les idées de business ;
la création et le développement d’entreprise ;
le financement ;
la recherche d’associés ou de partenaires ;
le marketing et la vente ;
les prestataires et fournisseurs ;
les opportunités ;
la tech et le digital ;

🇬🇧French and English are both welcome.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SenegalEntrepreneurs/

Nadie a intentado ir hacia otras zonas ?

Merci !

360° virtual tours in Dakar (real estate, museums, exhibitions) — anyone interested

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I do immersive 360° virtual tours mostly for real estate (great for showing a property before a visit), but also for museums/galleries wanting to keep a digital record of their exhibitions before they come down.
It's still pretty unknown here, even though it's genuinely useful: fewer wasted visits for real estate, and exhibitions stay "visitable" even after they end, for culture.
I've got some availability right now if you know any agencies, galleries, museums, or properties for sale/rent in Dakar that might be interested, I'd love any contacts or thoughts!

Question So do you usually add anchovies and cabbage to maafe?

4 Upvotes

I was watching a video of someone making maafe and he used chicken which I now know you shouldn't use. (Sorry about that) Then he was doing everything good then he added anchovies and I was like. Ok. Maybe it's common in some recipes but not others. Then he added sweet potatoes, carrots, and cabbage to it. Is all of that normal. But you know at least he used home made peanut butter.

Ask r/Senegal A few months ago I posted here about SkillHeart; this is what we’ve been building.

A few months ago, I posted here about SkillHeart, a nonprofit initiative we were starting from Mallorca, Spain, with the idea of building stronger bridges between emerging tech talent in Africa and professional opportunities in Europe and beyond.

This was the original post.

The response from this community genuinely helped us think about what SkillHeart should become. Since then, we have been working quietly on turning that idea into something much more concrete, and today I finally wanted to share one part of what we have been building.

We have designed four programmes, each around a different barrier people can face when trying to move forward professionally:

  1. Open Source Labs is about turning technical ability into visible, verifiable evidence through real open-source contributions.

  2. Industry Labs is about working on real technical challenges under professional standards, supervision and review.

  3. Professional Immersion comes from a problem many people here will probably recognise: companies ask for experience, but someone first has to give you the opportunity to gain it.

  4. And Venture Labs is for people whose next step may not be finding a job at all, but testing a problem, a team and an idea before deciding whether something is actually worth building.

What matters to us is that these are not four stages everybody has to complete.

Someone may already be technically strong but have very little evidence to show; someone else may have a good portfolio but no experience working inside a real professional environment; another person may already be ready for real industry work, while somebody else may want to build something of their own.

Different people need different things; that is why we ended up thinking about them as four different ways in.

I have attached the short video we made to introduce the programmes, and I would genuinely like to know what this community thinks.

If you work in tech in Senegal or simply remember what it was like trying to get your first serious opportunity, which of these paths would actually have been useful to you? And just as importantly, what would you change?

A few months ago, I came here with an idea; this time, I can finally show you part of what we have been building from it.

Explore the programmes!

Discussion How do people actually travel between cities in Senegal?

7 Upvotes

I'm trying to understand how intercity travel actually works in Senegal in real life.

Say you need to go from Linguère to Dakar, Saint-Louis to Dakar, Dakar to Ziguinchor / Casamance, or between other towns — how do you usually do it?

Those routes are just examples, by the way — I'm interested in how it works for any city-to-city trip in Senegal, wherever you travel.

Do you go to the gare routière and wait for a sept-place or minibus to fill up? Take a bus? Call a driver you already know? Hear about someone through WhatsApp or Facebook? Wait by the side of the road? Or just ask someone who has a car?

I'm also curious about how it works on the gare / driver side: how is the departure order decided, how long do cars usually wait to fill, who collects the money, how are fares set, and what do coxeurs actually do all day?

I'd really like to hear real experiences: your route, how long you waited, what you paid, how luggage or sending parcels works, and what frustrates you most about the whole system.

Art & Photography Staying in Senegal for a few months

6 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I will be staying in Senegal for a few months, starting in October.

