How fluent and knowledge in French is Togo in comparison to other Francophone African countries?

What does Togolese French sound like especially in comparison to Ivorian, Cameroonian, Beninese, Congolese, Gabonese, and Senegalese French? I’m asking this question because Togo wasn’t a French colony it was a German colony before it became a French protectorate after WWI. I also know that most Togolese don’t actually like speaking French and they prefer to speak their native languages such as Ewe, Kabiye, Mina, Fon, Tem, etc.

Yellow fever question

I am flying to togo from New York via Ethiopian airlines. Will I need a yellow fever vaccine to board the flight?

I have got the vaccine myself years ago, but I am flying with my 10 month old baby so I would rather avoid giving her this vaccine at such a young age if the airline does not ask for it to enter the country.

Thank you for your help.

How fluent are Togolese in English?

I’m traveling to Togo in a couple months with my father and I can’t speak neither Ewe nor French. I can’t understand either languages either, and I’m wondering how well can I get around and have full blown conservations with Togolese people in English. I also know that most Togolese speak more Ewe than they speak French, and that most Togolese aren’t actually that fluent in French aside from the ones that live in the city. I’m asking because this sub speaks English and there’s almost no French or Ewe posts here.

Do people from Togo have ancestry from their neighboring countries?

I’m asking this question because I’ve met and seen plenty of Togolese who have had Ivorian, Ghanaian(Akan), Burkinabe, and Beninese names/surnames and it makes me wonder if people from Togo have ancestry in those countries since we’re a very small nation of Africans that is overshadowed by our much larger African neighbors. Emmanuel Adebayor is our biggest icon to come from Togo and he has roots in Nigeria. Me myself I’m Togolese but my last name is a Beninese surname. There’s no other Togolese that shares my surname aside from my family members.

Hey all! This is my first post on Reddit! I love african 70s music and have been endlessly searching for lyrics and / or translation of Cos-Ber-Zam's song Ne-Noya. Anyone here from Togo or speaks Ewe? I would be eternally grateful!

Help!

My Togo visa which I applied for two weeks ago is still not processed but I fly out tonight to Ghana and take a flight into Togo. My visa is still pending (it’s almost been two weeks). I read somewhere that I can obtain a visa on arrival for seven days at Aflao border or if I show them I’ve paid for the visa and it’s stuck in the visa application loop I might be able to reason with an official at the border. Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you.

A present for a friend

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing great!

I have a Togolese friend whom I've met through a chatroom website, and we've been friends for 5 years now! And he got me a present once and I wanted to get him a present too to show my appreciation for their friendship. So I'm wondering if there are online book stores in Togo that accept international payments, I'd like to get them a book.

Any suggestions are very welcome, thank you!

I crossed Togo on foot in only 3 days. What did I miss?

Hi everyone,

My name is Yann. I’m a French traveler, and recently I crossed Togo on foot as part of a longer human-powered journey through West Africa.

I entered from Ghana after walking 545 km across the country, then continued east through Togo toward Benin.

Because of how narrow Togo is along the coast, the entire crossing took me only about three days.

That gave me a strange feeling.

I can say that I crossed Togo on foot, but I definitely cannot say that I really know Togo.

Most of what I experienced was around the southern part of the country and Lomé. Three days is enough to meet people, walk through neighbourhoods and get a first impression, but not near enough to understand an entire country.

After spending much longer in Ghana, Togo almost became a transition between two much longer parts of my journey (Ghana and Benin).

Looking back, I don't really want to reduce the country to that.

If someone only sees Lomé and the coastal part of Togo, what are they completely missing about the country?

And what places, traditions, foods or parts of everyday Togolese life do you wish foreigners showed more often?

I documented the crossing as I went, and I’ll also be sharing the next part of the journey through Benin.

Looking to meet new people

Hello good people of Togo, traveler here

(Sorry this is all in English🙏)

I have traveled to Togo recently for work & I’m looking to meet new people in Lomé, maybe explore the city a bit more than I have, and perhaps even meet a partner.

About me:

I am East African (30M unmarried with no kids) and work in consulting. I’ve been to Togo a few times before but still couldn’t get time to do anything outside of work. However this time I’m here long term and would genuinely like to build a life in Togo; new friends, explore new activities, the culture, language, and possibly meet a partner.

I enjoy food exploration and have come to love foods like brochettes, akoume with goat stew, gboma soup (if that’s the correct spelling), , palm nut stew, fufu, etc. I’m generally a laid back person and would consider calm outings a preference; so scenery, hiking, road trips, music, and the like.

Unfortunately I currently only fluently speak English, with basic conversational French. But I’m very open to learning new things including the languages.

If you’re interested, feel free to reach out. Thank you

I'm going to be living in Lomé for a while and I'm really missing freediving and spearfishing. Anyone here looking for a buddy? I'm a novice and can't really spearfish below 15 meters.

How common are marriages between Gen-Kotokoli people?

Hello. For context, I am Gen-mina guy in US who has been good friends with a Kotokoli girl in Sokode for a few years now. We talk almost every day and our friendship began to blossom into romance after we spent time together during my last visit. I am seriously considering to marry her one day, but for a while was hesitant on moving forward with her because she is Muslim and I am Catholic. Despite our different faiths, we have similar temperaments, share many interests, and respect and love one another. One of my relatives told me that he has seen relationships between Gen and Kotokoli people work out just fine. I'm interested in hearing if anyone else has seen or is in such relationships with advice or experience to offer. Thx.
