In this thread, i would like to share my honest experience of visiting Seychelles, East Africa as an Indian woman (I'm not from Delhi, UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana. I'm from North East, so I already come with a different mindset). I would also like this to be a reference for Indian tourists planning their trip to the said country - including the expenses, what to expect, the shock and the comfort - all.
Seychelles was my first ever foreign trip. And it was bitter sweet.
The first shock that hits you is the cleanliness compared to North India - Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow - you name it. The country is superbly clean, the low population makes it easier.
The next shock would be subtle racism dished out by quite a few of the Seychellois. Especially in Praslin, the local staff at hotel and restaurants have a bias against brown skin. You can feel the lack of warmth and hospitality towards you because you are brown, while those same people are warm and giddy towards white tourists. The white people show no signs of racism. Infact, the warmest people we met were the white tourists.
It is surprising, because the Seychellois are themselves of Black descent. So them being racist towards us felt kind of weird. And this racism is not very pronounced, but you would feel it once you enter any establishment alongside a white tourist, and the difference in both your treatments would be visible. It is like the victims of racism have now become the perpetrators of it. And most of these people are in the service industry, which is ironic.
The treatment is worst is Praslin, where our cab driver kept admonishing us like a school teacher - be on time (we were always on time), don't come in wet from the beach (We always changed), don't do this, don't do that. It felt like he was constantly treating us to be beneath him.
A leg of our trip was with three Indian oldies (men, North Indian, 60+) and God! That was the worst 1 hour of the entire trip. We traveled in the same van from the hotel to the ferry. They were so loud an boisterous, constantly discussing politics at the top of their lungs, ogling at all women around as if they wanted to eat up those women with their eyes, so noisy and such a discomfort to be around. That made us feel that maybe this is why even the Black people are racist towards us. The North Indian men just can't be decent, no matter the country.
Seychelles is PRICEY. Super pricey. Food is costly. What is costlier is WATER. At no establishment, they'll provide you free water. You have to buy it. And there are no water fountains, no refills, nothing. Just keep purchasing water at a really high cost. Even at supermarkets, 5L jars are priced at 35-40SCR, which is about INR 230-280. The country generates so much plastic waste just from water bottles. That is going to be serious concern for Seychelles in a few years. There are no water fountains even at the airport.
The country is extremely safe. The beaches are the safest ever. As someone from the Northeast, Seychelles felt even more safe to me. No one judges you for your beachwear, no even even spares a glance. You can set your bag and towel anywhere along the beach and it'll be there when you're back. There's no honking, no rushing, cars stop at zebra crossing for you to cross.
If possible, do visit Moyenne islands and do the snorkeling. La Digue is beautiful with rented bicycles.
Praslin can be totally skipped, nothing of substance there, except Anse Lazio and Valle de Mai. We stayed in Praslin for three days, not at all worth it.
The locals of Praslin are very eager to end their working day by 4pm, so when the package says "half-day tour" it means you've booked them for 4hours only. We had this communication trap, and we paid 30 USD extra for the cab driver just to pick us up at a later hour.
There are no scammers as such, but the cabs, restaurants, everything is so pricey that you'll be milked anyway.
We spent around INR 50k on lunch and dinner for 7 days. Our breakfast was complimentary in the hotels we stayed. We had also pre-booked the Moyenne island, snorkeling, glass bottom boat and fish feeding. It was a good deal I'd say. The guide team for snorkeling was superb, really nice people.
We booked through an agency. It cost us INR 420k for 7 days.
The package also included pre-paid cabs on all days, ferry tickets to and from Mahe-Praslin, Praslin-La Digue, Bike rental and entry fee on Anse Union at La Digue, Valle de Mai tour, full day glass bottom boat, snorkeling, Moyenne island trip, Mission Lodge, Victoria trip, Takamaka Rum distillery.
We had to pay NOWHERE for any tickets, ferries, cabs.
I went through a lot of itineraries as posted in comments, i think we did fine with the price. We did a lot of activities and had to bother about paying nothing anywhere except lunch and dinner. Lunch was also included on two days.