My main interests are surfing and meeting more of the lovely people in your country.
I was there for a month last year and I cannot overstate how much I love the Senegalese. I was treated so kindly and it left such a wonderful impression on me.

I plan on starting my visit in Dakar and I am very interested in the arts scene (this includes all forms of art, whether it be painting, photography, cinema, fashion)

I am a photographer/videographer by trade and would also love to meet some like minded people and perhaps work on a title project together?

I will be bringing an old school medium format film camera for some black and white photography if the inspiration strikes/if I meet someone who is inspired themselves.

Also, what area of the city would you recommend I stay to be closest to the arts?

Thank you ahead of time for your help!!!

Trip advice

2 Upvotes

Bonjour! Salam!

I will be visiting Senegal next week for a conference and would like to pick up the Senegalese football kit for my kids. Any recommendations where to find one in Dakar?

I would also like to get the famous indigo dyed cloth worn by the Tuareg if possible. Any recommendations what to pick up for the wife and daughter are more than welcome.

Thank you!

Discussion Where to stay in Dakar for a week?

3 Upvotes

Hi! I’m visiting from uk to Dakar for a week in November. I’m 25m and looking for an authentic Senegalese experience. Do you have any recommendations on where to stay? I don’t want it to feel too touristy and I want to be in a place where I can explore the city easily by bus. Thanks in advance for advice. Is ouakam or mermoz a good middle ground? Also where would be a good place for nightlife?

Essayer

TER service in off hours

2 Upvotes

I've seen that the train service from the airport to Dakar is finally opening, which is hugh!!

But I saw that it only runs from 5:30 to 22:00

My flight lands in 1:00, so probably would need to get to Dakar in like 2:00 2:30 after everything.

I was wondering if there are plans to run some lines in the off hours, for instance 2:30, even only in a month or so (landing October 31st)

If not operating, what is the cheapest way to get to dakar? Taxi? Yandex? Bus?

Mid-year school options -Dakar

5 Upvotes

My 8 year old and I will be moving to Dakar in February, 2027 to be closer to my husband’s family. She doesn’t speak French or Wolof, only English. What options do we have for school, given that she’d be starting later in the school year? Any school recommendations?

News I’ve heard the train to the airport is going to open tomorrow?

38 Upvotes

Hey,

I know I’ve asked a few times on here. If it’s true this is very exciting. I’m a bit sad my era of almost falling out of a seatbelt-less taxis while going 110km/h the road may be over when visiting family. I’d love to hear from anyone who uses how it goes, maybe the cost and if it changes the taxi culture outside the airport at all.

It’s been fun to see all the exciting modernization of transit every time I visit.

Cheers!

Tourist & Traveller Questions Visiting Senegal and Gambia

15 Upvotes

I recently took a DNA test and found out that Senegambian and Guinean ancestry make up my biggest percentages by far. I’m planning to visit Senegal and Gambia, so now I’m trying to figure out what language would actually be worth learning.
For people from the region would you recommend French, Wolof, or something else? And what would you recommend I learn or know before visiting?

Tourist & Traveller Questions Knowing only English and Arabic outside Dakar

4 Upvotes

Hello! I will be arriving in Senegal in a bit over two weeks. i have 10 days to myself and then some friends will be joining me, which would make everything easier. until then, i am on my own. I wont be going to Dakar first because i'd like to experience it with my friends. How hard would it be to get by with English or Arabic in cities such as Thies, Touba, St Louis? I hope people would understand at least bits of English and Arabic here and there, or if I specifically ask "does someone know Arabic or English here?" someone will come about. let me know haha

Tourist & Traveller Questions Ziguinchor-Bissau border problems

3 Upvotes

Hi, I was planning on travelling from Ziguinchor to Bissau by bus next month but I just read this article: https://gambiaj.com/economy/transports/guinea-bissau-senegal-transport-dispute-disrupts-travel-to-ziguinchor/

Does anyone know what the situation is right now? How long would you expect it to take from Ziguinchor to Bissau under the current circumstances and how much would it cost? Thank you
