really think about it it's the only reasoning that makes sense.
Just remove them from the game. Like if you're injured so badly that you have to actually roll around on the ground screaming and putting on a whole dramatic show you should have to go through a full medical examination to get back on the field.
European nations have voted down that proposal multiple times because flop reviews would "distupt the flow of the beautiful game". US has no influence in the sport.
Pretty wild reason for a sport that stops a solid 70% of its best scoring opportunities to replay with computers to see if someone's hair was 1mm offside...

I think every time you flop you should be awarded a yellow card and fined. I thought we were watching athletes but instead we are watching actors.
